GREETINGS!
From
the
director,
Mary
Hawn…
For
those
of
you
considering
music
lessons,
I
would
like
to
share
the
following
thoughts:
The
Gift
of
Music
We
hope
to
give
our
children
gifts
–
gifts
that
will
enable
them
to
grow
completely
into
who
they
already
are
and
further
into
who
they
will
become,
as
the
exercise
of
time
strengthens
its
connection
with
the
timeless.
Some
may
be
familiar
with
the
difference
between
the
stone
and
a
loaf
of
bread.
The
former
is
an
inappropriate
answer
to
the
request
for
sustenance;
the
latter
is
not.
Another
adage
speaks
of
the
difference
between
a
fish
and
fishing.
The
former
is
the
gift
for
a
day;
the
latter
is
the
gift
for
a
lifetime.
So
what
is
the
gift
of
music?
Surely,
it
is
not
a
stone.
It
is
bread,
fish
and
fishing
–
sustenance
for
the
moment
and
sustenance
for
a
lifetime.
And
it
is
a
gift
for
the
lifetime
of
the
planet.
What
a
large
claim
–
and
how
absolutely
defensible
a
claim
when
looked
at
in
terms
of
the
human
interactions
that
are
involved.
Whether
student
or
professional,
one
who
plays
an
instrument
listens
to
it.
And
what
is
heard?
The
stirrings
of
the
breeze
in
the
forest
–
the
wood
comes
to
life
as
it
once
stood
in
that
forest,
with
the
energy
coursing
along
the
paths
which
will
become
its
grain,
bearing
the
moisture
that
will
become
fullness
of
tone,
and
enough
dryness
to
reflect
brilliance.
The
instrument
“listens”
to
the
room
in
which
it
is
being
played,
responding
with
its
own
lustre,
which
in
turn
produces
a
reaction
from
the
performer.
The
intent
is
to
maximize
the
potential
for
beauty.
The
performer
listens
to
other
voices
from
the
past
–
in
particular,
that
of
the
composer.
Encoded
in
the
music
that
lasts
is
the
beat
of
the
human
heart
in
the
body,
which
has
struggled
with
its
own
timely
circumstances,
and
has
many
a
story
to
tell.
The
performer
listens
to
voices
from
the
present
as
well
–
that
of
the
audience
who
participates
in
the
communication
through
applause,
momentary
awed
silence,
and
sometimes
shuffling
of
feet
or
early
exit
if
there
is
some
dissatisfaction!
The
performer
weighs
this
audience
reaction
for
the
next
time
–
because
both
matter,
the
“speaker”
and
the
“listener”
who
also
speaks.
Music
making
involves
a
magnificent
exchange
of
human
energies,
whether
expressed
in
gestures
large
or
small.
And
how
does
this
all
begin?
It
begins
with
the
gift
of
music
lessons
–
not
a
stone,
but
bread,
fish,
and
fishing!
⇓
When
a
student,
who
may
be
child
or
adult,
undertakes
the
study
of
music
he
or
she
enters
a
world
of
possibilities
and
a
world
of
belief
in
those
possibilities.
The
teacher
is
one
who
believes
that
what
is
said
and
heard
is
of
value.
The
process
of
gaining
and
refining
musical
skill
is
the
process
of
refining
the
human
heart.
The
teacher
teaches,
the
student
learns,
the
student
teaches
the
teacher
through
the
musical
growth
which
is
realized.
What
is
said
and
what
is
heard
generates
an
ever‐increasing
circle
of
communication
whose
circumference
embraces
potential
and
integrity
of
action.
It
is
an
inclusive
circle
whose
only
admission
is
the
effort
of
listening
and
hearing,
and
discerning
best
right
action
–
whether
how
deep
a
breath
to
take,
how
fast
to
depress
a
key,
or
how
much
weight
to
apply
to
the bow.
Please
consider
giving
this
gift
of
music
instruction
to
your
child
or
yourself.
You
will
be
giving
the
gift
of
conscience
and
caring,
the
gift
of
integrity,
and
the
gift
of
humanity.
The
value
of
the
performance
of
the
student
and
the
professional
is
of
equal
worth
–
though
the
former
will
not
always
become
the
latter.
The
value
is
in
the
expression
of
one’s
best
self
in
community,
which
is
the
common
good.
In
giving
the
gift
of
music
instruction
to
your
child
or
yourself,
you
will
be
giving
the
gift
of
listening
and
the
gift
of
being
heard!
RECENT
MASTERCLASSES/EVENTS
Caron
Whitlaw
Hiebert,
Pre‐Exam
Technique
Workshop,
May
31
Caron
shared
tips
with
the
students
both
from
her
experience
as
a
teacher
and
as
an
examiner.
She
encouraged
the
students
to
transform
the
technical
requirements
into
MUSIC
by
shaping
the
scales
into
a
long
arc,
while
maintaining
a
constant
tempo
and
an
even
tone
throughout.
Caron
reminded
the
students
to
listen
to
themselves
as
they
played.
Practice
suggestions
included
using
flash
cards
to
secure
the
knowledge
of
key
signature
and
accidentals,
varying
the
order
of
practice,
and
the
use
of
rhythms.
