MURRIETA VALLEY UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT BOARD OF EDUCATION REGULAR MEETING MINUTES September 11, 2014 Call to Order President Thomasian called the regular meeting of the Board of Education to order at 5:45 p.m. at the Murrieta Valley Unified School District Support Center, 41870 McAlby Court, Murrieta, California. Quorum A quorum was established with the following Board Members present: Robin Crist, Kenneth Dickson, Paul Diffley, Barbara Muir, Kris Thomasian and Patrick Kelley, Superintendent/Secretary to the Board. Member absent: None Public Comments None. Closed Session The Board met in Closed Session from 5:45 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. to discuss the following items: Public Session / Report Out of Closed Session CS-1 Conference regarding existing litigation pursuant to Government Code 54956.9 CS-2 Conference with Labor Negotiators pursuant to Government Code 54957.6 Agency designated representatives: Pat Kelley, Stacy Coleman and Pamela Wilson President Thomasian reconvened the meeting into public session at 7:05 p.m. She announced that a quorum was present with all members of the Board in attendance and reported that the meeting was being audio recorded. President Thomasian reported that the Board met in Closed Session to conference regarding existing litigation and met with labor negotiators. She announced that no actions were taken in Closed Session. Regular Meeting Minutes – September 11, 2014 Page 1 of 14 A-7: Approval of Agenda President Thomasian asked for a motion to amend and approve the agenda as follows: Remove Agenda Items: D-2 First Reading of Proposed Revision to Board Policy and Administrative Regulation: BP & AR 5116.1, Intradistrict Open Enrollment D-4 First Reading of Proposed Revision to Board Policy: BP 5111.1, District Residency D-5 First Reading of Proposed New Administrative Regulation: AR 5111.1, District Residency Motion by DIFFLEY, second by DICKSON, to approve the agenda as amended. Public Comments The Board received public comments from parents Zina Runyan, Tamiko Houar, Christine Jones, and Rebecca Baak expressing concerns regarding Common Core State Standards. b. Introduction of High School Student Representatives to the Board for the 2014/15 School Year Murrieta Valley High School Principal, Eric Mooney, introduced Keerat Kaur. Keerat highlighted student activities and upcoming events at Murrieta Valley High School. Murrieta Mesa High School Principal, Steve Ellis, introduced Ashton Farrar. Ashton highlighted student activities and upcoming events at Murrieta Mesa High School. Vista Murrieta High School Principal, Mick Wager, introduced Michael White. Michael highlighted student activities and upcoming events at Vista Murrieta High School. Creekside High School Principal, Jared Roger, introduced Katherine Petersen. Katherine highlighted student activities and upcoming events at Vista Murrieta High School. c. Employee Organization Communications Kathy Ericson, President of the Murrieta Teachers Association reported that teachers are working long hours and have a lot on their plates. Superintendent Communication Superintendent Patrick Kelley announced that the Board Workshop on September 25 will highlight signature high school programs. He thanked teachers for working hard to improve student learning and said that Murrieta is unique in that it utilizes teacher leaders as curriculum designers. He thanked the Classified staff for getting the school year off to a great start and highlighted the Technology staff who works behind the scenes ensuring that computers are functioning properly. He expressed his appreciation to Ken Dickson and Paul Diffley for serving on Educational Technology Advisory Committee. Mr. Kelley reflected on the importance of school ceremonies held today in remembrance of the 9/11 tragedy. e. Board Communications Trustee Paul Diffley expressed concern regarding the elimination of high school life science and beginning math courses. He reported visiting engineering and art classrooms at Murrieta Valley High School. He urged community members to support the district’s November Ballot Measure BB which would upgrade outdated classroom technology and instructional facilities. Trustee Robin Crist thanked Mr. Diffley and Mr. Dickson for serving on the Education Technology Advisory Committee. She praised school sites on their 9/11 school ceremonies. She thanked the student representatives for their thorough reports. Trustee Barbara Muir thanked the new student representatives, teachers and classified staff. Trustee Ken Dickson reported on a great start to the school year. He said that the student representatives were well prepared with comprehensive reports. He shared that he was privileged to be part of the 9/11 remembrance ceremony at Vista Murrieta High School. Trustee Kris Thomasian expressed her appreciation to teachers and staff for working so hard inspiring students to grow. She reported training nine new volunteers for the Home-to-School program at Monte Vista Elementary. She thanked the Special Education Parent Advisory Committee comprised of parent volunteers that organize trainings and workshops throughout the school year.
