Dr. Dorothea Fuller, Principal
Nichola Wallen, Assistant Principal
Our Vision: Galway Elementary School will empower students
to be valued, productive members of a global society.
The Galway Pledge : We pledge to respect one
another, to be trustworthy and fair. We will care
about each other, and be good citizens. Above
all else, I will take responsibility for my actions,
in a quest to build a better you…and a better
me.
Principally Speaking: Thoughts on Staff Appreciation Week
I want to thank all of the parents and the Galway PTA for making our staff feel appreciated and loved. I especially want to thank Ms. Greene for her dedication in
setting up breakfast and lunch for the staff everyday. You made us feel so special.
I hope this poem reflects the relationship the Galway staff wants to have with our
parents and students.
Partnership
They bring their child to me
And hope I'll come to know
How much the offspring means to them,
Their trust in me bestowed.
They bring their child to me
With love and hope and pride,
Looking for a helping hand,
A teacher who will guide
They bring their child to me,
And our partnership is clear:
To nurture and allow to bloom
A life we both hold dear.
They bring their child to me,
A step toward letting go
And trusting in our special plan
To help the child grow.
By Gloria Weber Henbess
Teachers affect eternity; no one can tell where their influence stops.

Attention Parents and Guardians…
As we near the end the of the school year, it is time to make sure that the school office has your correct address
and phone number in the MCPS database. This is very important since your child’s final report card will not be sent
home on the last day of school, but will be mailed to your home. If we do not have the correct address, your child’s
report card will be returned to the school. Please take a moment to update this information if it has changed since
the beginning of the school year and return this to the school office.

 INTELLECTUAL RISK TAKING - Accepting uncertainty or
challenging the norm to reach a goal
READING: Students will begin exploring literary nonf iction by reading
autobiographies, biographies, and memoirs. Students will summarize text

and contrast f irst and secondhand accounts, and explain how an author
uses reasons and evidence to support particular points. Students will
integrate inf ormation f rom two literary nonf iction texts, pose and

surf ace over time
MATH: Students extend understandings about f ractions to represent

a f raction with denominator 10 as an equivalent f raction with
denominator 100 and use the strategy to add two f ractions with
denominators 10 and 100 as well as to add decimals to hundredths.
Students compare decimals to hundredths by reasoning about their size

Spotlight on Academics
Math is very busy and diverse this quarter! We
are applying multiplication strategies and place
value reasoning to multiply and divide decimals.
We will teach these concepts through the use of
word problems and reasoning. We will tie these
skills in with measurement in the customary and
metric systems. We will end the marking period
with coordinate graphing, geometry, and algebra!
**Please continue studying math facts at home!!!
In science, we will study cells and heredity by
examining the characteristics of plant and animal
cells using microscopes. We will also compare the
characteristics of unicellular and multi-cellular
organisms. Health instruction on Family Life and
Human Sexuality will occur in May. Please submit
the permission form if you have not done so,
instruction begins May 25th.
In social studies, our focus is on economics. We
will examine ways to be financially literate and to
apply financial decision making (spending, saving,
& sharing).
In reading we will analyze author’s point of view
find relationships among individual and events.
We will use inferencing strategies to analyze
elements of plays. Please continue to stress the
importance of reading at home for at least 30
minutes and send in completed book logs!
In writing, the students will focus on researching
a career and, based on their research, determine
if they feel the career will still be relevant in the
future. We will end the year with writing a speech
that shares memories and important lessons from
elementary school. One speech from each class
will be selected and used at this year’s promotion
ceremony!
