Fariborz (Fred) Mokhtari, Ph.D. Interest Dr. Mokhtari joined the faculty of the Near East South Asia Center for Strategic Studies (NESA), National Defense University (NDU) in September 2002. His interests have included modern Iran and the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Regional Security, Foreign Policy, International Relations and Good Governance. His approach to teaching and research has been cross regional, interdisciplinary, and cross-cultural. He has studied security perceptions and policies of Iran, Israel, Turkey, the neighboring Arab states, and participated at track-II conferences on the Middle East since 2003. At NESA he has served as faculty member and policy advisor to the national policymaking community, prepared, coordinated, facilitated and conducted seminars and workshops on strategic, operational, national and international security issues for senior U.S. and foreign participants including flag officers and ambassadorial rank.. Professor Mokhtari taught at Norwich University in Vermont from 1983 to 2002, and instituted in 1996 a graduate program with a Distance Learning option for security professionals worldwide. He has conducted research in Turkey, Jordan, Israel, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Greece, Germany, France, and Sweden. Additionally, he has visited Chile, Russia, Mongolia, Indonesia, Singapore, Korea and Thailand. His latest research project took him to the Middle East in May and June 2010 seeking an inclusive regional security arrangement. His recent book In the Lion’s Shadow: The Iranian Schindler and his Homeland in the Second World War (London: The History Press) was released in October 2011 and reprinted in the United States in March 2012. Teaching & Work Experience: Professor Mokhtari has taught Comparative Politics, International Relations, Foreign Policy, Public Policy Administration, Political Economy, and Political Philosophy to undergraduate and graduate students. Born in Iran, he worked as a journalist and political consultant in Tehran in 1973-1979 and taught at the College of Communication (197376). He also analyzed international press reports for the Office of the Prime Minister (19777-78).
