E N I F E D RE MICROSOFT SQL SERVER DATABASES WITH XTREMIO XtremIO Overview Production | Reports | Analytics Test | Development | Maintenance XtremIO all-flash-arrays (AFAs) have redefined everything you know about SQL Server database infrastructures. Through a ground-breaking, fresh approach to storage design, XtremIO is uniquely engineered for SQL Server database requirements utilizing a powerful and vastly simplified scale-out performance architecture, with in-memory always-on compression, deduplication and space efficient copy services enabling application acceleration, consolidation and agility. Single Platform For SQL Database Landscape Consistent Performance at Scale Consolidate Database Silos XtremIO all-flash means sustained sub-millisecond response times at any scale. XtremIO allows consolidataion of different silos and workloads onto an XtremIO cluster. Real Time Analytics On-demand Test/ Dev Infrastructure XtremIO delivers near realtime analytics and on-demand data marts, where copies can be instantly created and deleted with no capacity or performance impact on the production database instance. Consolidate and accelerate your business innovation cycles by deploying database copies for as many developers as you need - unrestricted To learn more about Visit Emc.com/flash >> EMC XtremIO and Visit Emc.com/platform/microsoft.htm >> Microsoft Solutions: Visit Emc.com/everythingmicrosoft >> 5 200,000 180,000 160,000 Latency (ms) 140,000 IOPS 120,000 100,000 80,000 Simplify Database Administration For All DBAs 60,000 40,000 0 0 Predictable Performance 0 Continuous Operations No Tuning or Bottlenecks 5000 Failure & Maintenance Proof 200,000 200,000 Active-Active N+1 vs. Active-Passive Redundancy 5 IOPS IOPS Latency (ms) 20,000 99.999% 0 0 Availability LATENCY 0 20,000 0 5000 XDPA Non Disruptive In-Memory RAID 0 Upgrades 5000 Complete Efficiency Incredible Simplicity More Databases Without Penalty Continuous Balanced Block Distribution Increases Flash Longevity More Useable Capacity Zero Planning Required Any Database No Setting RAID Any # of LUNs No Sizing & Striping Any File System No Caching & Tiering In-Memory Snapshots Provisioning Easy As 1-2-3 1 2 3 3X Dedupe 6X Compression Test & Dev Reports Analytics CREATE VOLUMES CREATE INITIATOR GROUPS To learn more about Visit Emc.com/flash >> EMC XtremIO and Visit Emc.com/platform/microsoft.htm >> Microsoft Solutions: Visit Emc.com/everythingmicrosoft >> MAP VOLUMES Role Of The DBA In The Cloud TOP CHALLENGES OF A SQL DBA 1 Reduce the cost of my SQL Server database copies 2 Improve the speed of SQL Server Reporting 3 Unable to backup & recover data within agreed service levels 4 Innovate faster; building systems to significantly contribute to revenue generation or cost reduction Redefine DBA Productivity Today’s SQL DBA spends the majority of their time maintaining existing database environments. As databases scale finding sequential write space is increasingly difficult placing heavy overhead on the storage array creating wide swings in levels of IOPS and latency. XtremIO relies upon the controller in the SSD itself to handle the location and deletion of new writes. This frees XtremIO from log structuring and system level data collection. The results of EMC performance testing have shown XtremIO drives ~80% more database I/O with anywhere from 3X to 30X better latency. Relative Useable Capacity When designing XtremIO specific architectural decisions were made to ensure data services are performed in-line, all the time and the full processing power of the platform is utilized, including integration with the SSD vendors themselves. The result is the highest performing, most capacity & cost-efficient AFA platform available today with the greatest longevity. Single X-Brick Other All-Flash Arrays Timeline Highest Useable Capacity For Databases RAID Spares Metadata ~72% Impact When Dedupe Randomly Turns Off??? AFA Competitors Other AFA vendors use parity RAID models which require extra of capacity be allocated for RAID groups. XtremIO Data Protection XDP is the industry’s first flash-native data protection in metadata consuming much less capacity. Due to the overhead from data collection on other AFAs described earlier they will also require more space for data collection on the storage controller CPU. The biggest difference however is that other AFA vendors may randomly turn off dedupe during read-intensive workloads. XtremIO delivers ~30% more useable capacity and always-on in-line dedupe. With every AFA, SSDs have a certain amount of times they can be reprogrammed with fresh data. Hence the best AFAs write as little data as possible to SSDs, and when it does, writes should be evenly balanced to extend useful life. Unlike XtremIO, other AFAs conduct post-process dedupe, system collection, data integrity checking, RAID calculations on SSDs. This places extreme overhead on SSDs and decreases their longevity by 10-20X compared to XtremIO AFAs.
