Stelvio Park - Parco dell`Adamello

STELVIO NATIONAL PARK(Parco Nazionale dello Stelvio)
Founded in 1935, the Stelvio National Park is one of Italy’s first national parks. It is the largest
protected area in the Italian Alps.The park covers an area of 131.000 hectares, and is situated in the
heart of the central Alps.It is divided into 3 zones: the Lombardy zone ( 60,000 hectares) and two
zones in the region of Trentino Alto Adige.
The area on the right hand side of the Valcamonica includes the Valle di Viso, Valle delle Messi,
Val Canè and the Val Grande.
Three- quarters of the mountains in the Stelvio park are 2000 metres high and found in the
Ortles-Cevedale group( highest peak is 3905 metres ). The stone layer was formed by old rocks
which were modified due to pressure and temperature (Filladi di Bormio).
In the North-West area there are sedimentary rocks created from the bottom of former seas. In the
province of Brescia ,in particular, there are igneous rocks such as garnets and diorites which have
volcanic origins.
NATURE AND SPECIES IN THE PARK
The park has a very rich vegetation and the areas at the bottom of the valley are full of meadows.
The coniferous forests on the mountainside slowly give way to alpine pastures, rock faces and
extensive areas of ice.
In the protected area there are about 150 glaciers which cover an area of about 11,000 sq. metres..
There are 260 different species of mammals and birds, in addition to large birds of prey: the golden
eagle (the symbol of the park) and the lammergeyer.( bearded vulture)
Deer and steinbock inhabit the park and are can easily be seen roaming around..
There are other important species such as squirrels, black woodpeckers, marmots, white hares and
ermines.

sulle indicazioni stradali ecc, non l’ inglese....
HOW TO GET TO The PARCO NAZIONALE dello STELVIO
You can reach the Parco Nazionale dello Stelvio from the Valcamonica.
- motorway A4 (Torino –Trieste ) exit Bergamo. Follow SS42 ( Tonale Mendola )to Edolo Follow
signs for Passo del Tonale .
o from Brescia along the road SP Sebina Orientale then SS42 (as above);
- from motorway A22 (Brennero),exit Bolzano.Follow SS42 to Passo del Tonale and the upper
Valcamonica;
- from the Valtellina (Bormio and S. Caterina Valfurva) over the Passo di Gavia, (Open only in
summer )
