2011 Graduate Luncheon and Awards
The School of Recreation Studies and Exercise Science honored 30 seniors at the annual graduate luncheon.
Outstanding majors were recognized.

LSSU Curriculum Committee Approves
New Coaching Minor
Jody Susi, Sara Rewa, Outstanding Exercise
Science Graduate, and Amy Molenaar
The newly approved coaching minor is an interdisciplinary
program comprised of Exercise Science, Athletic Training,
Sport and Recreation Management, and Park and Recreation
courses that should appeal to students university-wide. For

Lake Superior State University adjunct instructor Dillon Carr, center,
readies for a personalized fitness evaluation from Exercise Science
students Kevin White, Olivia Francis, Dave Lyvere, and Jordan
Hamamoto. LSSU's Exercise Science sponsored Fitness Week with
prizes being awarded at the end of the week to the fittest male and
female LSSU student and Sault-area resident.
The LSSU Exercise Science Club hosted a conference
for the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM)
on March 4th-6th to prepare Exercise Science students
for their personal training certificate. The conference
was directed by educator and adventure seeker Mary
Phyl Dwight, who is an Assistant Clinical Professor and
Exercise Science Program Coordinator at the University
of Missouri in Kansas City.
The 2nd Annual Iron Chef Competition for the Sport
Nutrition class was held on April 8th. Eighteen students
prepared their dish based on a specific athlete scenario.

Biology student, Savannah Pavlat and
Exercise Science junior, Sarah Schulz
received a $500
LSSU undergraduate
research grant. They
will be investigating
the influence of high
and moderate intensity exercise on body
mass and resting
metabolic rate among
women aged 18-40
years of age.

Senior Exercise Science student, Tasha Carroll received the LSSU Achievement Scholarship for 2011-2012. This is a merit
based scholarship where the student must have demonstrated scholastic achievement and/or GPA improvement during their
LSSU experience. Students are also evaluated on an essay and support from faculty. Congratulations Tasha!

Exercise Science graduate, Chad Nehring received a pro contract to play hockey with the Idaho Steelheads.

Adrian Vilacca won the Mixed Martial Arts competition at Kewadin Casino this spring

ES internship students, Amanda Pieczynski and Kevin While were involved in various aspects of the Exercise Performance
Lab, including the instruction of group fitness classes, personal and sport performance training, and hosting the Free Fitness
Fridays brown bag series.

March was National Athletic Training Month
•
This year's motto was: "Not all athletes wear jerseys. Athletic trainers treat the athlete in you." A showcase created by ATE students
and faculty was on display in the Cappuccino Corner.
• Senior Athletic Training student, Stephenie Gakstatter was interviewed during intermission of a Laker Hockey radio broadcast.
• Walking dogs for the Sault Animal Shelter on March 17
• Athletic Training Month concluded with a CEU opportunity for certified athletic trainers with a SLAP Lesions workshop presented by
Nan Kingsbury PT, ATC of the War Memorial Hospital Rehabilitation Center.
SATA members, Ben Ayton, Mattie Taylor,
Amy Olar, Steven McLeod, Sarah Ouimette,
Lacey Knoop, Kayla Nowak, Brianna Bowker,
Joe Susi, James Niemi, and Sean Vardy participated in a tubing and pizza party held at the Seal
Recreation Park.
LSSU ATEP would like to welcome Kris Veverka MS, ATC to campus as a
staff athletic trainer. Kris completed her undergraduate degree from Bowling
Green State University and her Master's Degree from Marshall University in
WV. She will act as an approved clinical instructor for the ATEP.

The Student Athletic Trainer's Association (SATA) sponsored two
needy children during the Christmas season.
Athletic Training students Lacey Knoop, Kayla Nowak and Amy Olar
raised $150 to be donated to Special Olympics as they participated in
the annual Polar Plunge in February.
Sarah Ouimette MEPD, ATC, PTA and Athletic Training students, Ben
Ayton, Steven McLeod, Kayla Nowak, and Lacey Knoop made the 10
hour trek to attend the GLATA Conference in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
A Standard First Aid and CPR class was offered for members of
LSSU's Worksite Wellness Program. Joseph D. Susi II, PhD, ATC instructed the course while Athletic Training students assisted participants
in the skill components of the course.
SATA raised $680 for breast cancer research by selling t-shirts at home
athletic events.

Bowker and James Niemi attended a course for undecided majors at
LSSU and presented information on the field.
Alumni Updates
Amy (Tonkin) Metiva, ATC 1993, has a new position as an athletic trainer at
Bay Medical Center providing outreach to Pinconning HS.
Kristi Morman, ATC 2009, has taken a position as an ATC in Chicago, IL.
Chris Hurley PT, ATC has taken a position at Carroll University in Milwaukee, WI as a clinical assistant professor in their Physical Therapy Program.
Nicole Nichols PT, ATC is currently working in Port Arthur, TX as a physical therapist.
Current Athletic Training student, Steven McLeod is following in the footsteps of two LSSU ATEP alumni, Adam Ancel, ATC 2007 and Michael
Shampo, ATC 2009, by being selected to work at the Miami University
Hockey School this summer.
Athletic Training student, Mattie Taylor will be completing her internship
this summer working with MSU Athletics.
Kayla Nowak, current AT student, has been accepted in the DPT program at
Ohio University in Athens, OH

Exercise Performance Lab Update
The Exercise Performance Lab now has its own newsletter. Look for this on the school website. Highlights this spring:
Research:
• January 11-present, Alyssa Loney (Biology) and Amy Molenaar are investigating "the relationship between protein supplementation and the maintenance of muscular strength among division II women's basketball players during a competition season".
• March 4 - present, Savannah Pavlat (Biology), Sarah Schulz (Exercise Science) and Amy Molenaar, are investigating
"the influence of high and moderate intensity exercise on body mass and resting metabolic rate in women aged 18-40
years of age".
Special Events for Community Outreach
• Fit for Life was presented by Amy Molenaar for the Lake Superior Elders
• Valentines Couple's Yoga class by Lee Carlson who taught 14 participants the techniques for giving and receiving a
relaxing and healing Traditional Thai Massage.
• Group Fitness Class Offerings
• Free Fitness Fridays were offered as brown bag seminars to campus and community members by EPL interns. A few
of the topics were: Essentials of Designing a Strength Training Program; Swiss Ball Basics, Upper Body; First 5K, How
to Prepare for Your First Race; Bring on the Band! (resistance bands).
Team Training and Personal Training, Assessment, and Programming:
Services are being offered thru the EPL for training individuals and teams. EPL intern, Amanda Pieczynski, developed an
off-season and competition season physical training program for the Sault High School Volleyball and Basketball teams
along with physical training of the athletes. An off-season strength and conditioning program was also developed for the
Sault High School Hockey team They have also committed to a contract for testing and team training for fall 2011.
