Σαν 'Αμερικανοί έλληνικής καταγωγής δεν μπο­
ροϋμε να μείνουμε άδιάφοροι μπροστα σε μια τέτοια
δήλωση που είναι όχι μόνο κατάφορα άναληθης
άλλα άποτελεί καί ϋβρι για τη χώρα που στάθηκε
πάντα στό πλευρό τής 'Ελλάδας σε κάθε δύσκολη
στιγμή .
Πέρυσι τό καλοκαίρι ο{ πέντε
· Ελληνοαμερικα­
νοί βουλευτές μας έστειλαν δύο έπιστολες στόν 'Έλ­
ληνα Πρωθυπουργό καi έξέφραζαν τη σοβαρή τους
άνησυχία για τiς έπιπτώσεις που εχει ό άντιαμερι­
κανισμός στίς προσπάθειές τους να προωθήσουν καί
να άγωνισθοϋν για τα έλληνικα θέματα στο Κογ­
κpέσσο. Προφανώς ο{ έπιστολες έκείνες δεν είχαν
έπίδραση.
Είναι άκόμη πιό άκατανόητο τό δτι οί παραπάνω
μώσει τίς φιλικες σχέσεις καί τους δεσμους μεταξυ
'Ελλάδας καί ΗΠΑ••. 'Όπως δηλώνει τό Καταστα­
τικό της, ή κίνηση αύτη δεν έχει καμια κομματική
σύνδεση ούτε έδώ οϋτε στήν 'Ελλάδα. Για να πραγ­
ματοποιήσει
τόν
αντικειμενικό
της
σκοπό,
θα
συνεργασθεί με ύφιστάμενες οργανώσεις καi δημο­
σιογραφικα όργανα καί με άλλα πρόσφορα μέσα
έπικοινωνίας καί έδώ καί στην 'Ελλάδα . Για να κα­
λύψει τό κόστος δημοσιεύσεων, άρθρων καί άλλου
διαφωτιστικοί> ύλικοϋ θα χρειαστεί τη βοήθεια δλων
που πιστεύουν ότι είναι έθνικό μας συμφέρον να ένι­
σχύσουμε τόν 'Αμερικανικό Φιλελληνισμό καί τον
·Ελληνικό Φιλοαμερικανισμό.

συμφωνείς, άγαπητέ Φίλε, δτι έπιβάλλεται
να ύπάρξει άντίλογος στήν άντιαμερικανικη έκ­

Dear Mr. Makrias,
The ΝΑΤΟ Allies should not be surprised by the strong objections expressed
by the Greek goνernment regarding the
installation of medium-range missiles on
Turkey's western region. The Turks have
repeatedly given evidence of their expansionist and imperialistic aspirations in
the Aegean and in Cyprus. Possession of
such weapons will merely strengthen
their aggressiveness and bellicosity.
Greece cannot possibly allow such a.shift
in the strategic balance of power between
the two countries.
The Greek objections are fully justified
and should be viewed in this context. The
ΝΑΤΟ Allies should also understand that
the objections voiced by the Greek delegation at the ΝΑΤΟ Council meeting in
Washington are supported by the entire
Greek nation without exception.
The case of the missiles dramatizes
once more the pressing need for
American and ΝΑΤΟ efforts to influence
Turkish thinking away from its present
aggressiνe path. There would be no problem .for the installation of the missiles- if
the ΝΑ ΤΟ partners consider the installation strategically important and necessary - without the obstacles raised by the
Turkish policies in Cyprus and in the
Aegean. These obstacles can be remoν­
ed; proνided Turkey comes to the negotiating table to forge " a fair and equitable
solution" (President Reagan) for Cyprus,
a solution that will serνe the interests of
the Cypriot people; and provided Turkey
acknowledges once and for all that the
political and strategic status in the Aegean
has long been determined by the treaties
signed in Lausanne in 1923. The United
States and the other ΝΑ ΤΟ partners
should realize that it is in the interest of
the Alliance to exert all the influence they
have to bring Turkey to the negotiating
table to resolve the current impasse on
Cyprus and to convince Turkey that any
change in the treaty-sanctioned status of
the Aegean is out of the question. Our
own diplomatic and "lobby" efforts
should focus on promoting such a policy
on the part of the United States and by
extension on the part of the other ΝΑΤΟ
partners.

Μέχρι τώρα, τό περισσότερο πού

μιά ή δύο περιπτώσεις γιά τήν έτή-
ρειος Υ Ηπειρος. 'Αλλά ύπι'jρχε περί­
πτερο γιά τήν Χιλι'j τού μαρξιστή
Άλλιέντε καi πορτραίτο τού~ Αρη
Βελουχιώτη. ΥΑλλο, πρόσφατο χα­
ρακτηριστικό δείγμα ιιπολιτιστικής
έκδήλωσης» aφορούσε τό ρεμπέ­
τικο τραγούδι τών χαμάληδων, τών
κουτσαβακιών καί τών χασισοπο­
τών/
Με τέτοιες έκδηλώσεις θά διατη­
ρηθι'j ή έλληνική γλώσσα καί ή έλ­
ληνικη ιικουλτούρα» στά 'Ελληνό­
πουλα τού έξωτερικού;
Κακώς ή 'Ομοσπονδία ζήτησε οl­
κονομικη ένfσχυση άπό τήν 'Ελλά­
δα. Πρόκειται γιά τήν πρώτη 'Ομο­
σπονδία πού έχασε τό dίσθημα τής
όξιοπρεπείας καί κατέβηκε ατό έπί­
πεδο αύτό. Πιστεύομε δτι καμμιά
άλλη όργάνωση θέλησε ή θά θελή·

ο Ολυμπιακούς τού Λός
λόγος πού έδωσαν οί Ρώσοι γιά τι'ιν άποχή τους όπό τούς

την 'Ελλάδα - πράγμα άλλωστε πού
μπορεί νά μή εfναι καί νόμιμο.
'Αποδεχομένη τό ποσό αύτό τής
iιένίσχυσης», - τό όποίο μάλιστα δi:ν
κρίνει καλό νά τό όναφέρη δπως
εχει ύποχρέωση - ή 'Ομοσπονδία
ντροπιάζει το σύνολο τών όρyανώ­
σεων καi τών ·Ομοσπονδιών μας.
Καθεμιά όπό αύτες έχει ατό ένεργη­
τικό της άμέτρητη σειρά δωρεών
ύπέρ κοινωφελών σκοπών στήν
'Ελλάδα. Υ Αλλες έκτισαν σχολεία,
άλλες νοσοκομεία, άλλες συνέβα­
λαν στήν κατασκευή δρόμων καί
συστημάτων ύδρεύσεως - καμμιό
δέν διανοήθηκε νά . .. ζητήση οίκο­
·νομική ένίσχυση άπό τήν πρώτη Πα­
τρίδα. VΟλες οί όργανώσεις μας
διαθέτουν άξιόλογα ταμεία καί μο­
ναδική φροντίδα δλων τών Διοικη­
τικών Συμβουλfων ποu διαθέτουν
εύπρέπεια καί φιλότιμο, εlναι πώς νά
βοηθήσουν τήν 'Ελλάδα - δχι nώς
θά όποσπάσουν χρηματικά ποσά
γιά τήν διάδοση τών Ιδεωδών τού
Βελουχιώτη,
τού
Άλλιέντε
καί
τών . .. Ιδανικών τών 'Ελλήνων χα­
σικλήδων .. .
Ή 'Ομοσπονδία 'Ελληνοαμερικα­
νικών Σωματείων Νέας 'Υόρκης έχει
όπό καιρό όπομονωθεί όπό τό σώ­
μα τής 'Ομογενείας. Δi:ν τήν aντι­
προσωπεύει. Με τήν οΙκονομική ένί­
σχυση πού έλαβε άπό τήν 'Ελλάδα,
ώλοκλήρωσε τήν άπομόνωσή
της
...
Κρεμλίνο εlναι τό ένδεχόμενο αΙτήσεως άσύλου άπό μεγάλο
άριθμό Ρώσων άθλητών, πρ(iγμα ποu θό δημιουργούσε ζω­
ηρΕ:ς έντυπώσεις μεταξύ 6χι μόνο τών χιλιάδων άθλητών,

την «άσφάλεια» τών άθλητών τους στJς ΗΠΑ, εΤναι, βεβαίως,
όφελέστατος καΙ δέν έπεισε καμμιά χώρα έκτός όπό τJς ύπό­
άλλά καi σ· όλόκληρο τόν κόσμο ποu θCι παρακολουθήση
δουλες στην Σοβιετικr'ι 'Ένωση. 'Εκείνο ποu φοβήθηκε τό

λυμπιακών εlναι έκεί ποu aρχισαν, στr)ν 'Ολυμπία. ΚαΙ ή
σχετικr) πρόταση Καραμανλή κερδίζει έδαφος σέ παγκόσμιο
έπlπεδο, όφού μόνο έτσι μπορεί νό διατηρηθή ό ώραίος
θεσμός.
Με τr'ιν έπιστολιJ αύτή, πού έστάλη σε πολλους όμογε­
νείς, στό πλαίσια μιάς έκστρατε ίας γιο τr)ν οίκονομική ένί­
σχυση τίjς 'Ακαδημίας, ή πρώτη έλληνικής καταγωγής κυρία
που έγινε μέλος τού Κογκρέσσου, ύπενθυμίζει δ τι καΙ ή 'ίδια
tφοίτησε έκεί. · Η μητέρα της πέθανε όπό καρκίνο δ ταν ή 'Ο­

Στο σχόλια πού γίνονται σχετικό με τr)ν όποχr) τής
Ρωσfας όπό τούς 'Ολυμπιακούς, πολύ εuστοχα παρετηρήθη
άπό έπιστολογράφους aμερικανικών καi aλλων περιοδικών,
δτι έχει καΙ την θετική της πλευρό ή άποχή αύτή: fιά πρώτη
φορά θό γίνουν οί όγώνες μεταξυ tρασιτεχνων όθλητών,
δπως τό 'Ολυμπιακό πνεύμα έπιβάλλει. ΟΙ Ρώσοι όθλητές
εlναι tπαyyελματίες. Δημόσιοι ύπάλληλοι πού μισθοδο­
τούνται όπό τό κράτος γιο νό aφιερώνουν δλες τ/ς ώρες τους
aτόν όθλητισμό - σε όντίθεση μέ δ, τι συμβαίνει στiς έλεύ­
θερες δυτικές χώρες.
'Αλλό καΙ aλλος λόγος δικαιώνει τό μποϋκοτόζ τού Προ­
έδρου Κάρτερ καΙ έπιβάλλει τόν άποκλεισμό τής Σοβιετικής
'Ενώσεως aπό τους 'Ολυμπιακούς. Τό γεγονός δτι βρίσκεται
σέ έμπόλεμη κατάσταση μέ τό 'Αφγανιστάν, τό όποίο τελεί
ύπό ρωσική κατοχή, χωρiς νό ύπολογίση κανε/ς τiςχώρες τής
'Ανατολικής Εύρώπης, πού στενάζουν καi αύτές ύπό τόν
σοβιετικό ζυγό . ..

σουν ρεκόρ άπό πλευράς συμμετοχής, άφού θά λάβουν
μέρος όθλητές όπό 142 χώρες- 20 περισσότερες aπό έκείνες
ποu έλαβαν μέρος στους Όλυμπιακοuς τού Μονάχου.
Μόνο 13 χώρες- δλες κομμουνιστικες- όπέχουν, έκτός άπό
τό ·Ιράν καΙ τήν ·Αλβανία πού εlχαν δηλώσει πρiν δτι δεν θό
λάβουν μέρος. Σέ όντίθεση με τό σοβιετικό μποϋκοτάζ, 55
χώρες δtν έστειλαν aθλητες στους Όλυμπιακοuς τής Μό­
σχας, τό 1982, όκολουθώντας τό παράδειγμα τής Άμερι­
κίjς, μετό τό μποϋκοτόζ ποu κήρυξε ό τότε Πρόεδρος
Κάρτερ σον παγκόσμια διαμαρτυρία γιο τr)ν εΙσβολή ατό
'Αφγανιστάν.

έκείνοι πού εlχαν την πρωτοβουλία γιό την'ίδρυση τών κομ­
ματικών έπιτροπών στr)v Άμερικr) καΙ τόν Καναδά.
'Εξηγώντας τόν λόγο πού ώδήγησε τr)ν Ν. Δημοκρατία
στην άπόφαση αύτή, ό ύπεύθυνος τού Κόμματος γιό τόν 'Α­
πόδημο 'Ελληνισμό, βουλευτης 'Αθηνών κ. Ν. 'Αναγνωστό­
πουλος, ε να άπό τό δημοφιλέστερα μέλη τίjς έλληνικής Βου­
λής, εlπε τό έξίjς, σέ συγκέντρωση ποu ώργάνωσαν ol φίλοι

καν στοuς δρόμους τόσα πολλό πονώ με συνθήματα τών
διαφόρων κομμάτων

Πολύτιμη βοήθε ια στίς επιχειρημα­
τικές του δραστηριότητες ό κ. · Αγκάθης
[λαβε, όπό τι']ν όρχή, όπό την σύζυγό
του Σοφία, που κατάγεται όπό τό Ρέ­
θυμνο, Κρήτης. Δυο γιοί τους σπουδά­
ζουν στό Κολλέγιο. ·Ο πρώτος, ό William, σπουδάζε ι δικηγόρος καί ό δεύ­
τερος, ό Μάϊκ, λογιστικό καί διοίκηση
επιχειρήσεως. τις έλεύθερες ώρες τους
έργάζονται κai of δυο ατό Γραφείο καί
στό μηχανουργείο τi'jς έταιρίας μέ
μ εγάλο ένδιαφέρον γιά τήν επι χείρηση.
'Ένας τρίτος γιός, ό Νίκος, εfναι 13 έτών.
Μέ 70 λεωφορεία καi 150 ύ παλλήλους,
ό κ. 'Αγκάθης [χει δημιουργήσει μιά
μεγάλη επ ιχε ίρηση μέ προοπτικές έπε­
κτάσεως, τόσο τών

Press Serνice during the recent North Atlantic Council Meeting in Washington D.C. we read that the Greek delegation

4. At the same time, the Soνiet Union engage in a masmilitary build-up. This poses a continuing threat to Alliance security and νital Western interests. The Soviet Union
has sought to exploit any apparent weakness which it has
perceiνed on the part of the Alliance. Further, Allied restraint has not been met with reciprocal restraint by the
Soνiets. Jnstead they haνe pursued a relentless campaign to
breach the solidarity of the Alliance. Soνiet willingness to
threaten or use military power for political ends has been
exemplified most notably in the inνasion of Afghanistan and
pressure on Poland.

Το these ends ("dialogue, cooperation and contacts at
all leνels on the full range of questions between East and
West") the Allies concerned will continue in particular: (ί) to
emphasize the readiness of the United States to resume
bilateral negotiations on lntermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) and Strategic Arms Reductions (STAR1) with the
Soνiet Union at any time without preconditions and to call
on the Soνiet Union to return to the negotiating table.
We are mystified. Why the reserνations? lf the text of the
ΝΑΤΟ communique had touched negatiνely on Greek
interests we could understand - in fact, we would have
expected the Greek delegation to object. But the two paragraphs simply stated the νiews of the Alliance on its relations
with the Soνiet bloc. The Greek reserνations serνed no useful
purpose. They merely helped intensify the mistrust of the
ΝΑΤΟ partners for the Greek role within the Alliance.
lt is wise, is it in the national Greek interest to alienate our
Allies - making them more dependent on Turkey, and thus
giνe Turkish prestige a boost and Turkish diplomacy our
unintended support?

memories. Forty years haνe passed since D-Day, the Allied

landing on the beaches of Normandy. Thosewhowere born in
1944 are already entering middle age. For many who are now
twenty or thirty years old, the eνents of D-Day are ancient
history. Yet the outcome of the historic inνasion and the sacrifices of those who fought in the War haνe shaped our world
today. Because if the land ing had fa iled, th e War might have
ended with a Nazi νictory or a Soνiet conquest of the entire
continent of Europe. Those who lived under the Nazis can
imagine life in a Nazi-controlled Europe. The people in Eastern
Europe do not need to imagine life under Soνiet control. lt is
their daily reality.
But this anniνersary should also remind us how this
country behaνed not only in war but, more importantly, in
νictory. Those who call the U.S. an " imperialist" power do not
wish to remember that this country did not conquer any
territory, did not enslaνe any people. The United States
emerged at the end of the war not only νictorious but the only
true superpower in the world. Yet, the United States brought
its soldiers back home and helped eνe n its former enemies get
back on their feet. Confronted with a Soνiet Union which
imposed its control oνer the countries of Eastern Europe and
was trying to exploit the harsh postwar conditions in Western
Europe, the United States helped the free countries of W.
Europe to form ΝΑΤΟ, a d e f e n s i ν e alliance, threatening
no one, truly dedicated to the preserνation of peace. And the
peace has been preserνed on the continent of Europe.
Forty years ago, President Franklin Delano Rooseνelt
declared that the war aim of America was to help people liνe
free. America has kept the promise. The only part of Europe
that remains in bondage is the part controlled by the Soviet
Union and the Communist regimes of Poland, Czechoslovakia,
Hungary, Bulgaria and Romania - the countries where the
people are not eνen allowed to try for "Change" .

proposal of the President of the Greek Republic C. Karamanlis to have the Olympic Games permanently in
Greece receiνed oνerwhelming support in the European
Parliament. All those who spoke expressed t~1e hope that the
lnternational Olympic Committee and the member countries
will moνe as soon as possible to adopt th is proposal. The
European Parliament approνed also the proposal to
"transform" the area of ancient Olympia in the Peloponnesus
into a " neutral zone", as the permanent site for the Olympic

Games.
President Reagan, too, in a recent teleνised address spoke
faνorably of the idea to haνe Greece, the ancient birthplace of
the Games, as the permanent site of the Olympics.
We hope that the idea will become reality; because it is aπ
eminently sensible idea. The ancient Olympics were not
moνed around from one city-state to another eνery four years.
They were always held in Olympia. ln our modern world,
diνided as it is by riνal ideologies, conflicting interests, legitimate of malicious grieνances, by all kinds of disputes, the
practice of moνing the Olympics from one country to another
threatens the νery existence of this noble institution. ιt is time
to take the one step that has a real chance to saνe the Olympic
Games from the destructiνe contamination of political riνal­
ries.
GREEK TRAGEDY

following is an editorial in the Washington τimesjune 7, 1984)
Ν May 22 Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou of Greece
was interνiewed on ABC-TV's Nightline about a nuclear
disarmament appeal he had just signed, along with such other
progressiνe worthies as Sweden's Olof Palme, ιndia's lndira
Gandhi, Mexico's Miguel de la Madrid, Tanzania's Ju lius
Nyerere, and Argentina's Raul Alfonsin.
Mr. Papandreou told Ted Koppel he was not hopeful the
superpowers would heed the appeal. Ί wish ι could be optimistic," he said. "But ι doo't think that those who haνe the
future of the world in their hands are quite aware themselνes
of what the future holds for all of us, including them."
One has come to expect such wiser-than-thou
preachments from the likes of ιndira Gandhi, who could not
bring herself to condemn the Soνiet inνasion of Afghanistan.
But Greece is a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. lt was to saνe Greece from the Soνiet-backed communist
guerrillas that Harry Truman enunciated the Truman Doctrine
in 1947.
ιn his TV appearance, Mr. Papandreou tried to appear
eνen-handed in rebuking the nuclear superpowers. Τοο bad
Mr. Koppel didn't ask him to explain the statement he made 12
days earlier: ''τhe Soνiet Union's fight for detente is genuine,"
said Mr. Papandreou then. ''τhe U.S.S.R. cannot be cal led an
imperialist power like the United States. lt is a force against
ο
imperialism and capitalism."
lf that is the νiew of Mr. Papandreou's goνernment, why
does it want to remain in ΝΑΤΟ? Perhaps Greece should take
Poland's place in the Warsaw Pact. Then Poland, unhappy as a
Kremlin satrapy, could replace Greece as a member of ΝΑΤΟ.
ιf the Greek people don't like the idea, they haνe - as Rep.
John Ε. Porter, R-ιΙΙ., has · pointed out- an alternatiνe : theycan
elect a leader "committed to the foundations upon which the
greatness of Greece was erected." ιf they fail· to do so, the
other ΝΑΤΟ powers ought to consider expelling this strange
bedfellow from the alliance.

AST December, Mr. Aνerof, in order to aνoid a public
oνer the way the Greek prime minister Mr. Α. Papandreou was handling the Cypriot crisis after the declaration of
unilateral independence, wrote a letter to the prime minister
presenting his νiews. Mr. Papandreou replied a few days later
and this was followed by another letter from Aνerof, a reply
from Papandreou, and a closing letter from Aνerof. The letters
were designated as "top secret". They were made public by
the Greek prime m.i nister a few days ago. Allegedly, Mr. Papandreou wanted to proνe that Mr. Aνerof adνocated a policy of
"capitυlation". We giνe below experts from this correspondence, so our readers can form their own opinion .
" .. . ι am of the opinion that your objective should not be
how to bring about the revocation of the Denktash pseudostate. Your objectiνe should be how to abolish it permanently
and how to establish the independence and integrity of
Cyprus. Α tolerable system of administration can be found. lf
we waste time and opportunities, in order to achieνe
temporary and minor benefits, we will lose permanently the
northern part of the island and at the same time we will
mortgage heaνily the fate of the southern part ... This issue
which is major for us will be forgotten internationally within a
short period of time. τime is not working for us and the time
left is too short . .. "

Successor to
Tavoulareas
LOS ANGELES - Mobil Corp. said that
Allen Ε. Murray will become president
and chief operating officer in Noνember
upon the retirement of William Ρ. Taνou­
lareas, which was preνiously announced.
Mobil hinted than a year ago that Mr.
Murray would succeed Mr. Taνoulareas
when Mr. Murray was named president
of Mobil Oi l Corp., Mobils's largest subsidiary.
Mobil said Mr. Taνou lareas will retire
Νον. 1, eight days before his 65th
birthday, but will remain a director of the
company and a member of its executiνe
committee. He also wi ll continue to act as
an adνiser to top management, particularly on operations in the Middle East.
During his 15 years running the
company, Mr. Taνoulareas has formed
close ties with Saudi Arabia's royal family,
which has helped assure Mobil of ready
access to Middle East oil supplies.
His νiew that the company should
increase its affiliation with the Saudis,
coupled with his unorthodox personal
style, has made him something of a
maνerick in the U.S. oil industry.
Howeνer, analysts do not expect many
changes in the company's course when
Mr. Murray takes the post of president.
Turkish Cypriot Move
called 'Unhelpful'
WASHINGTON, June 4 (Reuters)- The
United States said today that Turkish
Cypriots had been allowed to settle in an
uninhabited area of Famagusta and called
the action " unhelpful" to finding a solut ion of the Cyprus dispute.
The Famagusta suburb of Varosha was
formerly inhabited by Greek Cypriots,
but it has been deserted since Turkey invaded the island in 1974.
The State Department spokesman, Alan
Romberg, said the United States had
eνidence that the Turkish Cypriots were
allowing some of their people into the
suburb of the resort town.
''τhe settlement by Turkish Cypriots in
the area establishes a precedent which we
be lieve will proνe unhelpful to the search
for a fair and final settlement to the
Cyprus question," Mr. Romberg said.

Cyprus: The Need for Negotiations (11)
Cyprus is certainly the victim of Turkish
machinations and expansionist ambitions. But it is also necessary to recogn ize
that it has been the victim of misguided
patriotism. For thirty five years an almost
unbroken patern has marked our
policies. The "patriots" press for unattainable solutions, the "realists" remain
silent for fear that they may be attacked as
being "unpatriotic'Ό And so we move
from one blunder to the next. We pile up
U.N. resolutions and the Turks take oνer
solid gro und. We have become a prime
example of the dictum that "those who
do not learn from their past mistakes are
condemned to repeat them."
Ι write these lines knowing full well that
the "patriots" will recoil with indignation. But I hope the real patriots, those
who really care, will read them with an
open mind. The record which we want to
forget is a relentless witness to our many
mistakes. Space allows references only to
the most dramatic errors. ln between,
however, we can identify a myriad of
smaller blunders and miscalculations
made always in the name of patriotism.
ln the 1950s we launched the campaign
for "self-determination" which at that
time meant - as eνery one knew- Enosis.
We went to the United Nations and we
sought the support of the Soviet Union
without even taking into account that
"self-determination/Enosis" meant the
union of the island with Greece and thus
the extension of ΝΑΤΟ control further
into the Eastern Mediterranean- certain-

ly not a Soviet aim! The ΝΑΤΟ countries
were the on ly g roup of states in the U.N.
with a pragmatic interest to support "selfdetermination/Enosis'Ό But we lost this
support since we were in conflict with
Britain. At that time we also rejected the
British-suggested "Radcliff Constitution"
- which, within a few years, would have
resulted in a free Greek Cyprus - only
because to accept it, would have been
"unpatriotic" and a betrayal to the
struggle of "self determination'Ό
Karamanlis and Averoff eventually
mustered enough courage to ignore the
critics and the "superpatriots" and sign
the Zurich Agreements which created an
independent and Greek-dominated
Republic of Cyprus. But as soon as Karamanlis fell from office in 1963 the opponents of the Zurich agreements moved to
change the arrangements, not realizing
that the " reopening of the case" favoreό
Turkey which in 1960 had accepted the
Republic of Cyprus as a final settlement of
the issue. The excuses presented at the
time about the legislative proνocations of
the Turk Cypriors cannot concea l the fact
these minor irritants were a small price to
pay in order to keep the constitutional
arrangements intact and inviolate. After
1964, without taking into account the
factor ''τurkey" we kept the Turk
Cypriots for ten years into the "enc laves'Ό

declaration of the pseudostate, M r. Papandreou ca lled for a return to "the 1960
Agreements" conveniently ignoring that
for years the opposition had condemned
those agreements are "treasonable".)
Then in 1974, a g a ί n s t Α m e r ί c a n
strong objections, another
"superpatriot", the dictator loannides
tried to overthrow Makarios and presumably consolidate Greek control on the
island. He did so although he knew that
Cyprus was virtually defenseless and that
the Greek army was in poor shape after
the embargo on military aid imposed in
1971 . His abysmal blunder .opened the
door for the first Turkish inνasion. Eνen
so, the initial invasion was confined to a
very small bridgehead around the city of
Kyrenia. The real disaster ca me on August
15 with the launching of the second Attila.
Few seem to remember that there was a
conference going on in Geneva at the
time.
The record is no longer secret. The
Turks asked for a commitment that the
constitution of 1960 would be replaced by
a "federal state" with a Greek and a
Turkish district. We rejected this although the British who were participating in the conference advised us to agree
and although they - together with the
Americans - assumed the obligation to
press Turkey to accept 22 percent of the
island for the Turkish district; (at the time
the Turkish army occupied less than 5
percent). Th e Greek foreign minister G.
Mavros with patriotic fervor - and with
comp lete disregard for the mil itary realities - replied that "Greece does not
surrender to blackmail". Gunes, the
Turkish foreign minister, folded his
papers and walked out of the conference.
An hour later, the Turkish forces
launched Attila 11. 200,000 Greek Cypriots
lost their homes and came as refugees to
the southern part of the island, while
almost 40 percent of Cyprus came under
Turkish occupation. ln the following
years we accepted the "federal state"
concept we had rejected in 1974! And
now ever a thirty percent portion for the
Turkish district would require a "concession " from the 40 percent occupied by
the Turkish army.
ln the summer of 1983, when the U.N.
Secretary General undertook a serious
initiative to break the impasse, President
Kyprianou was forced by the Greek
premier to derail the process- as revealed
by the then Cypriot foreign minister
Rolandis who resigned in protest.
Denktash took advantage of the

impasse and declared the unilateral independence of the Turkίsh-occupίed
regίon . Ηίs actίon met word-wίde oppositίon. lt became a diplomatίc dίsaster for
Turkey. But instead of takίng adνantage of
this, what did we do~ When the Brίtίsh
prime minister Mrs. Thatcher proposed
to Mr. Kyprianou a conference of all
parties to find a solution - a suggestion
Kyprianou appeared to accept - the
Greek premier rejected the proposal and
called Mr. Kyprianou to order, as though
he were a misbehaνing pupil. The
moment to take adνantage of a diplomatic opportunity, when the " iron was hot",
was lost.
Α few months later, when Denktash
proposed to return to Greek control
Famagusta and the Nicosia airport our
superpatriots rejected the offer with
derision. They eνen attacked President
Reagan for saying that he found the offer
a step in the right direction. Weeks later
we were asking for what we had
preνiously rejected!

At the present time, Presίdent Kyprianou has presented to U.N. Secretary
General a comprehensiνe plan. lt is an
eminently sensible and realistic plan. We
should haνe made it the center of our
diplomatic efforts. We should haνe
pressed the American goνernment to
embrace it at least as a basis for discussion
and to make eνery effort to persuade the
Turks to come to the negotiating table.
lnstead, we squander our ίnfluence
and strength pressing Congress to impose
some sort of " punishment" o n Turkey forgetting that another "punishment"
(the embargo) in 1975-78 had no effect. ln
the meantime we seem to remain
obliνious to the fact that the Turks are in
possession of almost 40 percent of the
island and that it is in our interest to.bring
them to the negotiating table as soon as
possible - and without squabbling oνer
the titles of the participants or the shape
of the table. Any agreement, if it is "fair
and equitable and acceptable to both
sides" - to quote President Reagan in his
recent offer proνiding for $250 million if
such a settlement were reached - will be
in our faνor, because there is nothing we
can giνe up; there is nothing left to giνe. lt
is the Turkish side that wi ll haνe to make
" concessions" because it is the Turkish
side that holds much more than it can
eνer be entitled to under a "fai r and
equitable and mutually acceptable"
settlement.
lt stands to reason that the thrust of our
diplomacy - in Washington and
elsewhere- should be to press for negotiations. And to press for American
support so that the negotiations will
produce the "fair and equitable and
mutually acceptable" solution of which
the American president spoke only a few
days ago. Only self-delusion will preνent
us from seeing that time is on the side of
the Turks.

The Ceremonial Sword of lannis Xenakis

IANNIS XENAKIS has recently been
elected to the French Academy. The
ceremony of h is admission will take place
on May 2nd, 1984, while the President of
the Universities of Paris, Mrs. Helene
Ahrweiler, will present him with his
ceremonial sword. According to a tradition going almost two centuries back, eac
member of the Academy carries a sword
to show that he is prepared to defend
Science, Art and Ciνi l ization. The design
of each sword differs so as to be an
adequate expression of the work, the
philosophy the way of life of its owner.
Το design such a sword is obνiously not
an easy task. This relatiνely small object
and in particular the hilt should be made
to express complex and sophisticated
spiritual νalues. The owner should be
made to feel that on a surface of a few
sq uare inches haνe been compressed all
his efforts, ideas and ambitions of a
lifeti me.
Our workshop may haνe succeeded in
this task on preνio u s occasions, as in the
case of the archaeologist Prof. Pierre
Amandry, or of the classical scholar Mrs.
Jacq ueline De Romilly~ or of the philo-

sopher Μ. Raymond Polin. When itcame,
however, to design the sword for the
Greek architect-composer-philosopher
lannis Xenakis, our problem became
eνen more dema ndίng. After all, Xenakίs
i s a comp l ex and multi-faceted
personality, a th ίnker wίth roots extending from the Presocratics to Byzantine
monasticism and to Zen Bouddhism.
Fortuna.tely he was ready to help not
only with his skill in drawing, but also by
being aνailable for repeated exchanges of
νίews and friendly d ί scussions about the
design, the material and the techniques
to be used.
He accepted our choice of rock crystal
as the basic materia l for the hilt and the
pommel of the sword. Α difficult and
fragile material, especί ally when shapίng
a νolu minous pίece, as in this case, of
18cm in length and 4cm in diameter for
the hίlt and 8cm for the pommel. Rock
crustal is, neνerthel ess, a material expressing adequately the classίcal style of
Xenakis' art, always in search for a simple,
intelligible yet νigorous expression
making use of its means.
At the same time rock crystal is the
material which par excellence giνes life to
eνery ray of lίght ίt reflects, playing
lumίnous νar iatίons such as the ones
Xenakίs has used ίn many of his works. On
the transparent cylindrίcal su rface of the
hilt a design of fine gold wίre brίngs to
mind the " luminescent spectacles" of Xenakis and the laser beans which the composer-architect so masterfully uses.
On the top of the pommel we see a
galaxy designed by Xenakίs. ln its centre
there ίs a lapis lazuli, wh ίle ίts elegant gold
spirals recall the words often used by
Xenakis hίmself : "spίral moνement " ind i catίng the temporal sequence of eνe n ts
wίthin space. Th e consta nt eνolutίon ί n­
sίde the unίνerse, as expressed by Heraclitos, ίs a subject constantly preoccupyίng Xenakίs' thought.
An infinite Minoan fret in 22Κ gold
fixed on a fine blade separates the
pommel from the hilt. lts endless moνe­
ment is ί n a way related to the ce ntral
theme of Xenakίs concerning structures
"ίnside" and 'Όutside" tίme.
Xenakis is a man whose work combίnes
musίc and architecture, sί nce he consίders the one as the extension of the
other. He has his νery own way of
"writίng". He gaνe us a sample of his
"wrίti ng", a linear drawing which shows
the equ ίvale nce between the musical
glίssandί, as wrίtten e.g. for the strίngs ίn
"Metastasis", and t h e geom etrica l
straίght lines which he used as t he basίs
for the constructίon of the Philips Paνil ion
at the Brussels lnternatίonal Fa ίr. O ur
craftsmen have reproduced th ίs writing in
fine gold threads, fixed around the hίlt
and attached to ίts base by the use of the
wire and · granulations technique, as
taught by the ancient master-goldsmiths
of Verg hίna.
lannίs Xenakίs ίs a great admirer of the
\.1inoan ciνίlization. Η ί s sword recalls a
Minoan sword found in Mycenaean tomb
around 1500 B.C. He chose himself a
blade w hich is a Roman repl ίca of a
Minoan sword. The tίme-worn metal of
the blade stands in contrast to the brί l­
liance of the rock-crystal and the dainty
gold-work, yet old and new elements
combίne harmoniously. This migh be
another way of expressίng that i n Xenakίs'
work one fίnds νarious elements "diverse
yet unίted , manίfo l d yet homogeneous,
creating at the same time pa rtίcu larίt i es
and unity."

Torture Turkish Style

''τorture in the Eighties" is a 263-page
report that Amnesty lnternational
published in early April. ln the past
~onth, I haνe been reading it haltingly,
ιncredulously. I know of no other way to
go through a book that tells, country after
country, how political prisoners of
conscience are tortured by nearly 100
goνernments.
The barbarous punishments reνeal that
since the last Amnesty report on
torture- 1973-an anatomical sophistication has occurred. The fashion now is to
torture inside the body as well as outside.
ln Syria, there is the " Biack Slaνe", an
electrical deνice that jams a heated metal
skewer into the νictims anus.ln the Soνiet
Union, pain-causing drugs such as ha loperidol are injected into prisoner's veins.
As characteristically thorough as the
new Amnesty report is, the full story is not
told. Families of prisoners also endure an
agony, their soul· and emotions brutalized by worry about children or parents
or brothers or sisters.
Whi le reading the Amnesty report, Ι
came to know the story of one family's
ordeal when I met Nursat Aygen . Her
anguish concerns the fate of her sister in a
Turkish prison, but her torment is shared
by fami lies of prisoners in eνery one of
the countries in the Amnesty report.
Nursat Aygen, 29, a natiνe of lstanbul, is
a summa cum laude graduate of Sweet
Briar College in Virginia and currently is
an economist in New York City. She is a
naturally ebullient woman whose
hopeful outlook on life is light years away
from the galaxies of gloom that is Turkey
under martial law.
l n March 1981, Nursat Aygen's younger
sister, Gu lsat, was carted oft to prison. She
was indicted more than a year later for
belonging to aπ illegal organization. After
three years of imprisonment and torture,
no conνiction has occurred. ln July 1983,
Gulsat Aygen was one of 2,000 inmates in
lstanbul prisons who went on a 29-day
hunger strike to protest, among other
abuses, torture and limited access to
lawyers.
Amnesty lnternational later reported
that, 'Άithough promises were made by
the prison authorities to the hunger-striking prisoners of some improνement in
prison conditions, no improνements haνe
yet taken place. Beati ngs of prisoners are
still reported to continue in Metris
military prison." Gulsat Aygen is currently
held in Metris prison and is part of
another hunger strike which began on
April 11. The number of political
prisoners in Turkey ranges from a low
estimate o f 21 ,000 to as many as 100,000.
The excruciating choice for Nursat
Aygen is one that all prisoners' families
face: what is the most effectice approach
to stop the torture, first, and then win
release of the loνed one~ Jacobo
Timerman, who once suffered under
Argentina's gen eral s what Turkish
political prisoners are suffering under
their generals, was asked this question.
He replied, ''τ ry to find ways to exert
political pressure to change things. lt' s

the impressiνe signature of Xenakis with
the Greek initials of the composer.
Seνeral years ago Andre Malraux had
told me that he considered Xenakis as
the greatest composer of our century.
Getting to know him closer has confirmed
me in this belief. lt has also shown to me
that he has remained a Greek in soul and
tongue. lt is characteristic that most of the
titles of his works are Greek words or
words created by him from Greek roots.
Cooperating with him was for me not
only a wonderful professional experience, but also a unique intellectual
delight.

Nursat Aygen would return home to try
to saνe the life of her sister but she knows
that under martial law (which ru les most
of Turkey) subνersion charges would be
cooked up against her. lnstead, with a mix
of prudence and braνery, she went to the
Turkish Embassy to fi le a complaint. She
spoke with the embassy's Νο. 2 official.
lt might well haνe been at the Embassy
of Chile, China or some other goνern­
ment that bel ieνes in torturing dissenters.
The Turkish official, at times kind ly
toward Nursat Aygen and other times
insulting to the point of questioning her
honesty, took the predictable line that
national security is improνed with martial
law against subνersiνes. But Gulsat Aygen
hasn't been conνicted of anything, he was
reminded. ' Ύet," he replied chillingly.
Nursat Aygen, like so many others who
confront torturing regimes, came away
from the embassy fee ling as t hough her
ideals for justice were assaulted. One
comfort came from being befriended by
Rep. Robert Torricelli (0-N.J.), who, as a
member of the House Foreign Affairs
Committee, νisited Turkey last January.
Torricelli is currently inνestigating the
case of Gulsat Aygen and the other
prisoners on the hunger strike. Whateνer
the congressman is told by the embassy,
he will be learning something on May 8
when Amnesty lnternational begins a
new bimonthly series ca lled "File on
Torture." The first country is Turkey.

Banking and the Greek Economy

The following are excerpts from a speech by Mr. Stelios Panagopoulos, the
Governor of the National Bank of Greece, at the Propeller Club in Greece, on April
25th. His topic was Banking and the Greek Economy.:
"Νο doubt, the unsatisfactory
economic performance over the last ten
years is largely responsible for the considerable strains now plaguing the
banking community in Greece. However,
we all recognize, that, while history is
written backwards, we have to live
forward and it is with the future we are
mainly concerned. Therefore, in my
remarks today, I would like to take the
liberty of focusing not only on the present
acute difficulties and how to confront
them, but also on the question of how we
can safeguard the actions of today, but
from becoming the problems of
tomorrow.
The recent conjuctural difficulties of
the Greek economy were, of course,
hardly conducive to creating a favourable
operational framework for the
commercial banking sector. At the same
time, the Banks are faced by a number of
pressing problems which have emerged
due to many heavily indebted firms. For
the banks, such a situation was
tantamount to working under a heavy
burden of non-performing loans; with
corrosive consequences on their profitability and liquidity, not to mention the
disruptive impact on the smooth
functioning of the credit system as a
whole.
On the other hand, many of these
heaνily indebted firms comprise a significant part of the structure of the
country's industrial base and, as a result,
no solution to their problem could haνe
far-reaching social and economic repercussions.
Despite the fact that the problematic
firms issue made the headlines recently, it
would be wrong to restrict its causes only
within the framework of the recent
international and domestic economic
developments. The truth is, that it is a
problem deeply rooted in the past and
inextricably interwined with the
structural weaknesses of the country's
whole postwar industrialization process.
As was to be expected, those weaknesses
remained well masked behind the
prosperous international economic
environment of the 1960's, but eventually
they were unfolded and thrust to the
surface by the economic upheaval
following the two oil shocks of the 1970's.
The rest of the story is well known; a large
number of manufacturing firms and even
entire industrial sectors lost ground and
gradually found themselves in their
present financial impasse.
Qf. course, Ι do not see it as my task
today to engage in a thorough analysis of
all the factors responsible for this
situation. lnstead, I would find it instructiνe to focus on only some outstanding

structural legacies of the past which,
think, d eserve particular attention.
Το begin with, it is a fact that in the
manufacturing sector a disproportionatel y strong impulse for growth came from
the so-called "traditional industries".
However, what must be emphasized
here, is that these developements continued to take place at a time when, due
to internal and external factors, the comparative advantages of the country were
already shifting towards other more technologicall y advanced manufacturing
activities.

the trends of the markets were changing
as well, but the Greek industry did not
adapt. Consequently, it is not surprising
that it paid dearly for it later on, in terms
of severe losses in its competitive edge,
both at home and abroad. Το be fair, not
only the industrialists but also a shortsighted economic policy should be
equally blamed for this self-defeating
industrialization process.
Another serious structural element of
the ailing industries problem is to be
found in a number of serious deficiencies
inherent in the country's credit system.
Here, the responsibility seems, to a
considerable degree, to lie with the
policies by which the monetary authorities attempted to effect a sectoral redistribution of the availability of credit
according to their developmental priorities. These policies set up a highly
complex and sophisticated system of
qualitative credit controls and regulations concerning the level and the
structure of the interest rates. However, it
must be pointed out that the complexity
and the lack of the necessary elasticity

and adaptability of the system to the
changing economic conditions, were
factors hardly conduciνe to the success of
its goals. As a result, not only was its
effectiνeness drastically reduced, but on
the contrary it had a number of debilitating side-effects. Νο doubt, against such a
background, the flexibility of the commercial banks concerning their portfolio
policies was adνersely affected. On the
other hand, this system caused serious
distortions in the allocative function of
the credit market paνing the way for the
oνerborrowing of manufacturing firms
and the leakage of significant amount of
funds to other actiνities.

confirmed to keeping up the supply of
the necessary cred it flows; a set of
measures was also adopted to facilitate
the capital restructuring of the firms concerned on a sounder basis and at a lower
debt-servicing cost. These measures
included the conversion to equity of a
large amount of debt liabilities and the rescheduling of the rest of them on a longterm maturity basis.
The rationale underlying this policy is
to keep the viable units alive until "the
tide of the economic recovery floats the
νessel off the rock". At th is point, I would
like to take the opportunity of stressing
that up to now, it is ma inly the National
Bank of Greece that has been shouldering
the brunt of the ailing firms' burden. But
the Bank's leeway in continuing its
rescuing operations, alone, is indeed
growing t h in; and the help of the State is
now more than eνer νery much needed .
Now, on the question of preνenting the
recurrence of the same problems in the
future, it is our νiew that the banks must
first draw on their past experience in
order to avoid repeating the same
mistakes. With this in mind, we are
applying a new concept in the ranking of
our lending criteria by shifting the
emphasis from asset-based financing to
the νiability, growth potential of the
firms, as well as their managerial profile.
Furthermore, we are paying a great deal
of attention to deνe loping an effectiνe
follow-up and a closer monitoring of the
loans granted in order to preνent
undesirable leakages to speculatiνe actiν­
ities and to secure the normal recycling of
credit flows.

too. Α noteworthy gain stemming from
this decentralization is the shortening, by
about 70%, of the time needed for
approνing and granting a loan.
Earlier on in my speech, I tried to point
out the need for co-operation between
the State and Banks on the issue of the
ailing industries. Needless to say, we do
not see the State's role ending there.
Besides paνing the ground for a
sustainable economic recoνery, it is imperatiνe that the whole plethora of credit
rules and regulations should be ree νaluated in the light of the νast
experience of the past, with a νiew to
phasing out their undesirable economic
and financial side-effects.
Mr. President, Ladies and Gentlemen,
I do not think that there should be any
disagreement as to the challenging situation facing our banking system and the
Greek Economy in general. On the one
hand, we haνe to transform our cyclical
losses and the structural legacies of the
past into a long term economic growth ,
whi le on the other, we must not fa ll

Last, but not least, the picture of our
lending strategy would be incomplete if
we did not recognize the role of the small
and medium sized businesses, in broadening the country's industrial base and
reνiνing its business νitality. The special
weight the Bank attaches to the promotion of these firms is widely reflected in
the considerable increase that has
occured over the last two years in the
Bank' s overall ba lance of credit to
handicraft.
Ι am conνinced that our policy will
proνe beneficial in many ways both to the
Bank itself, and also to the national
economy in general. There, its auspicious
repercussions are not only to be confined
to the smooth functioning of the credit
market, but they go beyond and extend,
through the support of dynamic business
units, to forging those microeconomic
forces that in the long run will steer the
economy to higher and more robust rates
of growth.
Howeνer, we fully recognize that all
our efforts would be doomed to failure
behind the new tech nology race now in
full swing.
lt is for the success of these tasks that we
should all combine our efforts, showing
firm determination and the maximum
possible adaptability and flexibility. We
need internationally competitiνe industries; we also need the birth of new
industries but it is impossible to enνisage
any successful moνement in these directions without a major contribution
from a sound financial system and an
efficient banking industry.l hopewith my
comments so far to haνe made clear
enough the unique and leading role
performed by the National Bank of
Greece in enhancing that contribution
and spearheading the efforts for a secure
financial system and a substantial economic recoνery.

William G. Chirgotis Donates
St. Basil's Memorial Chapel
Construction has begun for the
erection of the St. Basil 's Memorial
Chapel in Garrison, Ν.Υ. to replace the
original structure that was completely
destroyed by fire early last year.
Designed by Architect William G. Chirgotis, the building includes a carillon
tower and has a choice of exterior
building materials that is consistent and
compatible to the surrounding Ahepa
School and Dormitory Buildings, which
will compliment the hilltop woodland
setting that oνerlooks the Hudson Riνe r
νalley.
The construction contract in excess of
$300,000.00 has been awarded by the
Architect, to William Manfredi of Poughkeepsie, Ν.Υ., who recently completed
the construction of the new Ahepa Dormitories and renoνated the Ahepa School
Building at St. Basil's.
The Chapel will be a memorial gift by
the nationally known architect, commemorating the memory of his parents,
the late "Kyparisia and George Chirgotis", in gratitude of the νalues receiνed
from them; - and as evidence of his Ιονe
for theyoung and deνotion to his Church.

Country Lamb
40 2 " cubes of lamb/ beef or
combination
4 small onions, chopped very fine
3 cloves garlic, chopped very fine
1/ 2 cup of parsley, chopped
1/ 2 tsp. oregano
3 bayleaves
1 cup of burgundy wine
2 tbsps. corn starch
1 pkg. frozen peas and caπots
(thawed)
1 pkg. frozen pearl onions
(thawed)
1 lb. of feta cheese (crumbled)
16 fillo leaves
yields 8 portions
Saute chopped onions and garlic in
butter or olive oil. Add meaι allowing to
brown. Add pars\ey, bay ·leaves, salt
and pepper to taste, and wine. Let
simmer lor about 35 minutes.
Thicken gravy with com starch. Ι!
more liquid is needed, mix the corn
starch with 1 cup οΙ beel broth Set
aside to cool.
Butter tops οΙ 2 strudel leaves and
place one on top of the other. Fold
bottom end up about 2 inches. Place
five pieces of meat with mixture on this
apron. Add 2 generous tablespoons of
vegetables, 3-4 pearl onions αnd 2
tablespoons of cheese on top of meaι
Fold \eft side towa rd center and right
side toward the le ft and ro\1. Brush with
melted butteroroil, sprinklewith water.
Poke a few holes on top with a fork.
Place in buttered pan. Bake in 3250
oven for 45 min. to 1 hour.
Broccoli Egg Pie
2 packages defrosted broccoli
4 sheets fillo
1/ 4 cup butter, melted
3 / 4 cup soft bread crumbs
2 tbsps. grated romano or
parmesan cheese
4 eggs
1 cup sour cream
salt, pepper to taste
Preheat oven to 450J. Use rectangular pan 10χ13χ2 inches. Butter one
sheet of fillo, p\ace in pan, folded to fit.
Repeat with remaining sheets. Place in
oven and bake for 15 minutes, being
careful not to bum . Remove from oven,
lower heat to 35CYJ. Drain broccoli well,
squeeze excess moisture. Add salt and
pepper to taste. Spread over pastry.
With back of tablespoon make
indentations in each comer. Break
eggs into each of the hollows and cover
with sour cream. Toss cheese, crumbs
and remaining butter togethe r and
sprinkle over the top of the pie. Retum
to oven and bake until the eggs are set
(about 15 minutes longer). Serve
immediately.
Clam Pitas
3 7 1/2 oz. cans minced clams
3 tbsp. minced parsley
1 tbsp. butter
1/ 4 tsp. garlic powder
1/ 2 tsp. worcestershire sauce
1112 tbsps. flour
6 fillo sheets
1/ 4 cup bread crumbs
6 tbsps. butter, melted
Drain clams, reserving liquid from
one can. Saute parsley in butter a few
minutes. Remove from heat and blend
in flour and g radual\y stir in clam broth.
Add garlic powder, worcestershire
sauce and clams. Cook until thick. Cut
fillo in quarters lengthwise. Use two
strips for each serving, brushing lightly
with butter and sprinkling with bread
crumbs. Put tablespoon of filling onto
fillo, fold sides toward center and roll
up. Placeon shallow baking pan. Butter
Mushroom Rolls
1/ 2 lb. mushrooms
onion, chopped fine
spήg of Paτsley, chopped
juice of a lemon
salt, pepper to taste
7 strudelleaves
Saute onion and parsley until brown.
Cut mushrooms to small pieces and
add with salι pepper and lemon juice
for about 3-4 minutes or until golden
brown.
Cut strude l leaves for rolls or
triangles. Spoon on ingredients and
place in 3500 oven {preheated) for
about 15 minutes or until golden
brown.
