FRENCH IMMERSION IS A K-8 PROGRAM Upon completion of the program, students are: • Completely fluent in French and can maturely express themselves in speaking and in writing • Able to converse and share information with evidence about the Francophone world • Able to make connections and build relationships with other citizens of the Francophone world THE MIDDLE YEARS Students in the Middle Years phase of the program work on: Expanding their vocabulary Revising grammatical structures Practicing extensive reading and writing Learning about and experiencing the francophone culture Becoming global citizens through exploration of World History ADDITIONAL BENEFITS OF THE MIDDLE YEARS • Superb critical thinking and problem solving skills • Confidence, self motivation, challenge and personal responsibility of education • Advanced high-school credit classes in Middle School (above intro-level language course) • Excellent preparation for the rigor of honors and AP courses and magnet programs in high school • Advanced proficiency in French • Excellent linguistic abilities and understanding of language in both French and secondary languages Philosophy of the French Immersion Program The main difference between an immersion setting and a foreign language class is the approach to second language learning. In an immersion program, language is a method for teaching the content rather than the subject of instruction Partial immersion programs are based on this principle with a portion of the curriculum taught in the second language. MIDDLE SCHOOL FRENCH IMMERSION Middle School Immersion is Partial Immersion: French Language and Literature Social Studies in French French Immersion at Gaithersburg Middle School French Immersion Language Arts: Two county semester exams: January and June Grade 6: French 1A and 1B Grade 7: French 2A and 2B Grade 8: French 3A and 3B Social Studies: Document Based Assessment in 8 th Grade as part of final evaluation FRENCH IMMERSION 6 TH GRADE UNITS OF STUDY SOCIAL STUDIES 6 TH GRADE UNITS OF STUDY 1st Marking Period- Patterns of Settlement in the Ancient and Modern Worlds 2nd Marking Period- Citizenship and Governance in Classical and Modern Times 3rd Marking Period- The Impact of Economics: Change and Continuity in China 4th Marking Period- Cultural Systems Past and Present LE GRAND CONCOURS AT GAITHERSBURG MIDDLE SCHOOL Many of the top 20 students from the MD Chapter of the National French contest come from Gaithersburg Middle School GMS has been awarded with gold placement both statewide and nationally All GMS participants of the contest received an award! GMS has tradition of scoring in the top 10% nationwide! Last year, we had a perfect score! We look forward to having your child be part of next year’s GOLD WINNERS! The Notice of Intent form will be mailed home on February 5, 2016. Forms must be returned to the DCCAPS office at 11721 Kemp Mill Road, Silver Spring, Maryland 20902. • Deadline to return this form is by February 26, 2016 as this information helps inform the school of staffing and resource needs for the upcoming year. The registration process will be initiated through Maryvale REGISTRATION Gaithersburg Middle School is your child’s Middle School for continuation of French Immersion • February 11, 2016-GMS Articulation night 7:00 Pm • February 17, 2016-Visit to Maryvale ES to talk to students about GMS and scheduling. • Deadline to return this form is by February 19, 2016 REGISTRATION TRANSPORTATION Central stops are placed at MCPS schools and other government facilities. Not all students will have a bus stop within walking distance of their home. Parents are responsible for getting students to and from the central stops that will be posted on the GMS website in August 2016.
