PLEASE be advised that low performance on the math portion of the STAAR may result in Mega Math placement
which may eliminate an elective choice.
6th graders will take the required courses of English, Reading, Math, History, Science, and PE/Wellness. Mega Math is for
those students who showed weakness on the math portion of the STAAR or who struggle with the faster presentation of concepts. It will meet for two periods to provide more support and enrichment. Therefore, students taking Mega Math will not have
an elective choice. Some students may also be placed in Read 180 based on administrative review of academic performance.
All 6th grade students are required to take PE/Wellness.
Elective Courses for 6th Grade
*Beginning Band 6 will provide students the exciting experience of learning to play a woodwind, brass or percussion instrument. No previous experience is needed. The 6th Grade Cowboy Band participates in recitals and competitions, both off and
on campus. Instrument selection will take place this Spring. Each student will have the opportunity to try every instrument at
this time. If you have any questions, please contact the band director at 940-369-4722. Check the band website at
www.dentonisd.org/rcmsband for instrument selection nights and information about beginning band. **
*Choir 6 students will be introduced to a wide variety of music styles. Beginning vocal techniques and reading music will be
emphasized. Choral students will be given the opportunity to become confident musicians through required participation in various extracurricular events throughout the year. **
*Orchestra 6 is open to students who participated in fifth grade orchestra or have been taking private lessons for at least one
year on the orchestra instrument they will be playing in the orchestra (violin, viola, cello or bass). Any students switching to the
bass or a new instrument should sign up for Beginning Orchestra. In orchestra, students will have the opportunity to participate
in concerts, competitions, recitals, and social activities. Students will have 4 required evening performances and 4 required after
school rehearsals throughout the year. **
*Beginning Orchestra is for any student who would like to learn an orchestra instrument they have no prior experience on.
Students can learn to play the violin, viola, cello or bass. Orchestra students will have the opportunity to participate in performances, contests and social activities. If you are signing up for beginning orchestra, contact the Orchestra Director, Angela
Harvey, at 940-369-4723 or [email protected] for information on getting an instrument and the required supplies for next
year. Students will have 4 required evening performances and 4 required after school rehearsals throughout the year.**
Art 6 This semester class will introduce the Elements of Art to students, then put them to use as we look at the great big world
of art. Students will paint, draw, print, and sculpt their way through the art of world cultures such as African, Middle Eastern,
European, Asian, the Americas, and Oceania. Must also take a CTE/World Language elective.
Theatre Arts 6: This semester class is a basic introduction to all areas of theatre including creative dramatics, movement,
voice, pantomime, improvisation, playwriting, and performance. Must also take a CTE/World Language elective.
Career & Technical Education (CTE)/World Language Electives:
CTE Electives are paired with Art or Theatre Arts and are one semester. Students may choose one of the following:
Wheel Option #1 Keyboarding with Career Investigations
Keyboarding (9 weeks) Students will learn introductory keyboarding skills, word processing, speadsheets, presentation,
and computer literacy skills by using some components of Microsoft Office, the Internet, and using a variety of multimedia. Students will apply skills learned and be creative.
Careers Investigations (9 weeks) allows exploration of careers using a variety of hands-on projects to investigate areas of
personal interest.
Wheel Option #2 Technology Education with Spanish
Technology Education (9 weeks) - Students will be introduced to Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math (STEM) in
an interactive and hands-on environment. Students will use computer-aided design (CAD) software, research and model
real-world environmental problems, and work hands-on programming and building robots.
Spanish (9 weeks) This class emphasizes the advantage of knowing a second language and culture. Students will learn
basic conversation and vocabulary through games, songs, and projects. Various aspects of Hispanic cultures are learned
throughout the course.
*Waivers are available to pay expenses of uniforms and instruments for students who qualify.
**Students must maintain grade eligibility in order to participate in extracurricular or UIL activities.
