GREETINGS!
Take
a
moment
to
make
yourself
a
cup
of
tea
and
“pausa.”
I
have
a
story
to
tell
you.
It
is
not
that
the
story
is
so
long
you
will
need
refreshment;
it
is
just
that
a
cup
of
tea
seems
like
good
way
to
celebrate
who
you
are
and
what
you
do.
Whether
you
are
a
teacher
reading
this,
or
a
student,
or
the
parent
of
a
student,
you
are
involved
in
something
almost
magical,
and
absolutely
life
giving.
That
“something”
is
music,
and
music
is
indeed
something
to
celebrate.
Recently
an
alumnus
of
the
Division
of
Preparatory
Studies
was
in
Winnipeg
to
perform
in
a
concert
presented
by
the
Women’s
Music
Club
of
Winnipeg.
In
preparation
for
the
concert,
this
young
woman
was
in
the
Music
Building
to
rehearse.
Keeping
her
company
was
her
younger
brother,
also
a
student
in
our
division.
As
I
was
also
in
the
building
preparing
for
masterclasses
on
the
subsequent
day,
I
observed
brother
and
sister
exploring
the
poster,
which
boasted
the
Winnipeg
Music
Festival
results,
on
which
his
name
appeared
numerous
times.
We
greeted
each
other
cordially
then
went
about
our
prospective
business.
Their
business
took
them
into
a
studio
and
mine
kept
me
moving
about
the
adjacent
hallways.
Apparently
in
an
act
of
familial
support
the
sister
became
the
teacher
to
the
brother
who
began
to
perform
behind
the
closed,
but
not
soundproof
door,
one
of
the
pieces
he
was
working
on
for
an
upcoming
musical
commitment
of
his
own.
At
the
end
of
the
brother’s
vigorous
and
impressive
performance,
the
sister
could
be
heard
to
exclaim
“V!
I!”
Her
applause
provided
percussion
to
her
exuberant
“Good!”
What
was
remarkable
enough
was
the
collegiality
between
siblings
–
the
generous
ease
with
which
the
two
amicably
support
one
another
in
a
discipline,
which
is
often
so
ruthless
in
its
competitiveness,
even,
and
especially,
at
times,
among
family
members.
What
was
MAGICAL
was
the
fact
that
the
exclamations
were
not
emitted
in
the
voice
of
the
sister,
but
in
the
voice
of
her
own
beloved
first
teacher,
now
passed
on.
For
that
moment,
and
in
myriad
other
moments,
not
presently
observed
or
herein
recorded,
the
voice
of
the
teacher
is
heard
through
the
voice
of
the
student.
How
can
this
happen?
It
can
and
does
happen
because
music,
and
the
sharing
of
it,
is
transcendent.
The
relationship
between
teacher
and
student,
founded
securely
on
the
week
by
week,
year
by
year
interaction,
climbing
the
mountain
of
skill
development,
through
clear
and
cloud‐hung
skies,
along
easy
paths
and
those
of
tenuous
grip
along
the
bald
face
of
the
ascent,
is
like
music
itself,
almost
magical
and
absolutely
life‐giving.
2
What
remains
beyond
life
and
what
is
given
to
and
through
Life,
is
love
–
in
this
case
love
of
learning
and
of
the
learner,
and
love
of
teaching
and
love
of
the
teacher.
When
one
spends
time
in
the
company
of
another
with
whom
there
is
mutual
belief,
integrity,
and
respect
and
trust,
a
deepening
occurs
which
is
both
timeless
and
beyond
time.
This
was
not
my
first
observation
of
the
magic,
and
neither
do
I
expect
it
to
be
my
last.
But
my
cup
of
tea
is
getting
cold,
and
I
think
I
can
hear
the
kettle
whistling
in
your
kitchen,
with
the
pot
beckoning.
Enjoy
the
“pausa.

THANK
YOU!
Clinicians
and
teachers,
who
advanced
the
skills
of
the
students
in
the
following:
Mary
Hawn,
Composition
Workshop,
March
22
Participants
in
the
composition
workshop
submitted
a
copy
of
their
work
in
advance
of
the
event
to
facilitate
a
review
by
the
clinician
who
commented
on
the
merits
of
each
and
offered
suggestions
for
the
students
to
consider
in
terms
of
additions
or
alterations
to
the
present
score‐under‐development.
Two
pragmatic
items
were
addressed.
The
first
item
was
finding
an
efficient
mechanism
for
setting
a
composition
down
and
picking
it
up
again
in
the
course
of
its
evolution.
The
clinician
recommended
that
when
one
is
concluding
a
composing
session,
it
is
very
helpful
to
establish
a
“coming
back
to”
point
by
sketching
out
the
subsequent
section
at
least
minimally,
so
there
is
expectation
of
continuing.
The
second
point
of
address
was
how
to
handle
a
“stall.”
The
clinician
suggested
having
a
“conversation
with
self”
regarding
the
final
notes
of
the
piece,
and
establishing
a
pathway
to
them
by
examining
musical
possibilities.
Consider
a
few
different
harmonic
routes,
rhythmic
impetus,
melodic
tendencies,
before
going
to
sleep,
and
letting
the
subconscious
do
the
choosing
overnight
and
providing
“the
answer”
upon
awakening.

Judy
Kehler
Siebert,
Piano
masterclass,
Grades
8
‐
ARCT,
April
5
The
masterclass
with
Judy
Siebert
afforded
students
the
opportunity
to
be
heard
by,
and
listen
to,
and
outstanding
pianist
and
teacher
who
continues
to
improve
her
own
musical
skills.
The
place
where
one
leaves
excellence
and
moves
into
the
sublime
may
be
found
at
Judy’s
fingertips.
Ever
respectful
of
the
student,
and
with
a
manner
that
left
each
feeling
good
about
themselves,
Judy
moved
from
the
technical
to
the
artistic
in
a
concise
yet
detailed
way.
Providing
a
“visual”
for
the
students,
she
told
them
to
“think
sideways,
not
up
and
down.”
Judy
used
analogies
to
explain
kinesthetic
aspects
of
playing
the
piano.
She
likened
pedaling
to
the
parents’
use
of
the
gas
pedal
when
driving.
A
variety
of
foot
action
produces
a
variety
of
results
–
some
of
the
“safer”
than
others.
In
order
to
produce
the
right
degree
of
detachment
in
a
staccato
section,
Judy
had
one
student
pretend
he
had
honey
on
his
fingers.
(Don’t
try
this
at
home!)
Students
left
edified
and
inspired.
