Kale, nuovi investimenti
guardando all’export
Paola Giacomini - [email protected]
2015 was a tough year for Turkey and its business sector. The
terror attacks, refugee crisis, growing political tensions with
Russia and the uncertainty faced during the two election periods have naturally all had an impact on companies’ business
activities. This was confirmed by Zeynep Bodur Okyay, Chairwoman of Kale Group. “We have had to redouble our efforts
in other regions of Turkey and in export markets in order to
compensate for the difficulties experienced in the south-east
region of the country,” she said. “These efforts have been rewarded by strong results. and she and Group sales have risen
by around 20%, reaching almost TRY 2 billion [around 620 million euros, Ed.], with EBITDA up by 30%.” The Building Materials Group (tiles and bathroom furnishings) also performed
strongly, with 20% growth in domestic sales and 5% growth in
exports.
In 2015 the Kale Group’s tile production amounted to 54 million sq.m out of a total capacity of 69 million sq.m. Ceramic
tile sales totalled 253 million euros, including 66.4% in Turkey
and 33.6% in export markets.
CWR: Mrs Bodur, following a turbulent year in which you have
nonetheless posted strong results, what are your expectations for 2016?
ZEYNEP BODUR: There is still a great deal of uncertainty

a +5%.

ahead, but we will hopefully leave all of this negativity behind
in 2016. As Kale Group, we expect to grow by more than 20%
this year. We are planning to move ahead cautiously in Turkey
but intend to expand our export activity, adapting our market approach according to the specific needs of each country.
CWR: Where are your main export markets?
Z. BODUR: The situation has not changed much with respect
to 2015. In Europe, our main export markets remain Italy, Germany, the UK and France. The United States and Canada continue to be key markets, although we are also growing in Mexico. The CIS countries and Nigeria were amongst our largest
market in 2015, while India and Pakistan show high potential and offer new opportunities for the future. We opened a
new showroom in Lahore, Pakistan in January 2016, followed
a month later by another in Doha, Qatar. We currently have
almost 30 showrooms or Kale Shop-in-Shop stores worldwide
(Germany, the UK, Italy, Iraq, UAE, Malaysia, Morocco and
Ivory Coast) and are considering opening new showrooms in
countries such as Saudi Arabia, Turkmenistan and Tajikistan.
In the Middle East we have maintained a strong presence in
Israel, the UAE and Saudi Arabia. The political tensions and
low oil prices have certainly had a big impact in the Middle
East, and this has also had negative effects on the building industry, which has always been a strong driving force behind
di incertezza, auspico che il
2016 si sia lasciato alle spalle
il periodo più negativo. Come
Paese.
CWR: Quali i mercati target?
In Europa, i principali sbocchi
Tra i no-
stri maggiori mercati nel 2015
ci sono anche i Paesi dell’area
CIS e la Nigeria, mentre India
e Pakistan presentano un alto
potenziale e nuove opportunità
per il futuro. Proprio in Pakistan,
a Lahore, abbiamo inaugurato
Kale attivi in vari Paesi (Germania, Inghilterra, Italia, Iraq, Emirati Arabi, Malaysia, Marocco,
Arabia Saudita, Turkmenistan e
Tajikistan. In Medio Oriente abbiamo mantenuto buone posizioni in Israele, Emirati Arabi e
Arabia Saudita. Certamente, le
tensioni politiche e il calo del

the economic growth of these countries. Kale has continued
to maintain excellent relations with its customers, so we will
be ready when stability returns to the region and building activity resumes.
CWR: In January you opened a new 7 million sq.m plant for
the production of porcelain tiles. Could you tell us about this
investment?
Z. BODUR: Demand for porcelain tiles is growing in our markets, so we decided to convert one of our first factories to produce glazed, matt and polished porcelain tiles in sizes ranging from 30x60 cm through to 60x60 cm, 60x120 cm, 80x80 cm
and 80x160 cm.
CWR: You have been producing large format tiles since 2005,
when you adopted System technology for the production of
1x3 m KaleSinterflex panels with a thickness of 3 mm. How has
your range evolved over these last ten years?
Z. BODUR: For the first few years we focused mainly on developing application systems for external façades, a segment
in which we have established a strong market position. In recent years, advances in surface decoration have boosted residential demand. We are now working on new kinds of services to widen the area of application of a material that is becoming increasingly popular amongst architects and interior
designers.
Amongst our development programs, we are also planning
to increase production capacity of Kalesinterflex panels, an
investment that we will probably begin this year. We will increase the range of sizes and thicknesses and adopt new
technologies for finishing and surface decoration.
CWR: Although you have stopped direct production in Italy, you have maintained a strategic base in the Sassuolo area through Kale Italia with around sixty employees. What are
your expectations in terms of synergies with the group?
Z. BODUR: Our presence in Italy has always had three main
goals: to maintain a logistics base in the heart of our largest European export market; to integrate different sales channels; and to create a design centre for product development,
which will use the latest technology and exploit the prestige
of the “Made in Italy” label of origin to make Kaleseramik
more competitive in foreign markets. We are already reaping
the rewards of our efforts and I am sure that we will see a big
improvement in results this year.

in spessore 3 mm. Come si è
evoluta la vostra offerta in questi dieci anni?
Z. BODUR: Nei primi anni ci
sassolese attraverso Kale Italia
dove operano una sessantina di
persone.
“Made in Italy”.
Stiamo già raccogliendo i frutti
