School of Recreation Studies and Exercise Science Athletic Training—Exercise Science—Parks and Recreation—Sport and Recreation Management Lake Superior State University 1 1 T H E D I T I O N F A L L 2 0 1 1 RSES Summer and Fall 2011 Highlights The School of Recreation Studies and Exercise Science began the fall 2011 semester with 195 majors, an increase of over 12% from fall 2010. • The Exercise Physiology Lab has expanded with assistance from LSSU Strategic Initiative funding • Sarah Schulz, junior Exercise Science major, has submitted her research abstract in hopes of presenting at the National Conference of Undergraduate Research at Weber State University, Utah in late March 2012. • Dr. Sally Childs, was the LSSU faculty representative to Japan sister university, University of Shiga Prefecture for one week in July. Dr. Childs presented on US National Parks. • Dr. Childs attended an Ombudsman workshop at Northern Illinois University in July. • Parks and Recreation has expanded its Pathfinders program and is now serving Advanced Technology Academy in Dearborn and the American International Academy in Detroit. • Dr. Joe Susi participated in a CAATE site visit at Gustavus Adolphus College in Saint Peter, Minnesota in November. • Professor Deb McPherson escorted a group of twenty alumni, faculty, and faculty emeriti to Russia, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania during the month of May. • Ten Park and Recreation/Sport and Recreation Management majors presented their senior research projects on Friday, December 9th. • Seven area professionals participated in administrative forums designed by Park and Recreation and Sport and Recreation Management majors during the fall Jake Sims and Ben Dietrich host Kelsey Schnell, Marketing Director for Mackinac Historic State Parks in their capstone administration course Matt Bruneteau demonstrating a pullup technique in the new Exercise Physiology Lab The new Exercise Physiology Lab begins to shape-up. 11TH EDITION Athletic Training PAGE The LSSU ATEP would like to welcome the newest students admitted to the ATEP. They are Ryan Peroceschi (Norway, Michigan); Michael McPherson (Ironwood, Michigan); Amy Olar (Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario), Kathryn Gingras (Iron Mountain, Michigan) and Katia Locke (Rudyard, Michigan). The LSSU ATEP has seen a drastic increase in majors. Last year at this time, there were 29 athletic training majors. This fall that number has increased to 54 athletic training majors. Athletic Training Senior Mattie Taylor (Clinton Township) and Junior Katia Locke (Rudyard) attended the Student Leadership Conference held at Grand Valley State University 11/5/11. LSSU ATEP Clinical Coordinator Sarah Ouimette and Program Director Joe Susi accompanied several athletic training students to the 8th MATS Student Seminar and Quiz Bowl held at Grand Valley State University 11/6/11. Students included: Sophomores: Sarah Smith, Megan Schatzley, Shelby Harvey, Paige Withorn, Janelle Spires, and Anya Malloch. Juniors: Katia Locke, Amy Olar, Kathryn Gingrass, Ryan Peroceschi, and Michael McPherson. Seniors: Mattie Taylor. Two Quiz Bowl Teams were submitted, they consisted of Team 1 (Mattie Taylor, Michael McPherson and Ryan Peroceschi) and Team 2 (Amy Olay, Katia Locke and Kathryn Gingras). July 29, 30, and 31, 2011 saw LSSU ATEP Alumni Nicola Gray and Ethan Nayback again provide volunteer medical services for the Breast Cancer Walk held in Cleveland, Ohio. The Student Athletic Trainer’s Association (SATA) has elected its officers for the 2011-2012 academic year. They are: Michael McPherson, President; Ryan Peroceschi,Vice President; Katia Locke, Secretary; and Mattie Taylor, Treasurer. SATA is selling water bottles as a fundraiser for Leader Dogs. Junior, Katia Locke is helping raise a puppy, ATLAS who has become a member of our family. AT Alumni News • • • • • • Ethan Nayback completed his graduate work in Athletic Training from GVSU. Nicola Gray has taken a new position at Sault College in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. Kara Poldmaa (2010), Kayla Nowak (2011), Steven McLeod (2011) and Stephenie Gakstatter (2011) have all passed their BOC Examination. Kayla Nowak (2011) is attending graduate school at Ohio University earning her DPT. Steven McLeod (2011) has received a graduate assistantship at CMU and is teaching introductory level athletic training classes. The stork visits. Nikki Harrer Brown gave birth to daughter Paige; Karen Stinson Miller gave birth to son Gavin; Kelly Wood Hatton gave birth to son Evan; Jessica Harper McLeod gave birth to daughter Grace;and Chris Fink’s wife gave birth to son Luca. Jeremy Schraufnagel has just completed his Sport and Recreation Management internship with the NFL's Washington Redskins. Jamie Metheringham, '07, Superintendent for Island Lake State Park and Eric Ostrander '01, Superintendent of Harrisville State Park, visit with Dr. Sally Childs. Courtney Bailey, will be submitting her research topic, "Evaluating LSSU Fire Science Majors' Physical Fitness". New business to the Sault, Anytime Fitness, and LSSU Exercise Science have agreed on a regular practicum position available on a per semester basis to qualified exercise science students. Amanda Pieczynski, ES '11' was recently hired by Anytime Fitness as a personal trainer ES Alumni News Gordon Jacobs passed his ACSM certifications and has been hired as the Head Health and Fitness Specialist of the Delta and Grand River Lansing General Motors plants. Greg Scharf, Exercise Physiologist at Portage Health in Hancock, MI was responsible for designing and managing "Rx Exercise", a clinical exercise program in which physicians refer special populations such as hypertensive patients, diabetics, obese patients, and patients with fibromyalgia for prescriptive exercise under the direct care of an exercise physiologist. A.J. Krey is teaching Allied Health, Nutrition, and Strength and Conditioning at Cheboygan High School, while also an oncall Exercise Physiologist for Northern Michigan Hospital. Anna Neal has passed her ACSM Health Fitness certification. Tim Feathers has been hired by Elite Fitness Clubs in Brookfield, WI. Sara Rewa is employed with the YMCA in Grand Rapids, MI. • • • • • • Professor Amy Molenaar's EXER 444 Exercise Prescription class participating in "Group Fitness Exercise Class" Exercise Science Club Activities ◊ ◊ Set up the Exercise Physiology Lab by creating rules and regulations, organizing supplies, and arranging exercise equipment. Fund raising to attend the ARNOLD Classic strength and conditioning conference in Columbus, Ohio in March 2012 Exercise Physiology Lab ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ The second annual Sweetest Day Yoga, a Partner Yoga Therapy class was taught by Lee Carlson on October 15th in light of "Sweetest Day". The "partner" session taught participants basic pressing, pulling, stretching and body manipulations to improve flexibility, alleviate pain, release stress and tension, and facilitate a deep sense of relaxation and bonding. Amanda Pieczynski, ES alum, has been hired through the lab for personal training. She also instructs Fit for Life with an increase in numbers since her arrival. A personal training studio (with new equipment) will open next semester. The studio will be staffed with upper level exercise science students and/or an intern available for drop-in personal training sessions, physical fitness testing and exercise program designing. Free Fitness Fridays - Sarah Schulz instructed our FFF brownbag workshops this semester. She spoke on topics such as kettle bells to training programs, foam roller exercises, and circuit training on the go!
