"St Peter's {(c. Church, Hatton
Garden, London was tlie scene of an
outrage on January lOth. Father Adolphos Bakanowski was celeb~ting
Mass at 10.IOam, when 30 year old
asphaJter Ale"imder Schossa walked
in with his hat· on, stood at a pillar
near the sanctuary and said to the
congregation "everybody leave".
Then' he. fired a pistol at father
Bakinoswki who was at that moment
elevating the host. The altar boy fled
to ihe'saciisty and locked its door
behiild, 'him; . so that Fatlier
'Bakanowski cOUld not enter. Schossa
fired several more shots at the priest
who ran to tile centre of the church
made his escape tllfough

followed by
women worshippers.
Schossa then
tore down· the
candlesticks
from tile altar
arid trampled
on the chalice.

pulled out the

about 300 consecrated wafers around
then set fire to the altar cloths, At this
point Fatller Henry Arkall came in;
Schossa advanced on him a pistol in

Father Arkall bravely seized his anris,
and' Elizabeth Brooks, the presbytery
housekeeper came to his aid, suffering
severely With cut hands in preventing
Schossa from ,stabbing the priest.
Finally with the 'help or'some of the
congregation the villain was overpowered and delivered to the police.
Cardinal Manning (Catholic Primate of England) said Mass at the
church that evening, He referred to
the desecration and ordered a novena
of prayer. It seems that Schossa is a
Gennan Swiss Socialist who objected
to :m anti nihilist pamphlet written by
Father Bakanowski. He has admitted
,his intention'to kill the priest."

from the altar to the vestry and
hearing that' somebody . had tried to
kill a priest.

On' searching for my mother-inlaw's earlier family I searched films
dC. archives to get me back to 1765
and there are some Zennani names
there, (I (Olive) mentioned in
c.1rlier article that that was my Grandmother's maiden name) but not in the
current generation. that I am aware. I

Resteghini, the proprietor of 'The Coach and Horses
Public House' situated in Warner Street at the bollom of
Back Hill, and his companion In the dark Homberg
·trilby wearing the watch and chain is my husband's
maternal Grandfather Pietro Fassini; I'm not sure of
the names of the other two. They are clearly enjoying
themselves on a day out probably organised by Leu
(Alen only). The photo wauld have been taken in the

I know a lot about 'Italians, their
culture and having been' married for
45 years until my husband died 2

enough people with 'Family tree'
interests. Our children do' need' to
know who their cousins are and how
they all fit in and where ihey and
maybe their names originate! My
gra~dchildren do not even speal'
Italian and have integrated into the
English way of life. From 1900
Grandparents, only their name is
'Italian. However one thing is certain (hey all prefer Italian food! I wish
that the Parish registers of St Peter's
Chur<:h were coniputerised - as are
90% of other church ,Baptisms, Mar-,
riages - are included in '.the I.G.I
(International Genealogical Index)
and we could then find our own
earlier families much quicker.
The 1881 census is easy to search.
but one must know roughly where the
people, were living. This has been

I received the following letter

I am interested in finding out more
about my greai-great-grm1dfather who
was an artist's model (he modelled
for,. among others; Lord Leighton).
lIis name was Gaetano Valvona. He
was born in a village near Naples in
Montecassino in 1858 and at some
point (1 have not been able to, establish the date) emigrated to England.
He married in 1882 at St Peter's
Italian Church the 18 year old Ce~
leste Bianca. His father's name was
Domenico Valvona. He lived at 4
Bath Ct in the District of Holborn. On
talking to Gaetano's daughter Carmella, who is now '93, it appears
Gaetano also went on to live at 203
Ifendon Broadway. He died
In 19/2 and is
buried at Mill
IliU Cemetery,
Hendon with
his wife Celeste. Two of
their sons Fred
and John, have
plaques in
Hendon Catholic Church
conlmemorat·
ing their
deaths in the
First World
War. It is also
said that the

What Community?
We continue Ms Fortier's study
of the Italian Community
The annual Procession della Madonna del Carmine Constitutes another
way of investing 'a particular area' of
London with a distinctly' Italian presence. This event is the mostimportant affair of St Peter's, if not of the
'community'; Its significance . is the
result not only of the large crowds it
attracts, but of its very nature and the
cultural meanings that are' projected
•
onto it.
The procession takes'place on July
16, ,or the first Sunday thereafter.
Members of St· Peter's pride themselves on the fact that the first
procession .was, in 1883, the firSt
public' .demonstration' of Catholicism
to.haveoccuri'ed since the pre-Reformation days (SponzaI993: 133). In
this regard, this procession ,may hi:
read as a statement aimed .at British
national culture. ·In short, the. procession is about being. Italian Catllolic in
an English,' predominantly>: ProtestaDi
' . ' .
·world.
This particular form of veneration
of the· Madonna is not, however, it
typically Italian practice. In the wordS
of an organiser, the procession is tJie
·re-enactment of village feasts dedicated to their. respective patron Saints.
!' Since . we cannot have feasts for
each village of origin of ,London
'Italians,we hold ,this big event for all
.of them and we chose to honour Our
Lady".

Today. the procession travels
through the winding streets around St
Pete,r's church in a long and slow
re-mapping of Little Italy's 'core'; tile
heart of which is, the church, where
the procession .begins and ends. During the two hours it takes to complete,
the map of '1\ Quartiere Italiano' is
re-<irawn, the streets of the former
'Little Italy' are' re-appropriated and
invested with sounds, colours; odours
and images of Italy. TIle sagra (fair)
marks the distinction of London Italian Catholicism, where the sacred has
a taste and a smell. Stalls sell Italian
wine, salsiecia, cakes, or strawberries
and cream with sparkling wine. As in
all 'community' events, 'food and.
wine 'are part of this religious celebration.

This annual event is, for some, an·
unmissable moment of worship arid
religious devotion. For others, it, is a
feast, a time of reunion with friends
or family, a brief immersion in 'Italian
culture', for their children or grandchildren. This yearly perfonriance' is a
celebration of the, Italian presence in
London, where demonstrations' of
faith. and culture are simultaneously
displayed. In contrast to the, weekly
masses, ,this version of religious worship is much. more sccularised. Worshippers, organisers and participants
celebrate Italian culture, or, rather,
Italian religious culture, displaying
tlleir difference in a non-CatllOlic,
English world.

to a public of spectators who are not
overwhelmingly, though perhaps predominantly, Italian. It symbolises the
multicultural fabric of London and in
this respect, . is distinct from other
Italian 'community' events. It publicly
states the Italian presence in multicultural London. To make another distinction, other 'community events' arc
more internally directed: in order to
take' part in. tllem, one needs to be 'in
the know':
In summary, St Peter's church and
its surroundings, are invested with
memories tlmt produce a second place
of origin for Italians in Britain: "This
is where jt all began". St Peter's is
the stage where the story of settlement
is repeatedly told and acted
out. As such, it plays the
role of the guardian of Italians' second origins. What
is interesting, from a socio.logical point of view, is that
tllis idea of a sffiall section
of Clerkenwell as,asccond
.place of. origin. disturbs' our
·aCCepted.definitions of ori.gins. IndCed, as immigrants,
many might feel ·tlmt .their
origins arc multiple, especially the younger genera!jons. Most second generation Italians I have met say
that they come from· both
England and Italy: "My
heart and my blood arc
Italian; my brains are English". And for some, "The
Hill" is. one place of origin
insofar as their ancestors'
began life· in England in
those quarters. I like this
idea of multiple origins. It
,challenges nationalist conceptioris of culture that· bound it to a
single origin, thus excluding from the
national fold those who do· not come
from a delimited territory.
Nationalist definitions of identity
are also clmllenged. by the Centro
Sealabrini, though from a .different
vantage point. In contrast to St Peter's, the Centro attempts to proceed
from the drama of emigration in order
to create itself anew and differently.
The procession brings. together
diverse segments of the Italian population. However, this is not specific to
the procession: the pilgrimage to
Aylesford, or the annual Scalabrini
picnic, are as. multi-generational,
multi-regional· and multi,class events.
W!lat distinguishes tile. procession
from other Italian gatherings is not its
internally diverse character, but·.its
multi cultural one. In other words, tile
procession is a 'public' event; held in
selected streets of Clerkenwell, open

Louis Braille
Educatore francese, nacque a Coupvray nel 1809 e·
mori a parigi nel 1852. A 'soli tre anni, a seguito di una
grave malattia, divenne cicco. Venne accolto nelJ'Istituto
dci cicchi di Parigi dove pote studiare e diventare
insegnante egli stcsso (1827). Due anni dopo, assillato dal
desiderio di poter dare la luce del sapere ai suoi allievi e
compagni di sventura, ideo un sistema di scrittura, a punti·

Another studio with a history in
this field is Paranlount. The Star Trek
franchise turns over at least 'Slbri per
year. What they also experienced
before most of their counterparts was
the importance of the foreign .box
office. A few years ago Star Trek VlI:
Generations. enjoyed only mediocre
business in the States. Pens' were
poised to strike. through any further
sequels. However, in came the money
from Ule likes of Japan,' the UK,
Gennany, Brazil. It seems Paramount
had discovered life (i.e. business)
outside the V.S. Star Trek: First
Contact belongs to the rest of the
world.
This is a trend that seems to be
taking hold. Hence fewer quintessentially American films do well overall.

In my humble opinion the punishment adequately fitted the crime.

surprise retirement (what price a Sinatra like return?) Man Utd will be
.there or thereabouts. A more pragmatic Neweastle under Dalglish and
hopefully a Wenger inspired Arsenal
(aided 'by some close season purchases) ought to be there challenging
as well. With the sale of Collymore
the transfer market over the next two
months will also hold the key for
Liverpool's Championship chances. I
might be terribly wrong but I do not
see very much change at the top.
I fancy Ruud Gullitt, Alessandra
Evans, Donata Marco, Inna Pandolfo,

will not agree with that view.
They would make quite a team in

Method
Put a nonstick pan with 1 % pints of water on the Iieat.
When the water boils and salt add the maize flour a
lillle at'a time. stirring with a wooden spoon. Cook for
about 40 minutes. You could use the quick cook
'polenta flour. When, the polenta is cooked add the
bUller . (cut into small pieces), the two yolks and the
parmesan, a pinch of nutlneg and salt. Put the polenta
onto a chopping board or large plate. Cut into small
pieces to fonn gnocchi.

Metodo
PasSate iI gorgonzola al sctaccio. Aggiungete la panna e u.n
pizzico di sale. Mettete i gnoC'Chi a strati in 'una 'pirolila
irilbuiTata. Unite un po' di salsa su ogni strato. Cospargete
la superfice con iI parmigiano. Passate in fomo prescaldato 200 01N0. 6 pCr IS minuti. (potete addoperare salsa
'di pomodoro e pannigiano invcce di quella di gorgonzola.)
Method
Put the gorgonzola through a sieve. Add' the cream
and a' pinch of salt. Put the gnocchi into a greased
oven-to-table dish. Add a little. sauce on c.1ch layer.
Cover with pannesan. Place in preheated oven
2000/Gas No 6 for IS minutes. (Instead of gorgonzola
sauce 'you can use a good tomato sauce with
pannesan.)
Gnocchidi Ca rote
Carrot Gnocchi
Ingredienti
400 gr di carote
400 gr di patate
400 gr di ricotta
400 gr di farina
2 uova
salclparmigiano
Ingredients
14 oz carrots
14 oz potatoes
14 oz ricotta cheese
14 oz flO\J'r plain
2 eggs
saltIPannesan cheese
Metodo
Pelate le carote, tagliatele a pezzctti e cucinatele in acqua
salata. Scolatele e passatele nella schiaccia patate. Lessate
lepatate; quando saranno cotte subcciatele e schiacciatele.
Lasciatele intiepidire. Lavorate la ricotta finchC sia ,cremosa. Unitela alle carote e patate e sale e mescolate bene.
Incorporate le ilOva uno alia voila e, in fine, la farina. Se
I'impasto e troppo morbido aggiungete ancora farina. Con
I'impasto fonnate dei salsiciotti alti Come un dito.
Tagliateli a pi:Zzclli e strisciateli sn una forehella formando
dei gnocchi. Cucinateli un po' alia voila in abbondante
acqua salata. Quando vengano a galla toglieteli e scolateli.
Conditeli con burro fuso e pannigiano 0 con una buona
salsa di pomodoro.
Method
Peel the carrots, cut them in smallish pieces and cook
in salty water. Drain, dry and mash them. Cook the
potatoes, then peel them and mash them in the potato
masher. Allow them to cool. BC.1t the ricolla until
creamy. Mix the ricolla, potatoes and carrots and salt
together. Add the eggs, one at a time and finally the
flour. Should the mixture be too son, add more flour.
Roll the mixture a Iillle at a'time fonning sausages as
wide as a finger. Cut into small pieces, roll on the side
of a fork to form gnocchi. Cook a few at a time in
plenty of salty water. When they rise to the surface
remove and drain. Serve with melted buttcr and
pannesan or a good tomato sauce and parmesan.
