We now rejoice in the fifty days of Easter culminating in the celebration of Pentecost. I invite anyone who has not communicated with the parish planning committee to please do so! Your participation is very important to us all since our future depends on all of us growing together in love and mutual support. Low Sunday (or White Sunday) – the close of the Octave of Easter – has recently gained a new name: “Divine Mercy Sunday”. This name derives from the approved private revelations of St. Faustina. These private revelations places strong emphasis on the mercy of God in all phases of one’s spiritual life, especially when one finds him or herself far from God, for whatever reason. No matter how far we feel we are – God is always close to us. He never abandons us and he is with us right to the end of our life. There is always hope! This is the message of Divine Mercy. As it is Jubilee Year of Mercy and Divine Mercy Sunday, it is most fitting that we have welcomed our newest statue in the church – the image of Jesus as Divine Mercy – this weekend. From His pierced heart comes water and blood – the signs of baptism which restores us to our dignity as God’s children and of the Holy Eucharist, which as St Augustine teaches us is the unique food that makes us like it – that is like God – rather that it becoming like us. As baptism starts this process of transformation, which we call our sanctification, i.e., being made holy/whole, the Holy Eucharist nourishes us so that we have the faith, hope and love to stay on this path. Next month our parish will celebrate First Holy Communions. The children made their first confessions just before Easter and many, it should be noted, also returned to the Sacrament, sometimes after decades, in part because of Father Gabriel’s article on confession. The response has truly humbled him and indeed all of us. These children will take their next step in their personal relationship with Jesus Christ on May 22nd, the Solemnity of the Blessed Trinity at the Masses at 10:15 am and 11:30 am. These steps – the frequent celebration of the Sacraments of Confession and Communion, not only benefit them but indeed the entire human race. How? Whenever a Christian takes his or her call to follow Christ seriously, the world is transformed. You and I have the power – and indeed the right – to change our lives when we permit God to change us (I don’t have the right to run someone else’s life, but I do have the right and the responsibility to change mine). God will not change us – heal us and make us whole – unless we allow Him to do so. Our freedom is too precious to God. Indeed, He values it much more it we often do. God made us free because there is only love when there is true freedom – the capacity to choose the good for the sake of the other beyond the good of one’s own. Since God is love, God is also freedom. Cari parrocchiani, Buona Pasqua! Come? CHURCH OF ST. ROCCO, GLEN COVE, NEW YORK He made us free; this also explains His incredible patience with the human race and its failings. He wants us to awaken to our dignity and His goodness. He will willing to wait and even willing to make up for our sins through Jesus’ death on the Cross, so that when the New Creation begins, all just claims against us and our lack of love will be settled and forgiven. Mercy is never cheap! Like grace, someone pays. God has paid for us so that the entire human race might receive a new beginning. Congratulations to our song leader, Cloe San Antonio!! On March 18th and 19th, she performed at the National Opera Center in Manhattan in the opera, Romeo and Juliet. This famous literary work by William Shakespeare was written in 1594. Over the years, several composers have written music for this very dramatic tragedy, and it is commonly performed as an opera or ballet. This opera was written in 1867 by Charles Gounod and sung in French. Cloe played the part of Gertrude, the nurse who looks after Juliet. She sang beautifully and had such an impressive state presence! Well done, Cloe!! 2016 Catholic Ministries Appeal Update We are very grateful to the 47 families who made pledges.
