The program is designed to retain students in college, assist with the various transitions they face, connect them to campus, and graduate them in a timely manner. The scholars take on various leadership roles around campus, as well as participate in internships and study abroad opportunities all which aide to in their overall collegiate experience. The program takes pride in holding our students to high academic standards. Scholars must take 15 hours each semester and receive a 3.0 semester grade point average (GPA). Their average Fall 2012 cumulative GPA was 3.45 and their Spring 2013 cumulative GPA was 3.48. The Scholar program also acknowledges the importance of service learning and giving back to the community. We were a recipient of a grant from the Cesar Chavez Foundation in the amount of $8,000. Our largest event is our annual MLK Day of Service Event held on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. This year the event had 700 volunteers working with twenty-one agencies around Brownsville. This event allows our scholars to work together, learn from each other, and show the community they care. II MISSION The mission of the program is to retain and graduate scholars within four years of matriculation, help them learn how to take advantage of campus resources, create service learning opportunities and connect them to different aspects of campus life while providing an environment that supports their goals and promotes trust, belonging and fellowship. The program targets local high school students in the top 10% of their graduating class and is designed to meet the following modular objectives: 85% of the freshmen scholars will be retained 90% of sophomore scholars will be on track to graduate in 4 years 90% of junior scholars will participate in an internship/shadowing/study abroad activity 80% of senior scholars will achieve a Bachelor’s degree by the spring 2013 semester As a whole, our scholar program will have an average GPA of 3.25 for both the fall and spring semester As a whole, our scholar program will have 90% of the scholars will indicate they are extremely or very satisfied with the program University Scholars enables a well-rounded student experience to promote learning and engagement beyond the classroom while requiring rigorous academic expectations that compels scholars to maintain momentum toward timely degree completion. 2|Page UTB - University Scholars Program III DEPARTMENT HIGHLIGHTS The following items represent a snapshot of the key accomplishments of the program for the year: In Spring 2013, our fourth cohort of graduates walked the stage, for a 44% four year graduation rate To date, we have graduated a total of 179 students with a bachelor’s degree in four years, and overall we have graduated a total of 225 with a bachelor’s degree, for an program graduation rate of 57% We had 42 students who received a bachelor’s degree o 1 will be pursing his Doctorate of Physical Therapy, 1 will be starting a PhD program in Rehabilitation Counseling, 1 will attending Law School, 16 who plan to pursue their masters, and 23 who plan to enter the workforce The scholars program received a $8,000 grant from the Cesar Chavez Foundation to help with the MLK Day of Service Event Hosted the 3rd Annual Martin Luther King Day of Service Event were we had 21 projects, over 700 volunteers, and over 2,115 volunteer hours logged that day Welcomed 56 new scholars into the program in May 2013 to start in Fall 2013 We had 21 of students receive a 4.0 semester GPA this Fall and 23 receive a 4.0 semester GPA this Spring IV STUDENT CHARACTERISTICS The Scholars program, started in 2006, funds four separate cohorts of students each year as they progress towards graduation. Once the cohort has reached the end of its fourth year it is considered complete. The student demographic breakdown that follows will account for all students in the program from Fall 2012 to Spring 2013 and provide a specific cohort breakdown of that characteristic. A. Unduplicated Head Count For the fiscal year 2012-2013 we served a total of 245 unduplicated students, 245 for the fall and 220 for the spring semester. Our scholars are held to a high standard both inside and outside of the classroom and are not automatically guaranteed continuation in our program. To continue they must meet our program standards and upon completion of their bachelor’s degree they are no longer consider active in the program. This accounts for the drop in numbers for the spring. For the fall semester, we will welcome our eighth cohort. Student Level The scholars program only allows undergraduates to maintain their eligibility status in the program. At the end of the spring semester we did have three students who had applied and been accepted into a graduate 3|Page UTB - University Scholars Program program at UTB. One student graduated in three years and is currently working on a Masters in Education, another student who was accepted into the Physics 4 plus 1 program, and the last one who will begin the Masters in Bilingual Education program this Fall semester. At the end of the Spring 2013 semester, we have 3 graduate students enrolled at UTB, 190 undergraduates and 27 who graduated with a degree. We do not serve dual enrollment students since you must have completed high school to be eligible to start the program in the Fall semester. C. Student Classification While we track each of our students from the time they start with our program until program completion they can start the program with college hours already under their belt due to dual enrollment or due to taking classes during summer sessions. Due to this the completed hours range Completed Hours at end of Spring 2013 will differ from the cohort classification. Important to note is that the one student who was classified as a freshmen will not continue with the program and the majority of the students in the 121 plus category are from cohort 4, which is now considered complete, and cohort 5, which are my seniors. There are 4 students from Cohort 6 which have over 121 hours so we will track them closely this next year to see if we can graduate them in three years. D. Status Our scholars are required to take 15 hours each semester, in order to complete 30 credit hours at the end of each academic year of classes toward the degree plan of their choice. Certain degree plans limit the amount of hours a student can take and others have completed enough hours to leave minimal hours need for their last semester prior to graduation. The eight students who were not enrolled in Spring 2013 from Cohort 4, graduated in December 2012. The two from Cohort 5 graduate in December, finishing their bachelor’s five semesters after starting the program. The remaining four opted not to continue their education at UTB. E. Student Gender The Scholars program for this fiscal year served 167 female students and 78 male students or around 68% female and 32% male. The chart below show the gender breakdown by cohorts and the female to male split has been consistent with each cohort. While our office makes an effort to reach out to both genders equally, we are limited to recruit the students who are top ten percent of their class. As the cohorts progresses we are losing an equal amount of both genders as the percentage loss are fairly average across the cohorts. Student Ethnicity Overall the programs student population is 96% Hispanic, 3.33% White, and 0.7% Asian. G. Student Age Our scholar population serves students, who just graduated from high school, for four years. In terms of student age we serve the traditional aged college student. All 245 students are between the ages of 18-25. H. Financial Aid Recipients (Pell Grant Only) Our scholars must apply for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) each March to maintain the eligibly status in the program. We have 123 students who received the Pell Grant for Spring 2013. The table below illustrates the break down by cohort. This event has proved to be extremely successful the past three years. Our scholars work hard in the Fall semester to coordinate the entire event from the volunteers, to service projects, to the parking, food, and event logistics. Our goal was to have 700 volunteers participate in our 3rd Annual MLK Day of Service Event. We met our goal in having a little over 700 volunteers that day. We had 663 volunteers signin that morning, and when you include the agency volunteers who did not sign-in along, with staff volunteering their time to help run the event, we had over 700 volunteers. All of our projects kicked off at 8:45am, with volunteers arriving as early as 7:45am, and ending at 11:45am, with many staying for the afternoon program, lunch, and fair. We estimate that 2,115 volunteer hours were completed that morning. We had over 700 volunteers come out and support our cause There were 6 different media sources that covered our event 2,115 volunteer hours completed that morning 21 separate projects worked on Recipient of a $8,000 grant from the Cesar Chavez Foundation Approximately 5 acres were cleaned, cleared, and picked up Action 4 News had us on their morning news show to promote the event Approximately 2 miles of trails were cleared and cleared of trash Great progress was made at the community garden to help sustain their efforts of healthy living A few of the organizations told me that some of the volunteers at their project wished to help them again throughout the semester The children at Guadalupe Regional Middle School loved all of their science projects. Ms. Boyle wrote a nice email stating that the students could not stop talking about all they learned that day. During their breaks they would come back to the classroom to check on some of their projects. The children at Longoria Elementary school received 155 free books, which the librarian told us has never happened before at their school. Over 100 bags of trash, leaves, and debris were collects at various project sites. 200 sabal palms were planted in a reforestation effort and 20 trees were planted at the Brownsville Sports Park Both the keynote speaker and the faculty who won the service award gave moving speeches to encourage the group to continue to serve others Over 200 middle school and elementary school students were led by college students on various projects as well as hearing from them the importance of attending an institution of higher education and what exciting things are students are doing during their time here University Scholar Program Orientation Pending – Will be coordinated with CAMP, GTF, and ASPIRE on August 1 -3. 6|Page UTB - University Scholars Program University Scholar Graduation Recognition At the end of each semester we recognize those scholars who are graduating and have maintained good standing in our program. The event is simple yet we have learned that the students appreciated being honored and recognized for their accomplishments. Family, friends, staff, and faculty members who are close to the graduating scholar are welcome to attend. It is an opportunity for us to thank them for the work over the years, wish them well in their future, and provide them with their graduation stole which they will wear at commencement. This year we honored 44 graduates. Program’s August Meeting In August each year we host our annual scholar meeting. Here we meet separately with each cohort to provide them with the needed information for the coming year; program requirements, updates to the program, and we update our contact information. These meetings serve as a welcome back and another opportunity for us to meet the students. Our program feels this connection is crucial to their continued success at our university. For the freshmen and sophomores it allows us the opportunity to have them meet their mentor who they will be paired with during the upcoming year. Peer Mentoring First year University Scholars are required to meet with their assigned Scholar Peer Mentor once a month, for the first three months of the fall and spring semesters. Scholars will establish a working personal trusting relationship with their mentor, who will guide them through their first year in college. Mentor/mentee pairings will be assigned by the program advisor. In their second year as a scholar, the student will become a peer mentor to an incoming first year scholar. This will help reinforce their learning experience and help them understand the relationship between being successful in college and helping others. Each scholar mentor and mentee will submit a contact log form to document their meetings. University Scholar Student Advisors Sessions Our office has two part-time student advisors who will be available to meet and answer any questions that the student scholar might have. They will meet with students to discuss progress toward graduation, academic progress, career exploration and development. Scholars are required to meet with either the program advisor or the student advisor during the semester. Their year in the program determines how often they must meet. First year students will meet three times each semester during their first year. Second year student will meet two times each semester during the year. Third and fourth year students will meet once a semester during the year. Faculty Mentoring Once a student is in their junior and senior year (3rd and 4th year of the program) they are required to meet with a faculty mentor twice a semester until they graduate. The purpose of the meeting is to help the student with internships, graduate school, and career guidance. The scholar is the one who identifies the faculty mentor they would like to meet with. Online Modules – Academic Success, Leadership, and Engagement During the first year, our scholars will be asked to complete academic success and leadership modules. These modules are created to host and engage learning on topics important to academic and personal success, 7|Page UTB - University Scholars Program leadership, graduation, and the transition to college life. At the end of each module, the students complete an activity, which they will submit to receive credit for the module. The purpose of these modules is to ensure that students adjust adequately to the challenges college life will provide. How to Research Preparing for Graduation: Freshman Year Getting Involved Leadership Traits Internships/Study Abroad Leadership Conferences Research on Major UTB Events Our program research has shown that students who are involved in student activities, events and organizations tend to do better academically, graduate in a timely manner, and adjust better socially to the campus environment. Our program strongly supports this ideal and enforces it by having our scholars participate in the many diverse campus life events our university provides. Our events provide stress free relaxation from academic work and opportunities to build relationships with students, faculty and staff. Scholars will attend a set number of events depending on program classification. Events must be hosted by a UTB department. Students must fill out an activity log form, signed by a person who is running the event, and turn it in as evidence of attendance. All activities must be completed before finals week. Career Exploration Scholars in their first year of the program will complete the Choices Career Inventory, and scholars in their second year will complete the StrengthsQuest. They will be asked to meet with a career counselor and complete a Career Inventory/StrengthsQuest reflection in an effort to help them along their career path. Junior and senior scholars will be asked to meet with a Career Service Specialist for a mock interview, resume development and will be required to attend a UTB job fair. Scholars will be asked to submit their resume, along with applying for either an internship, graduate school, or a full-time position. Degree Plan All students must turn in an updated copy of their degree plan at the end of every semester. This will allow us to track their progress towards graduation. On-Track-To-Graduate During their second year in the program, the scholars will be asked to submit the On-Track-To-Graduation form. This allows both the scholar and our program see the classes needed to graduate in four years. Progress Reports First and second year scholars must turn in a Mid-Semester Progress Report by each semester for the first two 8|Page UTB - University Scholars Program years. Describe action plan for continued improvement ESO 1: That 85%, or 61 of the 72 freshmen scholars, who start with the university scholars program in Fall 2012 will continue in the program for Fall 2013. January 2013 – In a excel spreadsheet compare the Fall 2012 active scholars to the Spring 2013 active scholars. Objective Status: Not Met - In Fall 2012 we started with 72 scholars. For Fall 2013 60 of them are active in the program. We had a program retention rate of 83.3%, falling short of our goal by 2% points, or 1 student short. We will reevaluate our program requirements to see if additional changes could account for an increased retention rate. Objective Status: Met – We currently have 77, or 92%, students who are on track to graduate on or before Spring 2016. We will continue to monitor our student’s progress towards degree completion as we see that it is beneficial to our students to help them understand what it will take to finish in 4 years. June 2013 – In the same excel spreadsheet create another column for Fall 2013 and cross compare with Fall 2012’s active scholars September 2013 (by ORD) – Using the created excel spreadsheet, determine the final percentage of active scholars who persisted within the program. ESO 2: By August 31, 2013 the scholars program will have 90%, or 76 of the 84 sophomore scholar’s show, through the submission of an on-track-to-graduation form, that they can complete their degree requirements within four years. December 2012 – Have all scholars submit their on-track-to-graduation form February 2013 – Review to ensure all active scholars have submitted their form, contact those who have not yet submitted their forms March 2013 – Print all degree plans and semester-by-semester plans April 2013 – Using all three documents, compare completed courses with those courses still needed. ESO 3: To have 90%, or 45 of the 50 junior scholars participate in an internship/shadowing/study abroad activity or be accepted to graduate school/full-time job that is related to their future career plans by August 31, 2013. Fall 2012 – Talk with students about their participation in the above activities March 2013 – Email assessment document with questions to the students April 2013 – Follow up with the scholars during their required scholar meeting about their participation in the above activity Objective Status: Not Met – After review of the documents we did not meet this goal. We know that many of our students did participate but our method of collecting information did not work as we thought. Since our data collection didn’t work, we were unable to collect data. We will continue to promote this as a requirement as we see that it is beneficial to our students. Our department will work on a delivery method that will help us Objective Status: Not Met – We had 30 Scholars receive a bachelor degree by May 2013, for a 76.9% graduation rate. We will continue to work with our students from the moment they start with our program to ensure they make wise choices in selecting their major, are informed when they change their major, and they select courses that will keep them on track to graduate. May 2013: The inventory log will be submitted to the scholars office.
