Wine is made in each of twenty regions across the country and its island regions of Sicily and Sardinia, producing diverse wines of all styles. DENOMINAZIONE DI ORIGINE CONTROLLATA E GARANTITA The highest level of quality! Very strict rules govern the maximum yield of the grapes and aging requirements. The wines must meet the approval of a special tasting panel before they can achieve D.O.C.G. status. DENOMINAZIONE DI ORIGINE CONTROLLATA The next level of quality applies to wines made from specified grape varieties, specified areas of production and specific aging requirements. These specifications are not as stringent as those of D.O.C.G. and do not always guarantee good quality. One of the main complaints about D.O.C. is that the maximum yields allowed are very high, which obviously places quantity before quality in terms of importance. INDICAZIONE GEOGRAFICA TIPICA This level was added by the revisions of 1992 to cover table wines from specific geographical areas using varieties that were excluded in the original laws. This allows these wines to have the region of origin and the varietal on the label. For many wineries the IGT wines are the finest of their production. This area, which is located in the region of Lombardia in Northern Italy, has truly come to the forefront of the production of Sparkling wine. The landscape is dominated by the peaks and glaciers of the Mont Blanc. The climate is cold, but in certain micro-zones also provides outstanding conditions for winegrowing. Piemonte is seventh in terms of wine volume among Italy’s regions, producing some of the best wines in Italy. Piemonte has close to 50 of Italy’s D.O.C./D.O.C.G. zones, more than any other region. This region is primarily a red wine region, and is best known for its two noble wines, Barolo and Barbaresco, both made from the Nebbiolo varietal. Nebbiolo is named for the fog {Nebbia} that often blankets the vineyards of the Langhe and Monferrato hills area, where 90% of Piemonte’s wines come from. These wines are robust and full-bodied, and for Barolo and Barbaresco in particular, long-lived. The most widely cultivated grapes in Piemonte, however are Barbera and Dolcetto, from which prominent red wines of the same name are made. Both Barbera and Dolcetto are dry wines, but not as tannic and full-bodied as Barolo and Barbaresco. They are softer and intended for earlier consumption. Image or “Funny or interesting quote about wine” 18 C A S A D ’A N G E L O | F O R T L A U D E R D A L E BARBARESCO – DOCG One of the best wines in Italy, Barbaresco is made from the red grape Nebbiolo around the village of Barbaresco in the Langhe Hills. The wines are dry, robust and tannic in their youth and develop beautifully in the bottle. Barbaresco must be aged in wood for two years before it is released, three years for Riserva. This aging helps soften the tannins and acid in the wine. Alto Adige, named for the Adige river that runs through the valley of Alto Adige, was part of Austria until the end of World War 1, and the inhabitants to this day still follow the customs of their Germanic background, very similar to the populace of Alsace in France. They prefer to call their region Sud-Tyrol, its traditional name. Trentino, further south, has historically belonged to Italy, so names, customs, etc. are Italian. Wine is made throughout the region, but focused in the interior, among the rolling hills and fertile valleys around the cities of Florence and Siena. Today most of the production is focused on quality rather than quantity. Tuscany, home of the famous Chianti, is also home to the so-called “Super-Tuscan”, top quality wines. About 75% of the wines produced in Tuscany are red. This red grape varietal is the native Sangiovese and its various clones: Sangioveto, Brunello, Prugnolo Gentile, Morellino, etc. Other red grapes used for blending with Sangiovese are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Canaiolo, Mammolo, Colorino and Ciliegiolo. CHIANTI CLASSICO – DOCG Chianti is located in the central hills of Tuscany. Classico is the most famous of the eight zones of the region. Riserva means that the wine has been aged for at least 2 years in wood. Sangiovese is grown throughout Italy, however, in order to be named a Chianti, the grape must have been grown in the region of Chianti. It makes a rich, dry and powerful full-bodied red wine capable of aging for many years in the best vintages. Beginning with the ’97 vintage, all Brunello is aged for a minimum of four years, two years in the barrel. Prior to the ’97 vintage, the wine had to be barrel-aged for at least three and a half years, which many producers felt robbed the wines of some of the fruit character and left the wines overly tannic and rustic in style. A Brunello bearing the label “Riserva” must see at least 5 years of age before release. Then along came Sassicaia in Bolgheri and the revolution began. Today southern Tuscan wines no longer have to live in the shadow of Chianti Classico, Montepulciano and Montalcino. While Bolgheri has become the darling of Italian wine fashion nearby Morellino di Scansano D.O.C. in Maremma is located in the extreme South of Toscana on the border with Lazio. The climate is warmer than in Northern Toscana and produces richer, more powerfull wines. Sangiovese does better here than in Bolgheri, but it is also warm enough to ripen cabernet sauvignon. 685 Fattoria Le Pupille, Elisabetta Geppetti C A S A D ’A N G E L O | F O R T L A U D E R D A L E 11 45 37 SUPER TUSCANS - IGT In Italy, because of very strict laws, wine produced with non-indigenous grape varieties cannot be labeled as D.O.C. or D.O.C.G. and therefore are called “Vino da Tavola”. With the revisions of 1992, many of them began using the new IGT category, and one, Sassicaia was awarded its own D.O.C. More will inevitably follow. Lief Ercison, the Viking explorer, found vines in profusion when he landed on the Northeast coast and named it Vineland. When European vines were first planted on the West Coast, they lived. Those first plantings were of Mission grapes, tended by missionaries. Before California wines started to take us all by storm, there was a little matter called “Prohibition”. Between 1919 and 1933, alcohol was an illegal drug in the U.S.A. The acreage of land under vine actually increased during Prohibition. Grape growing wasn’t forbidden if you did it in the privacy of your own home. Some commercial wine-making was allowed too, for altar wine. Even so, from producing 55 million gallons of wine just before Prohibition, the U.S.A. produced only 3.5 million gallons in 1925. It was a period that did nothing to train the national palate. After Prohibition came the Depression and World War Two, so not until the 1970’s did a new, revived California wine industry start to take shape, and then it hit the headlines almost immediately. California wine was on its way, and it hasn’t looked back since. RP 90 422 Adriano, Barbaresco Basarin 2010 65 “Nebbiolo” The cherry and plum flavors are matched by savory, licorice and mineral notes in this taut sinewy version. Dense and concentrated, with lively acidity and energy on the finish. Presents a fine aftertaste of fruit, spice and mineral.. WS 92 542 Franz Haas, Pinot Nero Alto Adige DOC 2012 75 “Pinot Noir” The 2012 Pinot Nero is quite pretty. Expressive and resonant on the palate, the 2012 offers gorgeous vibrancy in its fruit and lovely mid-palate depth. Bright raspberries, strawberries, wild flowers and cinnamon add the final nuances in this attractive, mid-weight Pinot.. AG 90 537 Guerrieri Gonzaga, San Leonardo IGT 2008 135 “Cabernet Sauvignon-Cabernet Franc-Merlot” The 2008 San Leonardo is a wine in its infancy. The nose is immediately redolent of dark cherry, blackberry, leather, tobacco, mint and eucalyptus leaf. You will also appreciate the floral tones of pressed rose and almond blossom that lift from the glass. This vintage is especially marked by a duality of floral and menthol notes that rise from the glass with brilliant intensity. RP 92 722 Tenuta di Biserno, Il Pino di Biserno IGT 2008 110 “Cabernet Franc-Cabernet Sauvignon-Merlot-Petit Verdot” The 2008 Il Pino di Biserno is a rich wine endowed with considerable depth. Plums, blackberries, exotic spices, mocha and licorice are all woven together in this imposing, structured wine. The pedigree of the 2008 vintage comes through in spades. The 2008 is striking. I can’t wait to see how this ages. RP 93 712d Castello dei Rampolla, Sammarco IGT . 2005 155 “Cabernet Sauvignon-Merlot-Sangiovese” It possesses terrific depth of fruit and outstanding length, both of which are no doubt enhanced by the addition of some of the fruit that is normally for the D’Alceo bottling. In 2005 Sammarco is 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot and 3% Sangiovese. RP 92 T. Bellafonte, Montefalco Sagrantino “Collenottolo” DOCG 2010 105 “Sagrantino” Forest floor, ripe black fruit, truffle, leather and balsamic aromas open this bold, concentrated wine. The delicious palate offers layers of blackberry, spicy plum, black pepper, cassis and savory herb alongside big, velvety tannins. It has balance and depth but it’s still young and needs time to develop complexity. WE 94 811 Santadi, Carignano del Sulcis Sup. “Terre Brune” DOC 2007 125 “Carignano-Bovaleddu” The 2007 Carignano del Sulcis Superiore Terre Brune is gorgeous. This is an especially soft, round vintage for the Terre Brune. Layers of dark red fruit, flowers, sweet spices and tobacco are some of the many notes that blossom in this voluptuous, deeply textured wine.
