Scientific presentations at the Symposium will contribute to the advancement of knowledge and understanding in the field of reconstructive surgery and will help establish links among experts, consolidating scientific cooperation and exchange among different institutions. Oral presentations will be organized into theme sessions in the form of lectures, delivered by the most influential international experts who will try to evaluate the current status of research and its clinical applications. Interesting and innovative abstracts have been received from many Colleagues around the world and more are expected, which will help implement a successful program. Invited Speakers will present their latest observations, discoveries, and research. Panel discussions, led by faculty members, will provide ample opportunity for audience questions and participation. This Symposium will also represent an excellent opportunity for an update on the latest scientific developments, future trends, and products through lectures and a trade exhibition. We wish to also dedicate this event to the memory of Dr. Barrie Evans of Southampton, UK, who suddenly passed away recently. His contribution to scientific research and teaching, both internationally and within the EACMFS, and his genuine human depth will remain indelible. It would be a great pleasure to welcome you to Ferrara and be your host, both scientifically and socially. We trust that you will find the scientific program to be educational, the social program enjoyable, and the whole event rewarding. We look forward to seeing you in Ferrara for an exciting Symposium and experience that will be remembered for years to come. With best regards Symposium Chairman Symposium Co-Chairman Luigi C. Clauser M.D., D.M.D., FEBOMFS Julio Acero M.D., D.M.D., PhD., FEBOMFS Past President EACMFS EACMFS Executive Adviser Director and Chief President Elect IAOMS Center for Orbital Pathology & Surgery Head Department of Oral and Reference Center for Treatment of Rare Diseases Maxillofacial Surgery St. Anna Hospital & University Associate Professor University of Alcala FERRARA, Italy Ramon y Cajal University Hospital, MADRID, Spain 2 Welcome message from the EACMFS Education & Training Officer Dear Members, Dear Colleagues and Friends On behalf of the European Association for Cranio-Maxillo-Facial Surgery it is a great honour and pleasure for me to welcome you to this new scientific event to be held in Ferrara under the auspices of EACMFS as part of the Educational programme. This time I extend my best wishes and all support for this Conference both as a member of the Local Scientific Committee and as EACMFS Education & Training Officer. I am hopeful this Conference will build a bridge among experts to share knowledge and further advancements in the ever challenging field of facial reconstructive surgery. Modern head and neck reconstruction has seen a revolution in these last years and following the developments of knowledge and technological advances the quality of life of the patients has undoubtedly improved. I especially encourage surgeons, researchers and young investigators to submit abstracts of their work and research that are still in development or active implementation, as this Conference will be an excellent opportunity to receive feedback and new ideas. This scientific event is also included in the EACMFS eLearning project. I would like to congratulate the Chairman Prof. Luigi C. Clauser, and the Co-Chairman Prof. Julio Acero, former Education & Training Officer EACMFS, for bringing us all together here for two days of discussion on the state of the art of all aspects of reconstructive surgery. Very best regards Manlio Galiè, M.D., D.M.D., FEBOMFS EACMFS Education & Training Officer Unit of Cranio Maxillofacial Surgery Center for Orbital Pathology & Surgery Reference Center for Treatment of Rare Diseases St. Anna Hospital & University FERRARA, Italy 3 Welcome to Ferrara ... and to Italy A trip to Italy is always a discovery. More than half of the world’s historic and artistic heritage is located in this country. The works of art that Italy boasts date back to different epochs and yet are geographically very close. On the same day and in the same city one can easily visit a Roman archaeological site, a baroque church and a modern art museum. Evidence of the past and its rich history can be found everywhere. From fine wines and exceptional cuisine to the magnificent art treasures and historical sites, to music, dance and more, culture passed down from century to century. The history of Ferrara dates back around 1300 years when Ferrara was a Byzantine military castrum (fortified city). In 1391 after the founding of the University, which is one of the oldest Italian and European Universities, Ferrara became an important intellectual and artistic centre and one of the most opulent courts of the Renaissance. This ancient city lying on the Po river valley, shows the tourists the magical atmosphere of its past with its red brick walls and the tree-lined avenues. From 1995 Unesco has included the historical centre of Ferrara in the list of World Cultural Heritage as a splendid example of a town planned in the Renaissance and still keeping its historical centre intact. Learning Objectives At the conclusion of this symposium, participants should be able to ... • recognize the tissue and functional deficits that define clinical need in face restoration and rehabilitation • describe current strategies in reconstructive surgery of the face including the last advances in regenerative therapy and stem cells • select appropriate treatment options and compare approaches for surgical treatment of complex facial deformities • review current transational research (“from bench-to-bedside”) in Cranio-Maxillofacial reconstructive surgery • review the advances in medical and surgical technology and benefit from this fundamental coverage on the use of technology in clinical practice 4 Program Highlights • Reconstructive & Aesthetic Surgery, Facial Reconstruction • Facial Fat Grafting, Maxillofacial and Craniofacial Applications of Fat Grafting • Regenerative Medicine & Surgery, Regional Consideration of Fat Grafting in the Face and Neck • Tissue Engineering, Piezosurgery & Regeneration • Regenerative Surgery and Distraction Osteogenesis, Advanced Bone Surgery • Microsurgery, Local Flaps in Head and Neck Reconstruction • Alloplastic Facial Contouring, Craniofacial & Orbital Surgery • Trauma Sequelae, Tumour Surgery and Reconstruction Strategies • Critical Areas of Reconstruction & Regeneration Target audience • Maxillo & Craniofacial Surgeons • Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons • Microvascular Surgeons • ENT Surgeons • Plastic Surgeons • Aesthetic Surgeons • Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Residents 5 Faculty Julio Acero - Madrid (Spain) Adi Rachmiel - Haifa (Israel) Fernando Almeida Parra - Madrid (Spain) Carlo Riberti - Ferrara (Italy) Alfred G.
