doesn't necessarily

they take and question
you with so much minding good manners, it's
best to avoid self-accusations with shocking truths.
That's of course if you
want to be set free, which
is sometimes not the
case. Violence needs to
be fake because, even
though it's hard to admit,
violence is beautiful. Film

Tell us about your book/collection GOAD...
It is an epitaph of sorts for my illustration career-I wanted to put
out a pure art book but the reality of the last ten years had been
illustration. Seeing them now, some things I like, while other
times, it shows how stupid my work can be.
Your work shows a particular interest in the human
being; movements, anatomy, situations and people,
why is that?
"Man" is one of the few things I can say very well. I am motivated
by guilt, frustration and narcissism and the body is uniquely suited to expressing this.
A typical day for Phil Hale...
Coffee and biscuits in bed with my wife and children-my happiest
moment of the day. The rest of the day is spent avoiding work in
the studio- and coffee, magazines, friends, motorcycles, a bit of
drawing all keep me clean. Most of my work is large portraits now,
and they are like starting up a movie production: agonizing to get
underway but fine once the momentum is up. But hard work initially so much of my day is avoidance. I am trying to deal with this
more responsibly but that is not always natural to me.
Apart from movements, you also use photography
and digital graphics.. which do you feel more comfortable with?
I think painting is the most difficult and so the most worthwhile-it
is the only form that shows you how borderline your competence
is. I don't actually do much digital. The drawing is the most honest and pure and also the least essential.
Your work shows strong violence, dynamic yet
frozen at the same time, almost repressed...
I am constantly suppressing my feelings. Ideally they would not
appear in my art either but I lack the skill to hide them effectively.
We know you often visit our country... what do you
think of Italian creativity?

I'm from London, but at 21 I moved to Mexico City and then
onto Los Angeles. My first publication was in 1993, a cover
for Newsweek. It showed a boy running with a machine
gun looking out for members of a rival gang. I've worked
with the New York Times, The Face and Rolling Stone.
Tell us about your Gang series..
In 1992, I started looking for gang members to photograph, but when you look for something, it seems to not
exist. Then, while I was photographing murals outside a
liquor store, some of them approached me and asked me
to photograph them. The gang was called "West Side

episode in the Flower of Bloody Flesh series launches it
beyond the Land of the Rising Sun in the best of ways, with
a lawsuit in the States. It couldn't have been a better introduction. The FBI thanked actor Charlie Sheen for his credibility. Between appalled competitors and morbose critics,
some episodes, but not all, let themselves go only to the
excruciating transparency of desire, resisting intervention

They are extreme movies, they're Japanese, and the only thing
which follows them are the invisible atrocities committed by serial killer Tsutomo Miyazaki, caught in 1989 while approaching his
latest victim, a fragile object of senseless tortures. He had 6000
videos in his home and among the titles, the Guinea Pigs series
held high regards. The first episode of the Devil's Experiment
series (1988), just tounderline the ambiguity of the work's limitsis it fake blood, pig's blood or could it really be human blood?titles and end titles are cut out, just to use an appropriate verb,
as if to maintain anonymity in a sick form of exhibitionism. For

excruciating pain caused by a macabre trio of laughing figures

The last frontier in wrestling (the sport which mimes violence with such conviction as
to turn into an absurd theatre) is called Kaiju, where a group of wrestlers come together to recreate fighting scenes from movies and tv series depicting Japanese superheroes from the 70's (Godzilla, Megaloman, Power Rangers) You'll see live action
by 80 meter tall giants, pointy dinosaurs with killer weapons and the baddest of
all:Dr.BOX, sadistic doctor with a square head. The "Giants in the City" proves to be
genius among this hoard of brainless creatures and can be created by filling a ring with
small cardboard models with buildings, cars and people to destroy during the great
battle. //sb//
