Notes:
1. Aboriginal identity is self-declared on the Admission form. Because the self-declaration is voluntary,
the numbers reported would be less than the total population of Canadian Aboriginal students on campus.
Undergraduate data collection began in 2000-01. Data collection for graduate students began in 2002-03.
2. 2003-04 data has been restated based on increased efforts to improve on the collection of declaration data.
3. 'Others' includes faculties/schools with less than three students.

Undergraduate Student Credit Hours (UGSCH) are the hours of weight associated with a course indicating the relative weight
of the course in the program of studies. There is often a correlation between lecture class hours and hours of credit; for
example, a full course carrying six (6) hours of credit may entail three (3) hours of lectures per week, both terms. This report
includes: (a) distance education credit hours - students taking all of their courses through a distance method of delivery, such
as Independent Study, on-line web, video conferencing, computer mediated study, telecourse or community based study; (b)
all courses taught off-campus with stipend from other than faculty or school resources; (c) courses taught "on-load" - taught
during the summer session but considered part of the regular session for load unit purposes. This report excludes credit hours
declared as "Challenge for Credit".
The Department of Agricultural Economics & Farm Management changed its name to the Department of Agribusiness &
Agricultural Economics in 2001-2002.
Undergraduate program in Architecture was revised in 2000-2001. Admissions to Interior Design ended and students must
now enter Environmental Design to do a foundation program. For the stated reason, percent change is not applicable.
Catholic Studies and Global Political Economy were new in 2001-2002.
Faculty of Environment new in 2003. Prior to 2003, the Department of Geography was reflected under the Faculty of Arts and
the Departments of Environmental Science and Geological Sciences were reflected under the Faculty of Science. Decrease in
credit hours mainly in first year courses. Faculty of Environment courses no longer satisfy some of the B.A. and B.Sc. degree
requirements.
The Asper School of Business was formerly reported as the Faculty of Management
The Department of Civil & Geological Engineering has changed its name to the Department of Civil Engineering in 2001-2002.
The Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering has changed its name to the Department of Mechanical and
Manufacturing Engineering in 2004.
The Departments of Environmental Science and Geography combined to form the Department of Environment and Geography.
The Department of Family Studies has changed its name to the Department of Family Social Sciences in 2004.
The Department of Foods and Nutrition has changed its name to the Department of Human Nutritional Sciences in 2001-2002.
The Departments of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Human Genetics were merged into the Department of Biochemistry
and Medical Genetics in 2000-2001.
Includes credit hours from the accelerated program run during the summer session.
The Departments of Applied Mathematics, Mathematics and Introduction to Mathematical Sciences were merged into the
Department of Mathematics in 2000-2001.

1. The cost per FTE student is, by definition, sensitive to the number of FTE students within a given faculty
in any given year. Much of the variation in the costs between years can be attributed to the normal
fluctuation in student counts. As such programs of study with smaller numbers of graduate students may
record higher degrees of volatility in costs between years as compared to programs with larger populations.
Also, graduate programs of study that do not have graduate students will show the entire allocated cost.
2. Graduate FTE students in the Faculty of Medicine do not include Post Graduate Medical Education
(P.G.M.E.) students.

Notes
• No adjustments were made for courses taught combined between departments or faculties/schools.
• The number of students enrolled in the program was used for calculating ratios for Dentistry (undergraduate Dentistry and Dental Hygiene and B.Sc.
Dentistry students) and Medicine (undergraduate Medicine and Medical Rehabilitation and BSc. Medicine students).
• The ratios for the Faculty of Environment were calculated by moving the departments of Geography, Geological Science, Environmental Sciences
and the Natural Resources Institute into this faculty along with their associated credit hours and Full-Time FTE Faculty. One additional FTE was
also added to represent a Dean for this new faculty.
Undergraduate Standard Student Conversion Factor
The total credit hours taken by students registered in that faculty’s programs are divided by the normal prescribed credit hour load for that faculty
(average value weighted by full-time enrolment in all years of undergraduate programs). (Source: 2003-2004 IS Book)
Ratio
This value is calculated by dividing the FFTE students by the FTE academic. This value will then provide an indication of relative undergraduate
teaching load, based on undergraduate student credit hours.
Full-Time Equivalent (FTE) Faculty
Full-Time Equivalent (FTE) is that proportion of a full-time position that an employee works. A full-time staff member counts as 1.0 FTE. Special
academic such as graders or workers are not included. (Source: 2003-2004 IS Book)
Fiscal Full - Time Equivalent Students
This value is determined by dividing the total credit hours by the average normal prescribed credit hour load for the faculty. This is also known as
the Standard Student Conversion Factor. For example 30 hours of Arts would be the “fiscal” equivalent of one full time student.
Definitions
Course Level of Undergraduate Student Credit Hours (UGSCH’s)
Multiplying the credit hours value of a course by the number of students enrolled. These UGSCH’s are then broken down by course level where the
100 level courses represent introductory courses.
