Background
Florida Power & Light’s (FP&L) new 2,400 MW combined cycle gas
turbine plant, West County Energy Center, would require 14,000 gpm of
softened water. Unfortunately, water supplies in the area were limited
and they would be required to instantaneously switch to brackish well
water from the Floridan Aquifer when surface water was not available.

Degremont Technologies Solution (See block diagram)
Degremont designed the System around its patented DensaDeg®
Clarifier/Thickener. The System needed to be compact and it needed
to be able to react to sudden changes in influent quality. Redundancy
was added by using two 100% capacity units. IDI also designed and
supplied the chemical feed systems (including silos for lime and soda
ash) as well as the solids dewatering system.

Customer Benefits
(120’ Diameter)
DensaDeg
In addition to meeting all of the required performance parameters, the
System provided the following additional benefits:
Extremely Compact –The DensaDeg will easily fit in the
space of one conventional clarifier (see side)
• Influent Variability – The DensaDeg is able to handle the extreme
variability of instant transfers between well and surface water.
• Dense Sludge – FP&L avoided the need for an additional thickener
unit because the DensaDeg generates sludge >15% solids.
