Arrival either on Saturday and Sunday, or in the afternoon or at night would imply finding temporary accommodation at hostels. After landing Milan’s main airports, Malpensa and Linate ( www.aeroporto-malpensa.com and www.milanolinate.eu/it ) are well connected to the city center through a shuttle train ( www.malpensaexpress.it )and bus services ( www.malpensashuttle.it ; www.atm-mi.it ). Taxis are available in case of lack of public transportation (late arrivals, strikes, etc.). Please provide us with a mobile number for Europe, so that we can contact you on your way in. ACCOMMODATION EMEA scholarship holders are entitled to accommodation in a CIDIS ( www.consorziocidis.it ) apartment, shared with 2/3 other students (double rooms). The apartments are assigned according to CIDIS selection criteria, possibly to students belonging to the same mobility program. The payment is due within the 10th day of each month. A € 200 deposit is required upon arrival. Cost for the first month’s accommodation is 50% reduced if the admission is made in the second half of the month; similarly for the last month’s accommodation, if the check-out is done within the first 15 days of the month. Accommodation contract The accommodation contract is based on a minimum stay of 3 months. After 3 months, if the student decides to vacate the apartment, he/she is due to give written notice no less than 7 days prior to vacating. The neighbourhood is well connected through public transportation. The apartments are set at the top of six-floor apartment buildings. Lifts are available for some units. The apartments are furnished. Bed linen is provided; cookware is not provided. Each apartment is equipped with shared kitchen and bathroom. In Winter apartments are heated according to City regulations, created to keep pollution levels down, which limit indoor heating temperature to 19 Celsius degrees. Guest are invited to inform CIDIS by email of any appliance malfunctioning or damage. Dining at the University Dining halls are available in all our facilities and the meal price is € 6. Please require your meal card at the CIDIS office upon arrival. Vegetarian meals are available. If your religion entails specific food restrictions, please let us know and we will provide you information about different solutions. Conduct code Scholarship holders, as CIDIS guests, are to follow the CIDIS regulations and, in general, to behave politely towards the other guests. Politeness breach may also be reported to CIDIS which might take action accordingly. When signing the housing contract with the CIDIS please take vision of the regulations. LIFE IN MILAN Although the spring and the fall are relatively mild, sometimes rainy, the climate during the winter can be pretty cold (the temperature can drop below 0 Celsius degrees, snowfalls may occur) while, during the summer, the city is subject to heat waves which can raise the temperature up to 35 Celsius degrees. Keep in mind those information while packing, especially for a long stay. Cost of life in Milan A few examples of basic living costs in Milan. The average monthly fee for renting a furnished studio is € 800, € 1300 for a two-bedroom apartment. The average price for a lunch (pizza and beverage) is € 15. A ticket for the movies costs € 10. A train ticket between Milano and Rome costs € 80; a 90 minute ticket for public transportation within the city limits costs € 1.50. A coffee costs € 1. ESN ESN (Erasmus Student Network) is an association which represents international students, providing opportunities for cultural understanding and self-development under the principle of Students Helping Students. Through their ffice, located in our main building, you will be able to get in touch with other exchange students, sharing thoughts, events and opportunities. PERMIT OF STAY AND TAXPAYERS CODE Upon arrival, please report to our Office in order to start procedures to obtain stay permit, cash checks, open a bank account, and to receive the advanced payment of two months of subsistence allowance. Permit of Stay We will guide you through the procedures to obtain your permit of stay. The application must be forwarded to the Italian government within 8 working days from your arrival. It will cost € 160 (subject to variations – eligible for reimbursement by EMEA). Please bring 4 bright, passport-size pictures with you. Taxpayers Code As soon as you arrive, you will be addressed to a government office to obtain your taxpayers code, an identification code vital for you to sign contracts, cash checks, purchase telephone sim cards etc. HEALTH We remind EMEA students that they are covered for health and accident (see EMEA guidelines). Besides, those who are not willing to anticipate money for frequent medical care can take advantage of the services offered by the Italian public health system (free visits by a family doctor, reduced prices for prescriptions and visits) at € 300 fee. Kindly inform us about special health conditions in advance. Any information you will provide will be covered by privacy.
