Graduates and special award winners were honored and recognized at the Annual Graduate Luncheon on Friday, April 12th at the Walker Cisler Center. Graduates include: Athletic Training: Brianna Bowker, Kathryn Gingras, Katia Locke, Michael McPherson, James Niemi, Amy Olar, Ryan Peroceschi. Exercise Science: Maria Blazejewski, Brian Cooper, Rachelle Donakowski, Aaron Eastham, Michael Goetz, Charity Henson, Nicholas Jobe, Angela Komar, Tina Robinson, Sarah Schulz. Parks and Recreation: Jordyn Dracht, Cassandra Fabbri, Alec Kaeding, Nickolas Kosin, Nicholas Sawinski. Sport and Recreation Management: Donnie Bruni, Alexander Feravich, Lisa Ritchie, Brett Wall Exercise Science major, Megan Sundstrom is presented the 2013-14 Russell Bruce Scholarship by SRM major, Alex Feravich, the 2012-13 scholarship recipient Sarah Schulz, Outstanding Exercise Science graduate recipient and advisor, Jody Susi Outstanding Athletic Training graduate, Michael McPherson receives the award from advisors, Sarah Ouimette and Dr. Joseph Susi, II Deb McPherson presents Alexander Feravich with the Outstanding Sport and Recreation Management graduate award. 14TH EDITION Athletic Training PAGE 2 Closing out Athletic Training Month, Sault Ste. Marie Mayor, the Honorable Tony Bosbous declared March as Athletic Training Month and March 18th as Athletic Training Day in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. This was done by reading a proclamation to the members of the City Commission during a scheduled meeting. The ATEP was presented with a framed copy of the proclamation. LSSU ATEP Faculty, Joe Susi and Sarah Ouimette and current athletic training students were present for the proclamation as well as athletic trainers representing the War Memorial Hospital Rehabilitation Department, Steven LaPlaunt (2009), Matt Mcleod (2009), Nikki Brown (2004) and Courtney Hill March was a very busy month as the SATA and the ATEP promoted National Athletic Training Month. This year’s slogan was, “Every Body Needs an Athletic Trainer.” Promotion of Athletic Training Month was placed on the university marquee. Sarah Ouimette and Joe Susi attended the GLATA meeting March 12-16 in Wheeling, Illinois. Athletic training students Glenn Watchorn, Rachel Morairty, Shelby Harvey, Paige Withorn, and Megan Schatzley also attended. One major reason to attend this meeting was to show support for seniors Amy Olar, Michael McPherson and Ryan Peroceschi as they represented Michigan in the District Quiz Bowl. Six states comprise District 4 (which is the district that Michigan is in) consisting of 81 CAATE Accredited Programs. The LSSU seniors placed second out of 6 teams at the GLATA Quiz Bowl. Congratulations to them. The SATA sponsored Christmas presents for two local children with the donation of a Headanz Game, Trouble, Toy Helicopter, Matchbox Cars ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ The LSSU ATEP sponsored its Laff-O-Limpics competition The LSSU ATEP applied for the 6th Annual Bill Cramer Professional Development Award. For the past 6 years Cramer Products has been sponsoring a $2000 award in memory of Bill Cramer to a CAATE Accredited ATEP. This is the 6th year that the LSSU ATEP has applied for this award. Eight students have applied for application into the LSSU ATEP for the 2013-2014 academic year. The SATA held a pancake breakfast on Saturday February 9th. Menu items included: Pancakes, Sausage, Scrambled Eggs, Fruit and Beverages. This was held as a fund raiser for the club with a focus on attending the GLATA Meeting in March. In conjunction with the pancake breakfast, a raffle and a silent auction was held. While attending the GLATAconference, LSSU Alumni, Amy Metiva ‘93, Nicola Gray ‘06, Karen Miller ‘06 and Ethan Nayback ‘06 catch up with Joe Susi at Buca di Beppo’s . Sarah Ouimette and seven athletic training students headed south to Traverse City to work the 2013 Special Olympic Winter games again this year. She was accompanied by Rachel Morairity, Shelby Harvey, Cassidee Reitzloff, Megan Schatzley, Ryan Peroceschi, and Jenelle Spires. While there, they visited LSSU Alum Steven McLeod who is completing his Master’s Degree from Central Michigan University. Jake Neukom (AT) ‘94 has opened Omega Physical Therapy. Becky Steffler, (SRM) now a member of the National Senior Games. Jackie Armstrong (ES) is working as a clinical dietician in California. Sara Cubr (ES) has received her ACSM certification. Andrea Cripps (AT) graduated from the University of Kentucky with a PhD and will begin employment at New Mexico State as a faculty member. ES students tested the LSSU Golf team. Sarah Schulz, ES senior will be attending the University of Minnesota studying Occupational Therapy. Five students (Aaron Eastham, Darin Kanouse, Denise Custard, Rachel Carruthers and Olivia Francis) were selected to attend a summer workshop series, sponsored by the AAHPERD (American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance). The workshop is to learn innovative techniques for providing exercise to children and adolescents. The EUPISD is hosting the series and invited these 5 students to attend at no cost. They were selected based on their participation in extracurricular activities and scholastic achievement. Maria Blazejewski, ES senior will be playing professional basketball in Europe.
