ONLINE INTERFACE
This course uses an online class management system called WebCT that allows students to view course
material, assignments and grades using the Internet. The WebCT login page for this course is located at
http://myreddragon.cortland.edu. For first-time users, both your username and password are your Cortland

STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO STORE CLASS PROJECTS ON NEW USB FLASH DRIVES
(RECOMMENDED), PERSONNAL EXTERNAL HARDDRIVES, OR CD-ROMS DURING THE
COURSE. STUDENTS WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO STORE FILES ON THE HARD DRIVES
IN STUDIO WEST 125, 128 OR 130 ON A PERMANENT BASIS.
Additional required reading, tutorial and reference materials will be distributed in class by Dr.
Bauer.
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This is a research-intensive course in a digital video analysis software system. Students will engage in
applied strategies for the shooting, capture, analysis and distribution of digital video as related to their
discipline. Advanced use of digital video analysis software and hardware will involve a course-long
research project in the student’s field of study. Students will work on capturing video relevant to the
research question posed in SPM 536.
PREREQUISITES: SPM 536
COURSE FORMAT AND CONTENT:
There will be classroom, laboratory and online content in this course. Several discipline-specific case
studies will be fully discussed.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
The goal of this course is for students to have the ability to utilize a digital video analysis system for
applied research related to their discipline and receive certification.
At the completion of this experience students will be able to:
Fully understand the role of digital video analysis in their discipline.
Comprehend the latest digital video terminology.
Receive Level I Certification in Dartfish digital video analysis software
Demonstrate an advanced understanding of the software and hardware processes used to shoot,
capture, analyze and distribute digital video
Understand how digital video analysis can be used in advanced discipline-specific research
Show an advanced-level competence in proprietary digital video analysis software, including Dartfish
Use Dartfish TeamPro software to analyze individual, team and/or classroom performance
Discern the advanced components of basic, fundamental movement patterns (CF: Knowledge Base)
Assess advanced motor performance in children and adults (CF: Assessment)
Understand, at an advanced level, role of digital video technology in teacher education (CF:
Technology)
Demonstrate the principles of ethical behavior in their digital video analysis project.
Develop a personal/professional philosophy for strategic applications of digital video analysis
Demonstrate the ability to work in a self-directed manner as an individual or as a member of a project
work team.
Demonstrate competency and skills necessary to secure a highly competitive internship or job
placement through opportunities for personal growth and accomplishment provided by their specific
discipline-based projects.

COURSE POLICIES
Course Attendance Policy:
Students should attend and be active participants in all class meetings, whether live or online.
Assignment Deadlines & Requirements:
Students are advised to keep up with the class schedule so that if an emergency arises, they will still
have their required assignments completed.
All assignments and projects are due on the due date specified by Dr. Bauer. Late assignments will
NOT be accepted.

Certification Exam
The Dartfish Level I Certification Exam will be given at the end of this course. For those who wish to take
the test for certification purposes $75 certification fee is required. 75 percent of the test is practical and 25
percent is written. This certification is created and authorized by Dartfish USA and the Sport Media &
Technology Learning Center at SUNY Cortland.
EVERYONE in the course will take the exam, but the certification and associated fee is optional.
Semester Long Research Project
Students will engage in a discipline-specific advanced digital video analysis research project. This project
will involve hands-on experience developing materials to be analyzed by a minimum of two professors (in
addition to Dr. Bauer) associated with your master’s program.
