GREECE – ITALY THE “GRAND” POTENTIAL (tons) The mentioned Feasibility Study forecasted (in 1999) a traffic in Y2005 along PE 5/8 (assuming they would have been completed!) and along via Egnatia of 23,800,000 ton of goods (ca. 10% on rail) From/To Central Europe From/To Italy … And so distributed: 75% in the range that goes from Ancona to Brindisi 25% in the range that goes from Ravenna to Trieste (Koper) … In addition, the potential might shift from road to rail (according to their final destination) (*) SOURCE: FEASIBILITY STUDY ADRIATIC AND IONIAN CORRIDOR, 1999. GREECE – ITALY Other elements … Foreign Direct Investments (FDI’s) According to ICE, Italian businesses in Greece are mostly SME’s. Therefore, official statistics might not be accurate enough, for SME’s directly manage their affairs via local agents and distributors. Nevertheless, Italian businesses have been experimenting some other forms of investments... GREECE – ITALY Italian FDI’s in Greece were about 160 millions € (Ufficio Italiano Cambi) in Y2002. FDI’s meant to: - Maximize the internal market of Greece - Take advantage of geographic position of Greece, an access door to the Balkans and SE of Europe GREECE – ITALY ITALIAN PRESENCE … transport/logistics possible outcomes: -NELL’INDUSTRIA PESANTE, IN PARTICOLARE NEL NORD DEL PAESE (SALONICCO, MACEDONIA)- V. But freight and passenger flows that travel on shorter routes are an essential component of cities (ports) along our Med coastlines. Although a catch up is needed (and it takes time!) in order to respond to tourist and commercial increasing demands (refer to cruise business, for example)… GENERALLY SPEAKING… If we assume that 1)Road infrastructures have, in average, shorter programming/realization time than railways, 2)East – West corridors (mainly road ones) have shorter realization time than North – South ones … … than Adriatic and Ionian corridor is the natural answer to mobility needs generated from/to central Europe and Greece, the Balkans, Turkey … and farther away via existing intermodal transport services (road – sea – road) – Ro/Ro, Ro/Pax ships and planned services road – sea – railway (intermodal train services) SOURCE: TINA – TRANSPORT INFRASTRUCTURE NEEDS ASSESSMENT, WIEN. … WHERE WERE WE, THEN? 1. GENERAL FRAMEWORK – addressed in Ancona, JULY 2004 2. PAST INTERREG EXPERIENCES – to be addressed in technical committee 3. ANALYSIS – to be addressed in technical committees (Action 1 + Action 2) 4. Goal of Action 1 Networking around a data base project which will be mirroring the existing stock of infrastructures for freight and passenger in the area 3. ANALYSIS – The Starting Up Of Action 1 FIRST OF ALL, … DEALING WITH SURVEYS IS NOT A SIMPLE MATTER WE NEED TO PROCEED WITH THE ANALYSIS, TO BETTER THE STANDARDIZATION OF COLLECTED DATA (HELP IN FIND OUT A COMMON FORMAT IS NEEDED) SO, THE FORTHCOMING MONTHS ARE TO BE USED TO ACQUIRE A STANDARD FORMAT FOR DATA 3. ANALYSIS – Preliminary Recognitions Of Action 1 A EVERY PARTNER BETTER SPECIFY OWNERSHIP/LEGAL STATUS (+ A CONTACT PERSON FOR I.T. MATTERS) B IT IS POSSIBLE TO IDENTIFY A GENERAL TREND OF SPECIALIZATION C Y2000 ~ Y2003 PATTERN OF CARGO THROUGHOUTPUT IN ADRIATIC IS A GROWING ONE: HOW ABOUT YEAR 2004? D A DIFFERENT PATTERN OF DEVELOPMENT IS RECOGNIZABLE E EVERY PARTNER INDICATE (IF POSSIBLE) NATURE OF PROCEDURES TO COORDINATE DIFFERENT BODIES F THERE ARE SOME MISSING DATA THAT IMPEDE TO EVALUATE THE STATE OF THE ART OF I.T. IN EACH PORT 3. A C E F … ANALYSIS – Follow up Of Action 1
