Closing out Athletic Training Month,
Sault Ste. Marie Mayor, the Honorable
Tony Bosbous declared March as Athletic
Training Month and March 18th as Athletic Training Day in Sault Ste. Marie,
Michigan. This was done by reading a
proclamation to the members of the City
Commission during a scheduled meeting.
The ATEP was presented with a framed
copy of the proclamation. LSSU ATEP
Faculty, Joe Susi and Sarah Ouimette and
current athletic training students were
present for the proclamation as well as
athletic trainers representing the War Memorial Hospital Rehabilitation Department, Steven LaPlaunt (2009), Matt
Mcleod (2009), Nikki Brown (2004) and
Courtney Hill
March was a very busy month as the SATA and the ATEP promoted National Athletic Training Month. This year’s slogan was, “Every Body
Needs an Athletic Trainer.” Promotion of Athletic Training Month was
placed on the university marquee. Sarah Ouimette and Joe Susi attended
the GLATA meeting March 12-16 in Wheeling, Illinois. Athletic training
students Glenn Watchorn, Rachel Morairty, Shelby Harvey, Paige Withorn,
and Megan Schatzley also attended. One major reason to attend this meeting was to show support for seniors Amy Olar, Michael McPherson and
Ryan Peroceschi as they represented Michigan in the District Quiz Bowl.
Six states comprise District 4 (which is the district that Michigan is in) consisting of 81 CAATE Accredited Programs. The LSSU seniors placed second out of 6 teams at the GLATA Quiz Bowl. Congratulations to them.
The SATA sponsored Christmas presents for two
local children with the donation of a Headanz
Game, Trouble, Toy Helicopter, Matchbox Cars

For the past 6 years Cramer Products has been
sponsoring a $2000 award in memory of Bill
Cramer to a CAATE Accredited ATEP. This is
the 6th year that the LSSU ATEP has applied
for this award.
Eight students have applied for application into
the LSSU ATEP for the 2013-2014 academic
year.
The SATA held a pancake breakfast on Saturday February 9th. Menu items included: Pancakes, Sausage, Scrambled Eggs, Fruit and
Beverages. This was held as a fund raiser for
the club with a focus on attending the GLATA
Meeting in March. In conjunction with the
pancake breakfast, a raffle and a silent auction
was held.
While attending
the GLATAconference, LSSU
Alumni, Amy
Metiva ‘93, Nicola Gray ‘06,
Karen Miller ‘06
and Ethan Nayback ‘06 catch up
with Joe Susi at
Buca di Beppo’s .
Sarah Ouimette and seven athletic training students headed south to
Traverse City to work the 2013 Special Olympic Winter games again
this year. She was accompanied by Rachel Morairity, Shelby Harvey,
Cassidee Reitzloff, Megan Schatzley, Ryan Peroceschi, and Jenelle
Spires. While there, they visited LSSU Alum Steven McLeod who is
completing his Master’s Degree from Central Michigan University.
The LSSU ATEP continues to be the only ATEP in the state to have
their athletic training students work these winter games.
