Hurricane Katrina
AND A DECLINING ECONOMY
AS HE LEFT OFFICE…
On September 11, 2001, Islamic Fundamentalist
terrorist hijacked four U.S. airliners. Two
were flown into the World Trade Center in New
York City, one was flown into the Pentagon in
Washington D.C., and one was crashed in
Pennsylvania when passengers fought back.
3,000 people were killed, making this the worst
attack in U.S. history. Osama Bin Laden and his
organization, al-Qaeda took credit for the
attacks. After the attacks, Bin Laden was
hidden by the Taliban.
Bush vowed to launch a global “War on Terror”.
He also took steps to curb terrorism at home.
A new federal agency the Transportation
Security Agency (TSA) took over security at
airports. All passengers and luggage were
subject to thorough screening.
He created a new Cabinet post, the Department
of Homeland Security, and he sponsored the
USA PATRIOT Act of 2001 which greatly
expanded the government’s law enforcement
powers. Suspected terrorists capture in
Afghanistan were sent to Guantanamo Bay in
Cuba.
When Sadam Hussein refused
to allow U.N. inspectors to
search Iraq for WMD’s, Bush
issued a 48 hour deadline for
Hussein to leave Iraq. When
Hussein refused to leave,
coalition forces took military
action.
BUSH’S SECOND TERM WITNESS THE ARRIVAL OF
HURRICANE KATRINA. THIS HURRICANE LED TO THE
EVACUATION AND FLOODING OF ALMOST 80% OF NEW
ORLEANS AND OTHER PARTS OF THE GULF COAST.
KATRINA BROUGHT THE HIGHEST STORM SURGE AND
WAVES EVER RECORDED TO HIT NORTH AMERICA. ITS
SURGE AND WAVES GREATLY EXCEEDED THE
ENGINEERING DESIGN OF THE NEW ORLEANS LEVEES.
IT WAS THE COSTLIEST HURRICANE ON RECORD. MORE
THAN 1,800 PEOPLE LOST THEIR LIVES MAKING IT ONE
OF THE DEADLIEST NATURAL DISASTERS IN AMERIAN
HISTORY. ALMOST 20,000 PEOPLE WERE TRAPPED IN
