JUNE 1982
The A HEPA Hall for Boys has been
dedicated at St. Basil's Academy, a residential child care center for the orphaned,
abandoned, neglected and those whose
families are either unable or unwilling to
support them at home.
Archbishop Iakovos presided over the
May Ist dedication ceremony that oficially
opened three separate dormitories built by
the Order of AHEPA.
Supreme President Gustav Coffinas and
Louis G. Manesiotis, general chairman of
the fund-raising drive, were joined by
hundreds of AHEPAns on the picturesque
campus.
The new dormitories, each of wh ich will
house a different age group, replace the
previous accommodations in a dilapidated
former horse stable and will house a total of
72 youths.
The Archbishop praised the efforts of
AHEPAns who raised $1.3 million $300,000 more than the cost of construction
- and who have established a trust fund with
the excess to cover the maintenance of all
buildings on the Academy grounds.
Manesiotis was lauded by the Archbishop
as the man who was "the inspiration and
force behind this great project." He was
described as a "devoted Christian who
brings to fruition all he promises by working
day and night to achieve what he
undertakes. ,.
The past Supreme President of AHEPA is
also an Archon of the Ecumenical Patriarchate.
"This new AHEPA Hall for Boys is one of
the largest - if not the larg~st - fund-raising
and humanitarian projects ever completed
by the Greeks of America," Manesiotis said.
"This dedication represents both an end
and a beginning," he added ... As we dedicate
these buildings this morning to the memory
of those who have led us to this hi_storie .
occasion, we shall move forward into a new
era of accomplishment."
Another past Supreme President, William
G. Chirgotis of Springfield, N.J., was the
architect of the new AHEPA Hall for Boys,
". have not done more than you," he
modestly told his fellow AHEPAns. "In the
performance of my assigned responsibilities, I have merely done that which my
conscience and heart would have me do;
23
what the memory of my parents would
remind me to do; and what my wife and
children have encouraged me to do. This
has always been my creed and conrnerstone.
"What greater satisfaction could there be
than to share a little happiness and hope
with a wandering child who has never
known the feeling of love and affection; to
help him find his way?"
Supreme President Coffinas, an attorney
from Brooklyn, N.Y., said: "This is not a
project of the Order of AHEPA alone; this is
a project of the Greek-American people,
the Hellenes, because we are representative
of Hellenism. We will help our Church in
every avenue, wherever the help is needed,
for we are not AHEPAns alone, we are
Greek Orthodox Christians serving God in
mady, many ways."
The Supreme President used the occasion
of a luncheon that followed the dedication to
announce an ambitious plan for the perpetuation of the Greek language in the United
States.
"As I dicussed with His Eminence, and as
I recently discussed with Greek Prime
Minister Papandreou, something must be
done for our children today in trying to keep
alive the Greek language.
"We are faced with the third and fourth
generation here in the U.S. The Greek language is becoming further and further
remote than it was 10 and 20 years ago. We
do not want to suffer IO yea rs from today,
so we will start a program to try and see what
we can do to introduce the Greek language
to youngsters.
"Yes, we have the Journey to Greece and
we have the Journey to America for Greek
youths. But we are embarking on setting up
a camp on the outskirts of Athens where we
may send 1,500 or 2,000 children to camp for
two months so that they can mingle with
Greek children, exchange views, learn about
each other's ways ofJifeand develop pen-pal
friendships.
Another past Supreme President, Dr.
Peter V. Paulus, echoed the sentiments of
Coffinas.
"History is notjustevents,"he noted, "but
people. People living, acting, worthy goals
and a commitment to action are the basis of
progress, whether it is a person, an institution of a civilization."
Thomas A. Pappas, a major benefactor
for whom one of the dormitories is named
(the others are named for Chirgotis and the
late Spiro C. Samaras), was too ill to attend
the ceremony and luncheon, but sent his
attorney to represent him.
George Pantis, a lawyer from
Washington, D.C., spoke briefly but
eloquently. "The way this (luncheon) program has been conducted and the manner in
which the dedication was performed give all
Greek-Americans good reason to be proud ,'"
he said.
Past Supreme President Stephen Scopas,
who served as Toastmaster at the luncheon,
14
Past Supreme Pete, Paulus and the widow a/Spiro c. Samaras cut the ribbon/or the Spiro
C. Samaras Hall. along with members of the Samaras Family.
"NEW YORK"
said: "Today marks a milestone in the
history of AHEPA. Sixty years after its
founding, we can truly affirm and we do
declare that this is AHEPA's finest hour.
"Louis Manesiotis endeavored and
succeded in uniting AHEPA behind this
project. For the first time in the history of
AHEPA, we were united to a man in our
commitment for children, in our commitment for humanity."

THE ATHENS CHANDRIS HOTEL
MORE THAN 30 YEARS AGO
AHEPA's involvement with St. Basil's
began more than 30 years ago, in August,
1950, when the Supreme Concention
meeting in Cleveland, OH, appropriated
55.000 as a donation to St. Basil's.
Concerned with the fate of youngsters living
there, the Supreme Convention mandated
two years later that all AHEPA chapters
donate the proceeds of an annual chapter
function to the Academy.
The Daughters of Penelope had decided
to auction an oil painting of a young girl at
the Academy, donated by artist Theodore
Tsaropoulos, at the 1952 Supreme
Convention to raise funds for their charities.
Zoe Cavalaris of Charlotte, North Carolina
suggested that the painting be used on a
Christmas Seal to raise money for the St.
Basil's children. By 1954 the Daughters had
committed themselves to raising funds
through their Christmas Seal campaign and
within a few years were able to donate the
528,000 needed to build the waterworks.
Originally, because of the crowded
quarters of the Rupert Estate. St. Basil's
only accepted girls. When the need for
additional housing was recognized, the
AHEPA initiated a drive to renovate the
horse stable of the Rupert Estate and
convert it to a boy's dormitory.
The drive was led by a tireless Ahepan,
Brother John K.iamos, a florist from New

York Chapter #97 then serving as Supreme
Treasurer. When Brother Kiamosaddressed
the delegates assembled in Pittsburgh for the
28th Supreme Convention he urged an allout effort: "The AHEPA School for Boys
will be the greatest example of AHEPA
philanthropy. It will remain as a beacon, a
shini ng light of our sincerity! ... This is a
job we started and must finish! The help of
every member is necessary! Let us all put our
shoulders behind the wheel and have our
school open by next year."
The Order, inspired by the dedication of
those like Kiamos, embarked upon the
Herculean task of raising the necessary
funds . The project continued during a
succession of Supreme Presidents, including
Stephen Scopas, John L. Manta, and c.P.
Verinis.
The renovations began and the fundraising continued. In 1957 District #20
raised $6,000, but the most amazing feat was
performed in Chicago, the heart of Greek
America, when Chicago Municipal Court
Judge James A. Geroulis personally raised
over $5.000.
The Hall was dedicated on June 14, 1959
by ArchbishOp Iakovos. Finally, the work of
the Brothers had become a liveable structure of mortar and brick. About 100 boys to
move in and begin classes that Fall.
Following the dedication ceremony, the
entire assembly moved east of the Administration Building for a second ceremony.
There, the Archbishop and AHEPA leaders
broke ground for a second AHEPA building
on campus - the AHEPA School for Boys
and Girls. Another fund drive among
the AHEPA family was initiated and the
AHEPA School was dedicated three years
later, on June 17, 1962 and John Kiarnos
represented Supreme President Nicholas
Coffinas at the dedication. The total raised
by AHEPA for these two projects was
$335,000.
The annual Daughters St. Basil's Seal
Drive has become a part of the Penelopian
tradition. By 1970, the Seal Drive had raised
over $ 105,000 and the Daughters of
Penelope were able to build a new dormitory for girls - the Penelopian Hall for Girls.
The renovation work undertaken to
convert the Rupert stables into the AHEPA
Hall for Boys in 1959 did make great
improvements in the lives of the boys who
lived there, but over the years the condition
of the buildings worsened: it was
overcrowded, plaster was falling from the
ceilling, and paint was peeling from the
walls.
In 1978, Past Supreme President William
Chirgotis and Supreme President Peter
Derzis went to St. Basil's to present a check
for $165,000 to renovate the Hall for Boys.
But after closing examining the building,
Brother Chirgotis, a well·known architect,
believed that a new building was needed.
The fund-raising campaign was launched
on February I. 1979. The Supreme Con-
"NEW YORK"
An overflow crowd of more than 600 Ahepans and members of
the Greek·American community of New York attended a lavish
testimonial dinner for Supreme President Custav Coffinas at the
New York Hilton. The dinner was sponsored by the members ofhis
chapter, Brooklyn 1141, and the DiSlriCI #6 Lodge. In his remarks
at his testimonial dinner, Supreme President Co/finas thanked
all his Ahepan Brothers and friends who throughoUl his career
vention had already set aside S 165,000 in
cash in escrow for this project. The AHEPA
St. Basil's Committee was formed and
members have included His Eminence
Archbishop lakovos and the Supreme
President of the Order of AHEPA,
Honorary Chairmen; Past Supreme President Louis G. Manesiotis, General Chairman; Peter N. Derzis, Sam Nakis, Dr. Peter
V. Paulus, John G. Plumides, William P.

Chirgotis, Architectura l Consultant; John
Mandros, Gustav Coffinas, E. Peter
Mitchell, Thomas L. C hase, Tommie
Sotiriou, James G. Petheriotes, and
Anthony Demakos. During the 1954
AHEPA St. Basil's Drive, Manesiotis had
been Supreme Governor and had worked
with Kiamos to raise funds for S1. Basil's
then.
The 57th Supreme Convention elected
Nick Smyrnis Supreme President of the
Order of AHEPA, and he made the drive a
top priority for the fraternity. "Anyone who
has ever visited the Academy in Garrison,
New York, knows that there is no better
contribution that the AHEPA can make
than building this new Hall for Boys," he
said.
Even before the St. Basil's AHEPA Hall
for Boys Fund Drive was officially
launched, contributions began arriving at
Headquarters. Eac h newslette r, each
Ahepan. carried progress reports about the
fund-raising. By February, 1980, 25% of
the $650,000 needed had been raised.
Chapters planned dinner dances and other
events with all proceeds donated to the
drive.
Escalating prices for raw materials and

labor pushed the estimated building cost for
the Hall even higher. President Smyrnis and
General Chairman Louis Manesiotis, the
two main forces behind the campaign drove
the membership even harder to raise the
money. Smyrnis stood for fe-election at the
1980 Supreme Convention in WaShington,
DC, so he could see the drive through. They
travelled across the AHEPA domain and
spoke of St. Basil's: "There is a young boy, I
will call him Niko, that needs our attention
tonight," said Manesiotis to Ahepans across
the country. And , as Niko's sad eyes peered
from the cover of special brochures and as
Ahepans viewed a slide show about the
Academy and saw the decrepid conditions
wh ich existed at the school, the money
poured into Headquarters.

Oratorio: 'Erotokritos' by Tsontakis
By Theodore W. Libbey Jr.
(The N. Y. Times, May 17, 1982)
Being in the audience for .. Erotokritos, ...
the oratorio-drama by George Tsontakis
that received its world premiere Saturday
night at Alice Tully Hall, was a bit like
watching a Greek play with English subtitles
and musical interludes. The unusual fusion
of spoken Greek poetry rendered drama~
tically. Engli5h narration, choral commentary in the ancient Greek manner, dance as a
disguised , performs great feats of arms for
the king, and reveals his true identity only
after the king has sanctioned the stranger's
marriage to his daughter.
All this made for a pleasant evening of
theater, especially as buffered by the
animated narration of Alexis Mylonas. The
music, which bore certain hallmarks of the
second Viennese school - the choral settings
in particular had the ring of Schoenberg's
"A Survivor From Warsaw" - nonetheless
proved accessible and imaginative, and
seemed to work effectively on a subliminal
level as well. One suspects that there is an
opera-in-progress underneath the surface of
this "Erotokritos" and that such a treatment might be well suited to the material.
The account retained its momentum under
the composer's direction. despite minor
flaws in the execution and a few rhythmic
uncertainties on the part of the chorus.

George Tsontakis
symbolic enactment of plot and music
brought to mind such modern hybrids as
Stravinsky'S "Oedipus" and Penderecki's
"Paradise Lost," and achieved somewhat of
a mythic aspect as well.
The production, presented by the Metropolitan Greek Chorale, which Mr. Tsontakis
conducts, was directed by Loukas Skipitaris
and involved actors of the Greek Theater of
New York. The script, adapted by Mr.
Tsontakis and Mr . Skipitaris from
Vintzentzos Kornaros's 17th-century epic
love poe m "Erot o kritos ," effectively
condensed the IO ,OOO-line original to a
dramatic skeleton treated in II scenes. The
result, although not "Orlando Furioso" or
"Phedre," was an entertaining story in which
the hero, Erotokritos, played in Saturday's
performance by Demetri Velios, is banished
on account of his love for Aretousa
(Demetra Karras), a cooing. sentimental
type who happens to be the daughter of king
Heracles (Nicholas Kepros). Erotokritos,

Vocabulary of Modern
Spoken Greek
DR KIM ON A. LEGAKIS
(English-Greek and Greek-English)
Long out of print, the Vocabulary oj
Modern Spoken Greek by Donald C.
Swanson is again made available thanks
largely to persistent requests for its republication by scholars , students and travelers to
Greece. To the trained eye, it iseasily discernible that Swanson 's dict ionary, which he
modestly described as a voca bulary, was the
apex of a career of hard study in linguistics,
philology and lexicography, climaxed by a
year of field work in Greece. The main
characteristic of the Swanson dictionary is
its decided emphasis on the demotic or
spoken Greek, including those puristic
forms or expressions which have established
themselves as part of the spoken language.
The linguistic reforms enacted in 1976 in
Greece, championing the demotic,
vindicated Swanson's approach to the study
of Modern Greek, and will certainly make
the dictionary more useful than ever before.
T he dictionary's usefulness lies primarily
in its practical features. Among Modern
Greek dictionaries, it is the only one that
provides the two stems - the present and
the aorist - necessary for the formation of
the complete verbal system. This device
enables the neophyte of Modern Greek to
expand appreciably on the use of the Vocabulary, Similarly, Swanson pays special
attention to the irregular verbs and directs
the reader accordingly by providing crossreferences. Anothe r outstanding feature for
a dictionary of this size is the variety of
examples of basic usages and idiomatic
expressions under many entries. This occurs
both in the English-Greek and GreekEnglish parts of the dictionary. The Vocabulary is particularly useful to beginning
students in its examp les of preposition
usage. Finally. an unusual feature of this
volu me is the author's intrOduction , in
which he provides an insightful commentary
on the history, structure, orthography and
pronunciation of Modern Greek. This part
of the Vocabulary constitutes an impressive study in itself, and it reflects the author's
scholarship and erudition In history,
lingu istics and philology. The introduction could, in fact, be published separately as
a guide to teachers as well as students of
Modern Greek. Published together with the
vocabulary, it transforms the volume into a
veritable handbook of Modern Greek.
Donald C. Swanson (1914-1976) was
trained in the classical and Romance
languages at the University of Minnesota
and in Sanskrit and Indo-European
comparative philology at Princeton University. He taught in the C lassics Department at the University of Minnesota for
thirty years (1946-1976). At Minnesota,
he also participated in the linguistic and
comparative philology programs and introduced the course in Modern Greek .
