Descriptive Adjectives Italian Grammar The question, “Com’è?” meaning, “How is it?” • Answering this question requires the knowledge of using descriptive adjectives. • For example in English a descriptive adjective is, “pretty.” • The pretty (adjective) girl (noun). • Descriptive adjectives are words that modify or describe nouns (person, place or thing). Regole/Rules • In Italian, adjectives are usually placed after the noun they modify in a sentence. • For example: • È una casa bella. • It is a pretty/beautiful house. Ancora Regole/ More Rules • Italian adjectives agree in: gender (masculine or feminine) and in number (singular or plural) with the nouns they modify. • In other words, the final vowel is changed according to the gender and number being modified. Adjective-Noun Agreement • For example when modifying masculine nouns with adjectives such as bello the end is –o only if it is singular and when it is plural it ends in –i making it belli.
