INTRODUCTION
Modern homes are not any more environments where various
devices perform separate and isolated tasks but a system of
distributed smart objects working together in a reliable and
predictable manner
INTRODUCTION
A smart home is a residence
equipped with various smart
objects which aim at
anticipating and responding to
the needs of its dwellers, in
order to promote their comfort,
well-being, security and
entertainment
In the field of Ambient Assisted Living (AAL), smart home provides
tailored services that assist users for a better, healthier and safer life
in their preferred living environment
INTRODUCTION
The smart home design and development poses a number
of technical challenges
New strategies have to look for smart and efficient ways to
capture and view disparate sets of data, aiming at
extracting meaningful knowledge
The efforts are addressed in particular toward handling Big
Data
MATERIALS AND METHODS
A lot of work has
been done on
volume and
velocity, whereas
the increase of
data variety
remains much
more difficult to
solve
It is necessary to adopt a new model of collaboration between
the various involved sources, regardless of the formats
used to represent the data
MATERIALS AND METHODS
• Various generic models of interoperability have been
proposed by researchers
• D4All proposes the Virtual Home Framework (VHF) : it
represents a possible pattern based on Sematic Web
technologies to be applied to solve such issue of
integration
• On the basis of the VHF, the herein presented research
analyzes and designs a technological platform in which
the data are enriched with semantic metadata in order to
integrate different types of Smart Objects

RESULTS
A significant study during this research has regarded the
identification of a valid Semantic Repository
The managed data comprise:
• the models, as representation of the knowledge about
home environment
• the population, compliant to the models
• the derivation rules needed to properly entail the implicit
knowledge
It must also provide reasoning capability
ADVANTAGES
• Ease the interoperability of different devices, using a
formal semantics
• Efficiently model and manage distributed data
• Exploit generic tools that can infer from and reason
about an ontology, thus providing a generic support
that is not customized on the specific domain
• Allow Semantic Search through the Knowledge Graph
FUTURE STEPS
• Validation and test of the proposed solution
• The design and development has to be paired
with a quantitative analysis of performance
• Dealing with legacy systems whose knowledge
models are so huge or complex to hinder the
integration process
Thank you!
