I EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The University Scholars Program served 245 students between Fall 2012 and Spring 2013, welcomed in a
new class of 56 freshmen, and graduated 42 students with a Bachelor’s degree. The program is designed to
retain students in college, assist with the various transitions they face, connect them to campus, and
graduate them in a timely manner. The scholars take on various leadership roles around campus, as well as
participate in internships and study abroad opportunities all which aide to in their overall collegiate
experience. The program takes pride in holding our students to high academic standards. Scholars must
take 15 hours each semester and receive a 3.0 semester grade point average (GPA). Their average Fall 2012
cumulative GPA was 3.45 and their Spring 2013 cumulative GPA was 3.48.
The Scholar program also acknowledges the importance of service learning and giving back to the
community. We were a recipient of a grant from the Cesar Chavez Foundation in the amount of $8,000. Our
largest event is our annual MLK Day of Service Event held on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. This year the
event had 700 volunteers working with twenty-one agencies around Brownsville. This event allows our
scholars to work together, learn from each other, and show the community they care.
II MISSION
The mission of the program is to retain and graduate scholars within four years of matriculation, help them
learn how to take advantage of campus resources, create service learning opportunities and connect them to
different aspects of campus life while providing an environment that supports their goals and promotes trust,
belonging and fellowship. The program targets local high school students in the top 10% of their graduating
class and is designed to meet the following modular objectives:





85% of the freshmen scholars will be retained
90% of sophomore scholars will be on track to graduate in 4 years
90% of junior scholars will participate in an internship/shadowing/study abroad activity
80% of senior scholars will achieve a Bachelor’s degree by the spring 2013 semester
As a whole, our scholar program will have an average GPA of 3.25 for both the fall and spring
semester
 As a whole, our scholar program will have 90% of the scholars will indicate they are extremely or
very satisfied with the program
University Scholars enables a well-rounded student experience to promote learning and engagement beyond
the classroom while requiring rigorous academic expectations that compels scholars to maintain momentum
toward timely degree completion.

IV STUDENT CHARACTERISTICS
The Scholars program, started in 2006, funds four separate cohorts of students each year as they progress
towards graduation. Once the cohort has reached the end of its fourth year it is considered complete. The
student demographic breakdown that follows will account for all students in the program from Fall 2012 to
Spring 2013 and provide a specific cohort breakdown of that characteristic.
A. Unduplicated Head Count
For the fiscal year 2012-2013 we served a total of 245 unduplicated students, 245 for the fall and 220 for
the spring semester. Our scholars are held to a high standard both inside and outside of the classroom and
are not automatically guaranteed continuation in our program. To continue they must meet our program
standards and upon completion of their bachelor’s degree they are no longer consider active in the program.
This accounts for the drop in numbers for the spring. For the fall semester, we will welcome our eighth cohort.

B. Student Level
The scholars program only allows undergraduates to maintain their eligibility status in the program. At the end
of the spring semester we did have three students who had applied and been accepted into a graduate
3|Page

program at UTB. One student graduated in three years and is currently working on a Masters in Education,
another student who was accepted into the Physics 4 plus 1 program, and the last one who will begin the
Masters in Bilingual Education program this Fall semester. At the end of the Spring 2013 semester, we have 3
graduate students enrolled at UTB, 190 undergraduates and 27 who graduated with a degree. We do not
serve dual enrollment students since you must have completed high school to be eligible to start the program
in the Fall semester.
C. Student Classification
While we track each of our students from the time they start with our program until program completion they
can start the program with college hours already under their belt due to dual enrollment or due to taking
classes during summer sessions. Due
to this the completed hours range
Completed Hours at end of Spring 2013
will differ from the cohort
classification. For instance they will

them classified as a junior.

seniors, and 64 students with 121
hours or more. Important to note is
that the one student who was classified as a freshmen will not continue with the program and the majority of
the students in the 121 plus category are from cohort 4, which is now considered complete, and cohort 5,
which are my seniors. There are 4 students from Cohort 6 which have over 121 hours so we will track them
closely this next year to see if we can graduate them in three years.
D. Status
Our scholars are required to take 15 hours each semester, in order to complete 30 credit hours at the end of
each academic year of classes toward the degree plan of their choice. Certain degree plans limit the amount
of hours a student can take and others have completed enough hours to leave minimal hours need for their last
semester prior to graduation.

For example, our education majors in the final semester only take the 6 hours of student teaching that are
needed for degree completion, thus making them a part-time student. The eight students who were not
enrolled in Spring 2013 from Cohort 4, graduated in December 2012. The two from Cohort 5 graduate in
December, finishing their bachelor’s five semesters after starting the program. The remaining four opted not to
continue their education at UTB.
E. Student Gender
The Scholars program for this fiscal year served 167 female students and 78 male students or around 68%
female and 32% male. The chart below show the gender breakdown by cohorts and the female to male split
has been consistent with each cohort. While our office makes an effort to reach out to both genders equally,
we are limited to recruit the students who are top ten percent of their class. As the cohorts progresses we are
losing an equal amount of both genders as the percentage loss are fairly average across the cohorts.

Overall the programs student population is 96% Hispanic, 3.33% White, and 0.7% Asian.
G. Student Age
Our scholar population serves students, who just graduated from high school, for four years. In terms of
student age we serve the traditional aged college student. All 245 students are between the ages of 18-25.
H. Financial Aid Recipients (Pell Grant Only)
Our scholars must apply for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) each March to maintain the
eligibly status in the program. We have 123 students who received the Pell Grant for Spring 2013. The

V DEPARTMENTAL SERVICES AND ACTIVITIES
MLK Day of Service
All scholars will be asked to participate in a scholar group service event that will be coordinated by our junior
and senior scholars. This event has proved to be extremely successful the past three years. Our scholars work
hard in the Fall semester to coordinate the entire event from the volunteers, to service projects, to the parking,
food, and event logistics. Our goal was to have 700 volunteers participate in our 3rd Annual MLK Day of
Service Event. We met our goal in having a little over 700 volunteers that day. We had 663 volunteers signin that morning, and when you include the agency volunteers who did not sign-in along, with staff volunteering
their time to help run the event, we had over 700 volunteers. All of our projects kicked off at 8:45am, with
volunteers arriving as early as 7:45am, and ending at 11:45am, with many staying for the afternoon
program, lunch, and fair. We estimate that 2,115 volunteer hours were completed that morning.

Approximately 5 acres were cleaned, cleared, and picked up
Action 4 News had us on their morning news show to promote the event
Approximately 2 miles of trails were cleared and cleared of trash
Great progress was made at the community garden to help sustain their efforts of healthy living
A few of the organizations told me that some of the volunteers at their project wished to help them
again throughout the semester
The children at Guadalupe Regional Middle School loved all of their science projects. Ms. Boyle wrote
a nice email stating that the students could not stop talking about all they learned that day. During
their breaks they would come back to the classroom to check on some of their projects.
The children at Longoria Elementary school received 155 free books, which the librarian told us has
never happened before at their school.
Over 100 bags of trash, leaves, and debris were collects at various project sites.
200 sabal palms were planted in a reforestation effort and 20 trees were planted at the Brownsville
Sports Park
Both the keynote speaker and the faculty who won the service award gave moving speeches to
encourage the group to continue to serve others
Over 200 middle school and elementary school students were led by college students on various
projects as well as hearing from them the importance of attending an institution of higher education
and what exciting things are students are doing during their time here

University Scholar Graduation Recognition
At the end of each semester we recognize those scholars who are graduating and have maintained
good standing in our program. The event is simple yet we have learned that the students
appreciated being honored and recognized for their accomplishments. Family, friends, staff, and
faculty members who are close to the graduating scholar are welcome to attend. It is an
opportunity for us to thank them for the work over the years, wish them well in their future, and
provide them with their graduation stole which they will wear at commencement. This year we
honored 44 graduates.
Program’s August Meeting
In August each year we host our annual scholar meeting. Here we meet separately with each cohort to
provide them with the needed information for the coming year; program requirements, updates to the
program, and we update our contact information. These meetings serve as a welcome back and another
opportunity for us to meet the students. Our program feels this connection is crucial to their continued success
at our university. For the freshmen and sophomores it allows us the opportunity to have them meet their mentor
who they will be paired with during the upcoming year.
Peer Mentoring
First year University Scholars are required to meet with their assigned Scholar Peer Mentor once a month, for
the first three months of the fall and spring semesters. Scholars will establish a working personal trusting
relationship with their mentor, who will guide them through their first year in college. Mentor/mentee pairings
will be assigned by the program advisor.
In their second year as a scholar, the student will become a peer mentor to an incoming first year scholar. This
will help reinforce their learning experience and help them understand the relationship between being
successful in college and helping others. Each scholar mentor and mentee will submit a contact log form to
document their meetings.
University Scholar Student Advisors Sessions
Our office has two part-time student advisors who will be available to meet and answer any questions that
the student scholar might have. They will meet with students to discuss progress toward graduation, academic
progress, career exploration and development. Scholars are required to meet with either the program
advisor or the student advisor during the semester. Their year in the program determines how often they must
meet. First year students will meet three times each semester during their first year. Second year student will
meet two times each semester during the year. Third and fourth year students will meet once a semester
during the year.
Faculty Mentoring
Once a student is in their junior and senior year (3rd and 4th year of the program) they are required to meet
with a faculty mentor twice a semester until they graduate. The purpose of the meeting is to help the student
with internships, graduate school, and career guidance. The scholar is the one who identifies the faculty mentor
they would like to meet with.
Online Modules – Academic Success, Leadership, and Engagement
During the first year, our scholars will be asked to complete academic success and leadership modules. These
modules are created to host and engage learning on topics important to academic and personal success,
7|Page
UTB - University Scholars Program
leadership, graduation, and the transition to college life. At the end of each module, the students complete an
activity, which they will submit to receive credit for the module. The purpose of these modules is to ensure that
students adjust adequately to the challenges college life will provide.

UTB Events
Our program research has shown that students who are involved in student activities, events and organizations
tend to do better academically, graduate in a timely manner, and adjust better socially to the campus
environment. Our program strongly supports this ideal and enforces it by having our scholars participate in
the many diverse campus life events our university provides. Our events provide stress free relaxation from
academic work and opportunities to build relationships with students, faculty and staff. Scholars will attend a
set number of events depending on program classification. Events must be hosted by a UTB department.
Students must fill out an activity log form, signed by a person who is running the event, and turn it in as
evidence of attendance. All activities must be completed before finals week.
Career Exploration
Scholars in their first year of the program will complete the Choices Career Inventory, and scholars in their
second year will complete the StrengthsQuest. They will be asked to meet with a career counselor and
complete a Career Inventory/StrengthsQuest reflection in an effort to help them along their career path.
Junior and senior scholars will be asked to meet with a Career Service Specialist for a mock interview, resume
development and will be required to attend a UTB job fair. Scholars will be asked to submit their resume,
along with applying for either an internship, graduate school, or a full-time position.
Degree Plan
All students must turn in an updated copy of their degree plan at the end of every semester. This will allow us
to track their progress towards graduation.
On-Track-To-Graduate
During their second year in the program, the scholars will be asked to submit the On-Track-To-Graduation
form. This allows both the scholar and our program see the classes needed to graduate in four years.
Progress Reports
First and second year scholars must turn in a Mid-Semester Progress Report by each semester for the first two

years. These progress reports act as an early alert system for our program and allow us to reach out to
students who appear to be struggling in their classes.

Objective Status: Not Met - In Fall
2012 we started with 72 scholars.
For Fall 2013 60 of them are
active in the program.
We had a program retention rate of
83.3%, falling short of our goal by 2%
points, or 1 student short. We will
reevaluate our program requirements to
see if additional changes could account
for an increased retention rate.
Objective Status: Met – We
currently have 77, or 92%,
students who are on track to
graduate on or before Spring
2016.
We will continue to monitor our student’s
progress towards degree completion as
we see that it is beneficial to our
students to help them understand what it
will take to finish in 4 years.
June 2013 – In the same excel

Objective Status: Not Met – After
review of the documents we did not
meet this goal. We know that many
of our students did participate but
our method of collecting
information did not work as we
thought. Since our data collection
didn’t work, we were unable to
collect data.
We will continue to promote this as a
requirement as we see that it is
beneficial to our students. Our
department will work on a delivery
method that will help us
Objective Status: Not Met – We
had 30 Scholars receive a
bachelor degree by May 2013,
for a 76.9% graduation rate.
We will continue to work with our
students from the moment they start with
our program to ensure they make wise
choices in selecting their major, are
informed when they change their major,
and they select courses that will keep
them on track to graduate.

UTB - University Scholars Program
X STUDENT TESTIMONIALS
After making the decision to attend UTB, I decided to apply and become a
University Scholar. I knew becoming a University Scholar would provide me a
unique perspective of what I can do to transform myself. Not only did I know that
the Scholars would provide financial stability to achieve the goals I have long
been waiting for, but also, a greater sense of professionalism and responsibility.
Alexis Longoria, Nursing C/O 2017
Being a University Scholar will pave the way into a brighter future. It has made
me break out of my shell and I know that this program will give me the tools
necessary not only to become an extraordinary professional but also a part of
my community. This program is for people that want to go beyond the classroom
and truly do something with their education and degree. This program is not just
a group but rather a family. Leonardo Rodriguez, Exercise Science C/O 2017
The past 3 years have been challenging but I stand today a semester away from
graduation all thanks to The University Scholars Program. The program goes far
beyond financial assistance, being a university scholar offered me academic and
social opportunities I never dreamed I would have. I am thankful to have been
welcomed into a family who supported and help me grow as an individual.
