National anthems and flags The Italian flag: a brief history • The Italian flag consists of three vertical bands of equal size. the colors are: green, white and red. • The Italian flag was inspired by the French flag introduced by the revolution of 1789. When Napoleon's army crossed Italy, from March 1796, flags of tricolor shape were adopted by the various military departments that flanked the French army. 1805 the Italian Reign flag 1861 finally the Italian Reign • In 1861 after bloody wars against foreign oppressors for unity, freedom and independence was founded the Reign of Italy and this is its flag with the emblem of King Vittorio Emanuele II 1946: finally freedom! With the end of the Second World War and the proclamation of the republic, the Italian flag loses the emblem of the Savoy House. The national anthem • • The national anthem verses were written in 1847 by the young poet and national patriot Goffredo Mameli and the music by Michele Novaro. The words call Italian people to fight for their freedom. The song was adopted as the official anthem in 1946 after the defeat of fascism, Nazism and the end of World War II.
