Freedom of Information Request Reference No: 201607236
Your request was received on 18/07/16 and I am dealing with it under the terms of the Freedom of
Information act 2000 (the Act). Your request was as follows:
Please may I have a copy of the latest occupational mesothelioma death statistics in the Education sector for
2014.
The numbers of mesothelioma deaths for males and females, and ideally the PMRs if they have been calculated,
in the following occupational categories:
2311 ‐ Higher education teaching professionals
2312 ‐ Further education teaching professionals
2313 ‐ Education officers, school inspectors
2314 ‐ Secondary education teaching professionals
2315 ‐ Primary & nursery education teaching professionals
2316 ‐ Special needs education teaching professionals
2317 ‐ Senior professionals of educational establishments
2319 ‐ Teaching and other educational professionals n.e.c.
6121 ‐ Nursery nurses and assistants
6122 ‐ Childminders & related occupations
6123 ‐ Playworkers
6125 – Teaching assistants
6126 ‐ Educational support assistants
9244 ‐ School mid‐day and crossing patrol occupations
4213 ‐ School secretaries
Also please could I have the data on:
2211 - Medical practitioners
2231 – Nurses
Further is it possible to break these figures between Wales, England and Scotland.

DISCLOSURE INFORMATION
The information HSE holds in response to your request is disclosed in Tables 1 to 3 below.
Table 1 shows male mesothelioma mortality at ages 16-74 for the year 2014 for selected occupations
based on the Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) 2000 and 2010. The statistics are restricted
to this age range since occupation is not reliably recorded on deaths at ages 75 years or above. We
do not calculate Proportional Mortality Ratios (PMRs) by occupation for individual years since the
results would be very imprecise due to the small numbers of cases in many occupational groups. I
have therefore produced PMRs for the period 2003-2014 to allow comparison with previously released
figures. These are also given in the table along with the associated 95% confidence intervals.
Table 2 shows the equivalent statistics for females.
The terms of our agreement with the Office for National Statistics and National Records for Scotland
which allow HSE access to the mesothelioma data do not permit the release information for individual
years broken down by both occupation and country. I have therefore supplied the breakdown of data
by country for the period 2003-2014 in Table 3.
Further information
The PMRs were calculated based on the methods used in previously published analyses and as
described in our most recent publication, available at
www.hse.gov.uk/statistics/causdis/mesothelioma/mortality-by-occupation-2002-2010.pdf. Please see
page 3 of this document for a discussion of how PMRs should be interpreted.
It is particularly important to note that the coding of occupation is likely to be more reliable at the 3 digit
(minor group) level than the 4 digit (unit group) level since the recorded information about the job title
on death certificates does not always give sufficient information to accurately assign a 4 digit code.
This is a particularly relevant issue for 4-digit codes within minor group 231, “Teaching professionals”,
and we have therefore also provided PMRs for this 3-digit group which will be more reliable. For many
such deaths the job title is recorded only as “teacher” and in most cases these are recorded as a
primary/nursery teacher (code 2315) if the deceased was female but a secondary teacher (code 2314)
if the deceased was male. This assignment is based on an assumption that it is more likely for women
to be primary/nursery teachers and for men to be secondary teachers. As a consequence, for females,
the number of observed and expected deaths among primary/nursery teachers is likely to be
overstated and deaths among secondary teachers is likely to be understated. The opposite effect will
apply for males.
These statistics are derived from the Mesothelioma Register which is based on death certificates
supplied by the Office for National statistics (ONS) and the National Records for Scotland (NRS).
Data for all causes of death for the earlier period 2002-2010 (obtained by HSE from ONS in order to
carry out the last published analysis for the period 2002-2010) have been used in calculating the
PMRs since data for 2011 to 2014 have not yet been obtained from ONS. This is unlikely to have a
major impact on the results.
Note also that mesothelioma deaths occurring from 2011 in England and Wales and deaths occurring
from 2012 in Scotland were coded to the Standard Occupational Classification 2010 (SOC2010). A
small number of deaths with the last occupation recorded under the new occupational groupings within
SOC2010 have been reassigned to the most relevant SOC2000 code as shown in Table 4.
