The only wish for violent people, other than a nicely warmed catholic hell, is to pretend. It Stirato postermagazine doesn't necessarily mean lying, but when they take and question you with so much minding good manners, it's best to avoid self-accusations with shocking truths. That's of course if you want to be set free, which is sometimes not the case. Violence needs to be fake because, even though it's hard to admit, violence is beautiful. Film is violence is what Tarantino keeps repeating. Visual arts offer unforgettable moments thanks to the undisturbed Tell us about your book/collection GOAD... It is an epitaph of sorts for my illustration career-I wanted to put out a pure art book but the reality of the last ten years had been illustration. Seeing them now, some things I like, while other times, it shows how stupid my work can be. Your work shows a particular interest in the human being; movements, anatomy, situations and people, why is that? "Man" is one of the few things I can say very well. I am motivated by guilt, frustration and narcissism and the body is uniquely suited to expressing this. A typical day for Phil Hale... Coffee and biscuits in bed with my wife and children-my happiest moment of the day. The rest of the day is spent avoiding work in the studio- and coffee, magazines, friends, motorcycles, a bit of drawing all keep me clean. Most of my work is large portraits now, and they are like starting up a movie production: agonizing to get underway but fine once the momentum is up. But hard work initially so much of my day is avoidance. I am trying to deal with this more responsibly but that is not always natural to me. Apart from movements, you also use photography and digital graphics.. which do you feel more comfortable with? I think painting is the most difficult and so the most worthwhile-it is the only form that shows you how borderline your competence is. I don't actually do much digital. The drawing is the most honest and pure and also the least essential. Your work shows strong violence, dynamic yet frozen at the same time, almost repressed... I am constantly suppressing my feelings. Ideally they would not appear in my art either but I lack the skill to hide them effectively. We know you often visit our country... what do you think of Italian creativity? Parlaci del tuo libro/raccolta GOAD… È una specie di epitaffio sulla mia carriera di illustratore. But violence falls into sore ugliness when it becomes real, it spirals into the depths of extreme evil when one thinks to actually practice it. Lights dim out, the beauty of it breaks down like the decomposing corpse of a dream. A philosopher once said, beautiful things are difficult and what is more difficult than faking to make something seem real.
