Celebrating Excellence on the HR Day
ongratulations to those who
received the Service Excellence
Awards this semester. The award is
designed to recognize services beyond
the normal expectations of the job or
significant innovations. The aim of
the awards is to recognize outstanding
performers who set the standards of
excellence for other staff members.
This year, the administration recognized three types of outstanding performances: exceptional service, innovations, and team work. The innovation award recognizes the efforts to
create new procedure, program or to
modify a piece of equipment that
would allow a better and more efficient work process. The Team work
award aims at recognizing group
efforts of teams who demonstrate
inter-departmental collaboration.
This year 15 staff members were
selected to receive the Award for
Outstanding Services or Innovation.
Selection was made based on written
recommendations from students, faculty, and fellow staff members. The
awardees were recognized in the
Human Resources Day by senior
administration. The excellence

award for innovations he made that
helped both Chemistry and Physics
departments. Mr. Shehta Tolba,
Buildings & Grounds who was recognized for his outstanding services.
Two teams received the Service and
Innovation award; the Strategic
Marketing & Communication team
was recognized for the major redesign
of key AUC publications. The English
Language Institute team was recognized for their significant work in digitizing the materials used in ELI
courses. As the champion of the
Excellence Award Program, VP
Darling was also awarded for his support to all the HR issues pertaining to
AUC staff members.

The Training Center Hosts New Workshops
uring the month of May the
Training Center held three workshops for the AUC’s Assistant to’s, that
complimented
the
"Office
Management Certification" held in
2002. The three workshops were
Personal Accountability, Time &
Stress Management, and Creative
Thinking Strategies. The workshops
were facilitated by Mr. Alaa El
Halwagy, Vice President of Innovative
Group, Florida, USA and co-facilitated by Ms. Maram Beheiry, Associate
of Innovative Group and Speaker of
the Year for Florida State.
The Personal Accountability workshop discussed issues pertaining to
ethics and integrity in work and per-
D
sonal life. Mr. El Halwagy stressed
the importance of personal accountablitlity for the choices that people
make. He explained that the person
should focus on what he/she can do to
change things around him rather than
blaming others for their own wrong
doings. The Time and Stress
Management workshop focused on
how people manage the different
events in their lives. Mr. El Halwagy
said that time is a constant factor that
one can not manage; it is events that
people can manage and control. Ms.
Beheiry said that the key to stress
management is to plan ahead of the
event and do not delay things to the
last moment. Participants were
engaged in relaxing and stretching
exercises that helps in relieving
stress. The third workshop, Creative
Thinking Strategies, helped participants think outside the box by engaging them in a series of interactive
excercises.

Human Resources Day
he Human Resources office celebrated the HR Day on May 4,
2004. The event celebrated the
anniversaries of 129 staff members
who have dedicated long years of their
lives for the service of AUC. The ceremony was attended by staff, faculty,
and senior administration who gathered in honor of their colleagues.
Service awardees received their gifts
and certificates from their Area
Heads.
The ceremony was inaugurated by the
words of President Arnold and Ms.
Mushira El Bardai, Human Resources
Director. In his speech, President
Arnold shared with the audience his
views on the future of AUC and the
challenges that lay ahead of us. Ms.
Mushira El Bardai stressed the importance of maintaining AUC s leading
position among the local and worldwide universities. Hand in hand, we
can extend quality service to our
clients- the internal as well as the
external ones, and thus maintain our
success and continue to develop in
steady steps , she said. Ms. El Bardai

Provost Tim Sullivan was among the
awardees for 30 years of service
emphasized that quality is two
dimensional; professional excellence
which is the development of skills and
integrity which pertains to maintaining ethics and good behavior.
Among the awardees for this year
were: Ms. Shahira El Sawy, Dean of
Libraries & Learning Technologies
(40 years), Dr. Earl (Tim) Sullivan,
Provost (30 years), and Dr. Amr
Mortagy, Dean of School of Business,
President Arnold during his speech
Ms. Dalia Issa, Student Cultural
Activities Manager who performed
Arabic classical songs that were fit for
the occasion.
On this occasion, the Human
Resources Office would like to extend
its warm wishes to all service and
excellence awardees.

Economics, and Communication (30
years). As the event celebrated loyalty
and dedication, the services of two
deceased staff members: Mr. Raafat
Wahib, and Ms. Suad Abdel Fattah
was recognized and their awards were
given to their son and daughter. We
can not forget those who served AUC
even if they were not with us today ,
Ms. El Bardai said.
On the event, Mr. Alexander Darling,
VP for Planning & Administration
announced the winners of the Service
Excellence & Innovation Awards for
this semester. Finally, the ceremony
concluded with the performance of
Ms. Dalia Issa performing on the HR
