The demography, urban development and the history of Italian cities lead to big
differences in the development of Smart City projects
4
Italian municipalities… are smarts?
Large cities
• started specific and structured process based on "holistic" approach
– a) integration of new projects and existing public services, b)
creation of governance's mechanism to foster cooperation
Little-medium cities
• created projects on specific items (transport and mobility, egovernment, energy efficiency, cultural heritage, platform and big
data) that are starting to merge top-down policies and bottom-up
solutions;
Small towns
• mostly in the countryside, lag behind due to geographical
dimensional and infrastructural divide but they are new models
based on “integration” (of networks, services and local actors)
