Compartment Review Presentation Crystal Falls Forest Management Unit Compartment 195 Entry Year 2016 Acreage: 588 County Iron Management Area: Brule-Iron River Tracts Revision Date: 07/24/2014 Stand Examiner: Linda Lindberg Legal Description: T42N,R34W S 18; T42N,R35W S 9,12;T42N,R36W S 8,11;T43N,R34W S 7,35; T43N,R35W S 13;T43N,R36W S 1,24 Identified Planning Goals: The planning goals for a lot of these parcels is to trade for something in the Crystal Falls state forest boundary or to sell them because they are so far from the majority of state land in the Crystal Falls Area. While this is happening, we still are looking to manage the hardwood and try to maintain aspen age class diversity. There is a lot of undivided interest in these parcels also and this is just another thing to deal with. Soil and topography: The soils are Iron Ssurgo soils and the topography is varied but more flat and slightly rolling. Ownership Patterns, Development, and Land Use in and Around the Compartment: There is vast ownership differences here because of the large area that these parcels are scattered in. Some pieces are adjoined with Forest Service land, some are undivided interest, some are along rail or snowmobile trails. Some are mixed with private land. Some offer lake frontage and a boat landing. Unique Natural Features: No Unique Natural Features known. Archeological, Historical, and Cultural Features: No Archeological, Historical, or Cultural Features known. Special Management Designations or Considerations: Watershed and Fisheries Considerations: Snipe Lake access site, a primitive access through undivided interest to Sunset Lake. A primitive southern access to Brule Lake and a somewhat primitive access to Bass Lake near Hagerman. Wildlife Habitat Considerations: This compartment is a combination of parcels in west Iron County. Many of these are waterfront parcels and provide valuable wildlife habitat and public access. Special care should be taken to protect and enhance their diversity. Mineral Resource and Development Concerns and/or Restrictions Surface sediments consist of coarse-textured till and minor glacial outwash sand and gravel and postglacial alluvium. There is insufficient data to determine the glacial drift thickness. The Precambrian Quinnesec Formation, Badwater Greenstone and Randville Dolomite subcrop below the glacial drift. The Randville could be used for dimension stone. Abandoned iron mines of Iron River are located four miles to the north. Part of this area has been previously leased for metallic exploration and there may be potential. Gravel pits are located nearby and there should be potential. There is no economic oil and gas production in the UP. Vehicle Access: As these parcels are located around west Iron county, most are accessible with a vehicle. Some are accessible by snowmobile trail Survey Needs: If management is done, some survey work has been done and some will need to be because of the scattered nature of the parcels. Recreational Facilities and Opportunities: Snowmobile trails are part of some of these parcels, and Snipe lake has a boat landing. There is an undivided interest 08/21/2014 1:11:23 PM - Page 1 of 2 KENNEDYK5 parcel that accesses Sunset Lake on the west side. There is also an undivided interest parcel that access the south side of Brule Lake. There is also access through the woods to Bass Lake in west Iron County Fire Protection: As mentioned above, there is access to these parcels for fire protection. Additional Compartment Information: The following reports from the Inventory are attached: Total Acres by Cover Type and Age Class Cover Type by Harvest Method Proposed Treatments – No Limiting Factors Proposed Treatments – With Limiting Factors Stand Details (Forested and Nonforested) Dedicated and Proposed Special Conservation Areas Site Condition Details The following information is displayed, where pertinent, on the attached compartment maps: Base feature information, stand boundaries, cover types, and numbers Proposed treatments Site condition boundaries Details on the road access system 08/21/2014 1:11:23 PM - Unit Compartment: 195 Year of Entry: 2016 Report 6 – PROPOSED SPECIAL CONSERVATION AREA* (SCA) DETAILS * This is a partial list of SCAs for this compartment. Not included are those areas identified under other Department initiatives (Natural Rivers, Deer Wintering Areas, etc.). Those will be identified in separate, future map and report products. SCA Name SCA Category Detail Type Recommendation Acres Comments 08/21/2014 1:10:50 PM - Page 1 of 1 KENNEDYK5 Crystal Falls Mgt. Unit Compartment: 195 Year of Entry 2016 Report 7 – EXISTING SPECIAL CONSERVATION AREA DETAILS * This is a list of SCA's for this compartment along with a 1/4 mile buffer surrounding the compartment. Refer to the Special Conservation Area Map for locations of the below listed Conservation Areas. Conservation Area Type Description ERA = Ecological Reference Area HCVA = High Conservation Value Area SCA = Special Conservation Area SCA Archaeological Site SCA Cold Water Lake A coldwater lake has temperature and dissolved oxygen conditions that allow naturally-reproduced or stocked trout populations and those of other coldwater fish species to persist from year to year. Suitable conditions for coldwater fishes may occur in Michigan lakes if they are relatively deep, have substantial groundwater inflows, or are located in colder (northern) areas of the state. Such lakes are established by Director's action and designated as trout resources by Fisheries Order 200. SCA Cold Water Stream A coldwater stream has temperature and dissolved oxygen conditions that allow naturally-reproduced or stocked trout populations and those of other coldwater fish species (e.g., slimy sculpin) to persist from year to year. Coldwater streams in Michigan typically provide these conditions due to substantial contributions of groundwater to their stream flows. Such streams are established by Director's action and designated as trout resources by Fisheries Order 210. SCA Habitat Area An area that provide some specific need for the life cycle of wildlife species, including State Wildlife Areas and Waterfowl Production Areas, deer wintering complexes in lowland conifer communities, grassland openings and savannas. Habitat areas are distinct from critical habitat designated for recovery of endangered or threatened species (such as Kirtland's warbler or piping plover areas) in that they are more general in nature, are not primarily associated with threatened or endangered species, and are not covered by species recovery plans that are developed in cooperation with Federal agencies. SCA Riparian Area A transitional area between aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems in which the terrestrial ecosystem influences the aquatic ecosystem and vice-versa. Because of the unique conditions adjacent to lakes, streams and open water wetlands, riparian areas harbor a high diversity of plants and wildlife. Riparian communities are ecologically and socially significant in their effects on water quality and quantity, as well as aesthetics, habitat, bank stability, timber production, and their contribution to overall biodiversity. 08/21/2014 1:10:49 PM - Page 1 of 1 An aquatic or terrestrial area of the State that contains physical remains of human occupation. These are sites of cultural and historical significance that may occur upon terrestrial areas and Great Lakes bottomlands. They include thousands of Native American settlements and burial sites, as well as French and British outposts, nineteenth century logging camps, mines and homesteads. Beneath the waters of the Great Lakes, there are shipwrecks and other remains documenting the maritime trade. Such sites may be identified by Natural heritage data from the State Historic Preservation Office. Proposed treatments in this compartment will be implemented in such a manner as to maintain the integrity of these sites. Due to the sensitive nature of this information, no further detail about location is available. KENNEDYK5 S t a n d Report 8 – Forested Stands Crystal Falls Mgt.
