Μητσοτάκη σάν ήγέτη τού Κόμ­
ματος τι'jς Άξιωματικι'jς Άντιπολι­
τεύσεως, άποτελεί βαρυσήμαντο
πολιτικό γεγονός, πού θά έχη
άμεσες και μακροπρόθεσμες έπι­
δράσεις στήν πολιτική ζωή καΙ τό
μέλλον τι'jς χώρας.
Γιά μάς τούς Έλληνοαμερικα­
νούς. ή tκλογή τού κ. Μητσοτάκη
δtν εχει τήν ίδια σημασία πού τής
άποδίδει fνας όπαδός τής «Νέας Δη­
μοκρατίας», ή ένας τού ΠΑ.ΣΟ.Κ., ή
δποιουδήποτε
άλλου έλληνικού
κόμματος. Περισσότερο μάς tνδια­
φέρει ό κ. Μητσοτάκης γιa τήν έξω­
τερική πολιτική πού θά άκολουθή­
ση άνερχόμενος στι)ν έξουσία, σάν
διάδοχος τού κ. 'Ανδρέα Παπαν­
δρέου.
Ό διακεκριμένος Κρητικός πολι­
τικός, πιστεύει δτι ή θέση τής •Ελ­
λάδος εΤναι μt τόν Δυτικό Κόσμο,
στι)ν Εύρωπαϊκή 'Αγορά καΙ στήν
Άτλαντικι) Συμμαχfα. Πιστεύει
στήν άνάγκη άναθερμάνσεως τών
σχέσεων μt τΙς 'Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες
καί δήλωσε δ τι θά έργασθι'j γι' αύ­
τό. Σάν ύπουργός 'Εξωτερικών στή ν
Κυβέρνηση Γ. Ράλλη δλοκλήρωσε
τΙς · έμπειρίες του στήν έξωτερικι)
πολιτική. Χειρίστηκε τό θέμα τών
άμερικανικών βάσεων στήν 'Ελλά­
δα, στό πλαίσιο τών γενικώτερων,
φιλικών σχέσεων μt τήν 'Αμερική,
τό Κυπριακό, τΙς σχέσεις τής ' Ελλά·
δος μt τό ΝΑΤΟ, τι)ν Τουρκία, τήv
ΕΟΚ καΙ τόν 'Ανατολικό Συνασπι­
σμό.
. Πέρα, δμως, άπό τΙς πιό πρόσφα­
τες αύτές έμπειρίες, ό άνηψιός τού
'Ελευθερfου Βενιζέλου, εΤνσι γνω­
στός σάν οΙκονομικό στέλεχος πολ­
λών κυβερνήσεων. Διετέλεσε ύ­
πουργός Συντονισμού κα16λλων οΙ-
ΣΕΠΤΕΜΒΡΙΟΥ

κονομικών ύπουργείων στήν διάρ­
κεια τής μακράς του θητείας στήν
πολιτική ζωή τής ' Ελλάδος- πρωτο­
μπι'jκς στήν Βουλι) τό 1946. Πιστεύει
στήν tλεύθερη οΙκονομία καΙ ύπε­
σχέθη δτι θά ένισχύση τήν Ιδιωτική
πρωτοβουλία, πράγμα πού εΤναι
φυσικό νά ένδιαφέρη τούς 'Ελληνο­
αμερικανούς έπιχειρηματίες καί μά­
λιστα έκείνους πού έχουν, lj θά κά­
μουν, σχέδια tπενδύσεων στήν 'Ελ­
λάδα.

Καραμανλή, τού Ράλλη καΙ τού 'Α­
βέρωφ, μt άψογη, ύποδειγματική,
δημοκρστικι) έκλογη - καi μάλιστα
μέ τήν συντριπτικfι πλειοψηφία τών
70 ψήφων, έναντι 41 τού άντιπάλου
του κ. Στεφανοπούλου- εΤνσι ένδει­
κτική, όχι μόνο τών ήγετικών του
προσόντων, άλλο καi τι'jς προσω­
πικής άκτινοβολίας του, τής γενικής
άντιλήψεως δτι ~ταν ό καλύτερος.
·Ο καταλληλότερος . ..

Περισσότερο δμως άπό δλα, εlναι
ήγέτης δημοκρατικός. Πιστεύει ά­
κράδαντα στό ϋψιστοάγαθό τι'jςάν­
θρώπινης έλευθερfας καΙ άξιοπρέ­
πειας - εΤναι Δυτικός άνθρωπος. Εύ­
ρωπαίος έμποτισμένος μt τiς άξίες
τού 'Ελληνοσχριστισvικού Πολι­
τισμού.
"Η ταν άπό τούς πρώτους πολιτι­
κούς πού συνέλαβε ή χούντα τών
συνταγματαρχών τήν νύχτα τής
21ης 'Απριλίου 1967 καΙ άργότερα
διέφυγε στό έξωτερικό, γιά νά τήν
πολεμήση στό πλευρό τού Καρα­
μανλή καΙ σέ συνεργασία μέ άλλα
διακεκριμένα στελέχη τού πολιτι­
κού κpσμου. 'Επέστρεψε στήν •Ελ­
λάδα μετά τfιν άμνηστία πού εΤχε
δώσει ό Παπαδόπουλος. γιά νά βρε­
θι'j σύντομα στήν φυλακή, καταδι­
κασμένος άπό Στρατοδικείο τού
'Ιωαννίδη, τού δημιουργού τι'jς Κυ­
πριακής τρσγωδlας.
Λ Αν καi παλαιός άντfπαλος τού Κα~
ρσμανλι'j, ~ταν ό πρώτος πολιτικός
πού στό χρόνια τι'jς δικτστορfας ύ­
πέδειξε τόν σημερινό Πρόεδρο τής
Δημοκρατίας, σόν λύση τού τρομε­
ρού άδιεξόδου πού εΤχε ώδηγήσει τό
"Εθνος ή άνοδος στι)ν tξουσfα τι'jς
παρέας Παπαδοπούλου.
'Η άνάδειξη τού Κεντρώου πάντο-
Γιά τήν έκλογή τού κ. Κ. Μητσο­
τάκη δέν πανηγυρfζουν μόνο Όί
Κρι'jτες όμογενείς.
' Ικανοποίηση
προκάλεσε ή άνάδειξή του σάν ήγέ­
τη τής «Νέας Δημοκρστfας» καΙ στι)ν
συντριπτική πλειοψηφfα τών •Ελλη­
νοαμερικανών, πού δέν βλέπουν
τόν Κρητικό πολιτικό άρχηγό σάν
τόν πιό κατάλληλο άντίπαλο τού κ.
Παπανδρέου.
Τόν βλέπουν σάν
έθνικό κεφάλαιο. Σάν ένα Πολιτει­
ακό παράγοντα ύψίστης περιωπής.
Πολιτικό μt μεγάλο dίσθημα εύθύνης καi διεθνtς κύρος.

ΕΝΑ ΚΑΛΟ ΜΑΘΗΜΑ

ΝΑ καλό μάθημα ύψηλού πολιτικού ήθους καί πραγμα­
τικού πατριωτισμού έδωσε ό βουλευτfις τής Νέας Δημο­
κρτίας κ. Λευτέρης Παπαδημητρίου σέ όλους τοuς tπισκε­
πτομένους τίς ΗΠΑ ffΕλληνες πολιτικοuς καί, Ιδιαιτέρως, τοuς
βουλευτές τού ΠΑ.ΣΟ.Κ., ποu σέ δημόσιες συγκεντρώσεις
έπιδίδονται σέ δριμύτατες έπιθέσεις tναντίον τών πολιτικών
aντιπάλων τους κσί καλλιεργούν τfιν κομματικοποίηση τής
Όμογενεfας μέ τήν'ίδρυαη κομματικών γραφείων.
· Ο κ. Παπαδημητρίου, tμφανίσθηκε στό τηλεοπτικό
πρόγραμμα τού Δημήτρη Καστανό. 'Ερωτηθείς όπό τόν
τηλεπαρουαιαστιΊ νά σχολιόση τό άποτέλεσμα τών εύρω­
εκλογών στήν 'Ελλάδα, ό κ. Παπαδημητρίου, ό όποίος έξε­
λέγη γιά πρώτη φορά βουλευτiις τό 1981 καί έχει σπουδάσει
στι'ιν 'Αμερική, έδωσε τήν άκόλουθη aπάντηση:
•Λυnοϋμαι, άλλά δtν θά τό κάμω. ~Εχω σον άρχή,
δταν βρiσιι:ομαι tκτός · Ελλαδικοϋ χώρου, νά μη μιλώ yιό
κομματικά. Νομi~ω δτι ή tξαyωyι') τi'jς κομματικi'jς δια­
μάχης άnοτελεf lνα άρνητικό nαράyοντα, ινα διχαστικό
στοιχεfο, nou άnοβαiνει εΙς βάρος τών tθνικών συμφε­
ρόντων. Πρέπει οΙ όμοyενεfς νά εlναι tνωμένοι. Γι' αύτό,
θά μοϋ tnιτρέφης νά μη μιλήσω yιό κομματικά•.
· Ο κ. Παπαδημητρίου, άπαντών σέ άλλο έρώτημα, εlπε
ότι μέ λύπη διαπfατωαε ότι of όμογενείςατίςαυζητήαειςτους
μιλούν μέ κάποιο φανατισμό γιά τά κομματικά τής 'Ελλάδος

τών Πολιτικών κομμάτων τής 'Ελλάδος καί Ιδιαfτερα τού
ΠΑ.ΣΟ.Κ., τό όποίο κατήγγειλε γιά τήν συνεχιζόμενη προ­
σπάθειά του νά κομματικοποιήση τήν ·Ομογένεια, ό παραι­
τηθείς ύφυπουργός ' Αποδήμων κ. 'Ασημάκης Φωτίλας.
Τόσο ή καταγγελία τού κ. Φωτίλα, τού όποίου ή έκθεση πρός
τόν Πρωθυπουργό κ. Παπανδρέου δέν έδόθη όκόμη στι'ιν
δημοσιότητα, όσο κai τά λεχθέντα άπό τόν κ. Παπαδημη­
τρίου, άποτελοϋν μιά άκόμη δικαίωση τού άγώνα μας. ' Ενός
όγώνα ποu τόν διεξάγομε μόνοι, άφού ol δυό καθημερινές
tφημερfδες μας βοήθησαν τήν κομματικοποίηση μέ τήν

δεύτερη μεγάλη πόλη τού 'Αφγανιστάν, άλλά ~νας όπό τοuς
ατενώτερους συνεργάτες του σκοτώθηκε, όταν τό αύτοκf­
νητό τους δέχτηκε tπίθεση άπό τοuς Μουτζαχεντίν.
U Οπως τονίζουν οί ίδιες πηγές, ούτε ή Καμποuλ έχει
ξεφύγει άπό τό πολεμικό κλfμα, άφού tκρήξεις βομβών
άκούγονται σχεδόν κάθε νύχτα καΙ μάχεςσημειώθηκανατήν
περιοχή τού άεροδρομίου καΙ στό οΙκοδομικό συγκρότημα
ποu διαμένουν κυρίως Σοβιετικοί aξιωματικοί.
·Αλλά ένώ ό λαός τού 'Αφγανιστάν μάχεται έναντίον τών
Σοβιετικών εΙσβολέων, καμμιά διαμαρτυρία δέν άκούγεται
στίς εύρωπσίκές πρωτεύουσες κaf, βεβαίως, ούτε στfιν 'Α­
θήνα. Ή εύσισθησfα τών έκεί «δ ημοιφατικώνιι tξαντλείται
μέ tκδηλώσεις συμπαθεfας ύπέρ τl'jς στυγνής δικτατορίας
τών Σαντινίστας στην Νικαράγουα καΙ μέ κραυγές διαμαρ­

τσοτάκης εJναι 67 χρονών. Κατάγεται
όπό τό Χανιά τi'jς Κρήτης καΙ εJναι παν ­
τρεμένος μt την Μαρίκα Γιαννοuκου .
Σπούδασε Νομικό καi Πολιτικtς • Επι ­
στi'jμες ατό Πανεπιστήμιο · Αθηνών. Τό
έπόγγελμό του εJναι δικηγόρος. Στό Νο­
μικό lχει κατευθύνει δλη σχεδόν την οΙ ­
κογένειά του. 'Η πρώτη του κόρη, ή

νήργηαε μόνος του . ·Αντίθετα μt την
γνώμη τοϋ ύπουργικοΟ συμβουλίου.

Banquet on August 22, during AHEPA's
62nd Conνention in ι Miami Beach, FL.
Highlights included speeches by the
Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs
Committee, Dante Fascell, Cyprus Ambassador Andreas )acoνides, Greek Minister Counsellor Alexander Philon, and
ΑΗΕΡΑ Supreme President Peter Η. Cardiges. Α message sent by Congresswoman
Geraldine Ferraro, who was unable to
attend, was read to the audience. Alex G.
Spanos, head of one of the largest construction businesses in the United States,
was presented with the AHEPA's Aristotel ian Award.
Prior to presenting the award to Mt.
Spanos, the audience was entertained
with a 20-minute audio-νisual presentation narrated by Telly Saνa las on Spanos'
life accomplishments. President Cardiges
introduced Spanos, saying he "is a man
whose belief in the νalues of America are
unbending and unswerνing, and because
he is a man who belieνes and loνes
America, he has dedicated the rewards of
his most exceptional career to making this
country a better place in which to live."
He then presented Spanos a handpainted scroll and bust of Aristotle.
Spanos responded by saying that,
"being an Ahepan and a Greek American,
I am particularly pleased to receiνe this
award." He then reνiewed the struggles
of Greek Americans for social equality,
noting that: "Under the best and worst of

Among the many philanthropic actiνities of Alex Spanos haνe been support
of cultural exhibits from Greece, including the notable Alexander the Great collection, and he has made seνeral large
donations to his alma mater, the Uniνer­
sity of the Pacific.

Constantine Karamanlis, Prime Minister
Andreas Papandreou, Foreign Minister
Yiannis Haralambopoulos, and the Secretary-General for Greeks Abroad, Μ. Papastaνrou. President Karamanlis wrote
that: 'Άs members of ΑΗΕΡΑ, loyal and
responsible citizens of your new homeland, you haνe always stood by the
country of your origin and giνen your
support for its causes. lt is a contribution
which is recognized and honored by the
nation."
'Ύour long tradition of serνice to the
homeland and your constant eagerness to
respond wheneνer your country cal/s,"
wrote Prime Minister Papandreou, " con-
stitute for us an example to refer to and a
basis for support in the truly difficult
struggle to protect and defend our
precious heritage."
His Excellency Andreas )acoνides, Ambassador of Cyprus to the United States,
said that the ΑΗΕΡΑ "has been uniquely
successful in enhancing the position of
Americans of Greek origin in this great
country. And, you haνe been rendering
unνaluable support to the just cause of
Cyprus, where such support is of the
utmost importance."
The Ambassador said that in the last
nine months we "haνe witnessed
ominous new deνelopements in the
already graνe situation my country and
your fellow Hellenes in Cyprus haνe had
to face since the barbaric 1974 inνasion."
ln spite of the excellent work of the
ΑΗΕΡΑ, Ambassador )acoνides said that
" we are facing a relentless and ruthless
opponent, with important allies in the
American establishment and a well-oiled
public relations machine."
AHEPA's long-standing principle that
aid to Turkey must be contingent on real
progress for a Cyprus settlement, the
Ambassador said, was correct first since,
"in its occupation in Cyprus, Turkey is illegally using American-supplied arms
giνen for common defense," and secondly, since Turkey, "which spends hundreds
of millions of dollars eνery year maintaining its army of occupation in Cyprus and
the Denktash pseudo-state," is in effect
subsidized by U.S. military and economic
Biography of Cleo Zambetis
ΑΗΕΡΑ Supreme President Cleo Ν.
Zambetis of Canfield, ΟΗ, was born in
Samos, Greece, in 1925. ln business for 34
years, he is President of Camco Painting
Serνice , lnc. of Youngstown, ΟΗ , an
international painting contracting firm.
Α 25-year memberof ΑΗΕΡΑ, he serνed
as Supreme Secretary from 1982-1983, and
as Supreme Vice-President last year. Prior
to his eleνation to national office, he was
elected to seνeral offices of Lincoln
Chapter Νο. 89 in Youngstown, ΟΗ,
including three. terms as President. He has
also serνed on the District Νο. 11 Lodge
for four years and he was elected District
Governor in 1980.
The Supreme President was a founder
of the Greek Orthodox Church of
Archangel Michael in Cambell, ΟΗ, has
serνed on the board of St. )ohn's Church
in Youngstown, and was a grand benefactor of the League of Greek Orthodox
Stewards "Logos".
After attending Youngstown University in Business Administration, he served
with the United States Naνy in the Pacific
during World War 11 and isa life member
of the Disabled American Veterans.
Brother Zambetis is a member of Hillman Lodge 481, F&M of Youngstown,
Royal Arch Masons, ΑΙ Koran Temple,
and the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite
32nd Degree. He is also a past president of
the Mahoning and Trumbull County
Painting and Decorating Contractors of
America.
He and his wife, Faye Arfaras Zambetis,
haνe two daughters, Tulla and Kathy
Conrad, and two grandchildren.

The next speaker, Congressman Dante
Fascell, began by saying that: "Ι Jistened
to the Ambassador from Cyprus νery
carefully and I tore up my speech after Ι
heard him, because Ι. couldn't find anything that I disagreed with." The Cyprus
issue is not solely a Hellenic concern, he
continued, because "all of the νalues that
we hold dear are inνolνed in this
problem: human rights, democracy, fair
play, rule of law, justice, common sense,
and the courage to stand up and say that
that's what we're for."
"ln my judgement, we haνe waited and
waited long enough, we haνe fought this
battle up and down in the Cong•ess and
the Congress has always taken the lead on
it. The Congress has had to take the lead
in eνery single case in trying to bring
about a decision along the lines that Ambassador Jacoνides has pointed out to
us," Fascell stressed. This means "that we
want to retain a balance in terms of
money that is fair and just ... we can't shut
our eyes to the problems in the Aegean
and on Cyprus."
The Congressman said that he hoped to
reduce the proposed leνel of foreign aid
to Turkey by "at least $250 million" as a
first step and a message to rurkey. There
is graνe concern in Congress concerning
the Turkish Cypriot declaration of

to Greece for high school students, and

committee to continue AHEPA's effort to

proof of their degeneration," Mr. Papandreou said. He added that, because of Mr.
Mitsotakis's record, he would not eνen
speak with him.
"Ι do not intend to hold a dialogue with
someone who betrayed his leader and his
party, and who is responsible for the
seνen-year dictatorship and the Cyprus
tragedy," he said.
Mr. Mitsotakis countered that Mr. Papandreou was panic-stricken by his
accession and by the fact 'that he wou/d
haνe to face Mr. Mitsotakis in the next
general election. Hesaid Mr. Papandreou
had lowered the standards of public life
to a dangerously low leνel.
New Democracy's 111 members of Parliament said that neνer before had such
language been used against political
opponents.
Mr. Papandreou's statement was also
criticized by other parties and by large
sections of the press. They said that it
could herald a return to the crisis of the
1960's and to the acrimony that has often
haunted Greek politica/ life.

Pro-Goνernment newspapers largely
supported Mr. Papandreou. Some of
them haνe started publishing serialized

What brought the Greek socialists to
power in 1981 was the promise of change
and the attraction of Mr Andreas Papandreou . Three years later, there is little
change to be seen. And the emergence of
Mr Constantine Mitsotakis as a leader of
the opposition now threatens to challenge
Mr Papandreou's personal appeal. The
six-foot-four Cretan liberal (known as
"the tall one" ) is an articulate orator with
nerνe s of steel.
Mr Mitsotakis succeeds Mr Evanghelos
Aνeroff (who had resigned because of old
age) as leader of the main opposition
party in Greece, the New Democracy. He
beat the unobtrusive and more conserνa­
tive Mr Constantine Stefanopoulos by 70
votes to 41 . The margin of his victory
showed that the party, demoralised by
losing power, wants the sort of strong
leadership offered by its founder, Mr
Constantine Karamanlis, now the country's president. Mr Mitsotakis is seen as
somebody who will stand up to Mr Papandreou and use his down-to-earth logic to
burst the prime minister's high-flown rhetoήcal balloons.
Fierce ήvalry already exists between
the two men. They first came into conflict
some 20 years ago, as they vied for
influence within the Centre Union, the
pa,ιy of George Papandreou, Andreas's
late father. In 1965 Mr Mitsotakis led a
large-scale defection that brought down
the centre govemment and won him the
lasting hatred of Andreas Papandreou.
On Sunday Mr Papandreou compared Mr
Mitsotakis to Ephialtes , the fifth-century
BC traitor who helped the Persians at
Thermopylae, and cal\ed him a lackey of
the big monopolies.
Some obserνers took the attack as the
beginning of an election campaign. Elections are not due for another 13 months,
but by choosing to hold them early Mr.
Papanιjreou would deny Mr Mitsotakis
time to consolidate his own position as
leader, to reorganise the party, and above
all to enhance its appeal to voters of the
centre as Greece's economy stumbles.
It is the centrists who, disillusioned by
the socialists' performance , might give
New Democracy a victory at the polls.
The European elections in June showed
that power is likely to belong to whoever
wins their votes. Mr Papandreou, by
keeping alive their memory of Mr Mitsotakis's defection, hopes to minimise the
chance that they could be lured by the tall
man's oνertures .
But if Mr Papandreou makes concessions to the centre, he may face trouble
from the restless left wing of his own
party, while the prolonged truce with the
pro-Russian Greek Communists on the
labour front is wearing thin. The communists, possibly sensing an early election,
are trying to distance themselνes from the
socialist government's unremarkable
performance.

Narrowing the breach

At last the efforts of the United Nations
secretary-general, Mr Javier Perez de
Cuellar, to bήng about talks between
Greek and Turkish Cypήots look like
being rewarded. On September 10th in
New York, he is due to have preliminary
discussions with the Greek Cypήots'
President Spyros Kypήanou and the
Thrkish Cypriots' President Mr Rauf
Denktash, on the basis of a package of
confidential proposals formulated by Mr
Perez de Cuellar.
The two sides will not sit in the same
room for these talks, because the Greek
Cypriots fear that would imply their acknowledging the legitimacy of the Turkish Cypriots' state. The patient Mr Perez
and his assistants will have to act as gobetweens. 1t is something even to have
got them into the same building. Mr
Perez presented both with his "working
points" a month ago, at separate meetings in Vienna; but only on August 31st
did the two leaders agree to come to New
York, after a reluctant Mr Kyprianou had
been strongly pressed to agree, both by
Greece's President Constantin Karamanlis and by the two Greek Cypriot oppositίon partίes-the right-wίng I'Jational Rally and the comrnunίst Akel.
The division of Cyprus goes back to
1964, when, after savage fightίng, the
Turkish minority took refuge in a number
of enclaves. In 1974, when an attempt was
made to unίte the island with Greece ,
Turkey occupied most of its northern
half. Although a separate Thrkish Cypή­
ot administration thenceforth controlled
the north, the Greek Cypriot part of the
oήginal power-sharing government was
internationally recognised as the only
government of Cyprus. The Turkish Cypriots became increasίngly angry about this
(and about the many Greek appeals to
the United Nations for favourable resolutions); last November they proclaimed a
republic of northem Cyprus-which still
has no recognition except from Thrkey.
The New York " proximίty talks" will be
the closest contact made since November
between the two sides.
Against this unpromίsίng background,
Mr Perez has wisely concentrated on
tryίng to get even a very small amount of
dίalogue started. It is understood that he
bas suggested, as a framework for discussίon, the concept of a bizonal federal
Cyprus that was accepted six years ago
botb by Mr Denktash and by the late
Archbishop Makarios. But he has also
sought to get the parties talking about
some practical steps to ease the present
situation-sucb as the reopening of Nicosia aίrport , and the readmissίon of Greeks
to part of the now Turkish-controlled city
of Famagusta, ίn both cases .under UN
supervision.

The Death Rituals of Rural Greece
Α stunning moment occurs at a funeral
ritual in rural Greece, and the knowing
anthropologist watching the encounter
between an outsider (his local informant
and photographer) and the priest
proνides an interpretation that says much
about the pre-conceptions and misconceptions of western anthropological
science.

the graνe. "Assuming a stiff pose of benediction (his hand is turned toward the
dead while his face is turned toward the
camera), the priest asks the photographer
if he wishes to take any more photographs."

proνide a "priνiledged moment of connection" through which "superficial"
culture diνisions are oνercome.
Danforth hopes that the book of text
and photographs will minimize the
distance between the reader and the
Greek νillagers, so that the reader will
" see his death in the deaths of the people
of rural Greece."
This is not what happens, says C. Nadia
Seremetakis, in her reνiew of the book in
the first issue of The Journal of Modern
Hellenism, published jointly by the Greek
Studies Program of Hellenic College and
b y the Center for Byzantine and Modern
Greek Studies at Queens College of the
City Uniνersity of New York.
lt is the special nature of the rituals of
the people of the Greek village of
Potamia that marks their separation from
obserνer
any world the reader might know, Seremetakis says. " ln the νery place that Danforth assumes he has opened a passage
between ... urban American and Greek
peasant, he has actually marked a site of
closure between the two societies. The
true releνance of this book lies in the
absence of such rituals and social
relations in our modern society where
death has been deritualized."
Not only does the book not produce an
identification between the reader's experience of death and the death experiences of Greek νillagers, Seremetakis
says, but "this book is an eloquent and
ironic reminder of what is absent in our
own culturally specific experience of
death."
The book's photos transgress in two
ways against the culture they seek to
impart, the reνiewer says. "First, against
the customary formality with which the
mortuary rituals are conducted by the νil­
lagers, and second against Danforth's assertions of the breakdown of exclusionary boundaries between the mourners
and their American obserνers."
On the first point, she says, the photographer "makes the usual erroneous assumption of the Westerner that cathartic
experience necessarily implies th~ decentering of posture, body moνement,or
physical gesture." Far from it, she explains, Greek mourning ceremonies are
marked by " eloquent alternation
between a patterned series of formalized
gestures and a flood of emotional outpouring that is constrained and channelled by these moνements."
She strongly contradicts the idea that
the photographer has become an integral
part of the process of the cathartic burial
ceremony. The priest's gesture rather
confirms the photographer as outsider,
she argues. The woman, "the central
actors of the mourning ceremony do not
show the faintest awareness of recognition of the photographer's presence." (lt

income for the first six months of 1984 of
$1,741,460, as compared to $1,468,849 in
1983, an increase of $272,611 or 18.6%,
reported H.S. Kostakopoulos, President
and Chief Executiνe Officer.
Second quarter earnings for 1984 aggregated $941,300. ln the second quarter
of 1983, they reached $935,758, reflecting
the effect of a $550,000 reduction in the
proνision for credit losses during that

The increase in net income for the first
six months was attributable to a number
of factors, including: an increase in net
interest income of $730,999, or 8.7% oνer
1983; an increase in free-related income

Seremetakis concludes that for all its
good intentions, the book will not
"facilitate a cross-cultural sharing of the
un iνersal experience of death ... what is
documented here is the confrontation of
contrasting cultural realities and the
aggressiνe assertion of the world νiew of

the Greek pe~sant .. . Furthermore, she
declares flatly, the photographs "blatantly contradict Danforth's interpretation of
their contents ... Danforth seems to haνe
had a distinctly different experience in
the field than Tsiaras." Seremetakis herself is currently engaged in fieldwork
study of mortuary rituals in Mani, Greece.

College, also contains commentaries on

'Όnce again we are here to dance and
d ine together near the end of the su mmer
season. We thank all our parishioners and
friends who support ~ur efforts during
the summer season, because it is a long,
hard winter," said Cleo Ρ. Tsounis, Chairperson of the 15th Annual Dinner- Dance
of the Transfiguration Church in Mattituck, Long lsland.
Residents of eastern Long lsland and
political leaders expressed their support
for the work carried on at the rural Greek
Orthodox community through a turnout
of two hundred persons. The social was
held Saturday evening, August 25th, at
Tolendal lnn in Mattituck. Outstanding
cuisine was serνed by the staff through
the management of Joe Piaff. GreekAmericans and their neighbors danced to
the unique music of Manny Ayνas in the
elegant surroundings. Fine music, cuisine
and an excellent background made this
event one of the highlights of the East End
summer season.
Four notable Long lsland political leaders attended: Congressman William Carney of the First District of Long lsland;
Southold Town Supervisor Frank
Murphy; Former Southold Town Supervisor William Pelllll and Judge Frederick
Tedeschi. Prominent persons who
attended from various communities and
organizations included : Orestes Varvitsiotes, former Chairman of the Public
Affairs Committee of the American Hellenic lnstitute; Andrew Stamboulidis,
Goνernor of the Empire State District of
ΑΗΕΡΑ and Mrs. Stamboulidis; Mr. and
Mrs. Ε. Kontokosta and family; members
of the Hellenic American Taxpayers and
Ciνic Association of Southold Township
(HATCASI) and others.
The rural Church of the Transfiguration is still surrounded by potato fields
with a glimpse of homes in the
background. 1984 marks the beginning of
Reν. Nicholas Sitaras' tenure as pastor of
the parish. Α new νigor and enthusiasm is
present. Theofan Kyvernitis, founder of
the Transfiguration Church recently
passed away. Dedicated men such as
Kyνernitis built our churches and institutions that haνe perpetuated our HellenicChristian heritage from generation to
generation. Peter Pappas, current president for six years, has continued the
dedicated work initiated by Kyνernitis.
Pappas has donated his serνices as cantor,
battling snow and rain storms in order to
attend church serνices. The small rural
parish exemplifies Orthodox communities across the United States who are
attempting to perpetuate the Orthodox
faith and Hellenic culture.

by Lycurgus around the seventh century B.C. were not only felt in the αncient Greek
stαte of Spartα, but remαin with us to this very dαy. His portrαit, sculpted in white

From αncient Spαrtα we trαced Lycurgus footsteps to the United Stαtes Congress,
where we found several thousand of his modern -dαy counterpαrts working behind
the politicαl frontlines, eαch in their own wαy mαking α pαrt of history. Among them
we found severαl dozen Greek Americαns, αnd we αsked α few to shαre some of their
thoughts with us.

In the Footsteps of Lycurgus
Peter Marudas, the "dean" of the Greek
American congressional aides, has been
involved in politics since 1963 when he
was a govemment and political reporter
for the Bαltimore Evening Sun. After
working in the offices of two Baltimore
mayors, he joined the staff of Congressman Paul Sarbanes and has followed him
to the United States Senate where Sarbanes is cuπently servinghis second terrn.
"There is a big difference in the two types
of Congressional offices," says Marudas.
"First of all, the areas of responsibility
are different: a House member has a district, a very specific area of responsibility; Senators deal with a whole state, and
consequently have larger staffs who must
deal with a broader range of interests. "
Because of the proximity of Senator
Sarbanes' state, Maryland, to Washίng­
ton, Marudas has unique experience in
running offices not only on both sides of
the Capitol, but at the district and national level as well. And, although
Congressional offices are generally very
responsive to constituent concems, he
feels that this is even more so at the district level. 'The task of a legislative assistant in Washington is to gather all the
inforrnation from a policy standpoint. The
person working in the district office is
more geared to the individual constituent, and must seek out what people are
thinking on a specific issue. In fact, the
most cήtical person in terms of getting
a point across, is frequently the person
running the Senate or House member's
office in the state. ιι
From Senator to Janitor
Dealing with constituent problems is,
however, also a function of the staff in
Washington, and for many this is the
most rewarding part of their job.
George Tenet, a legislative specialist
for defense and foreign policy issues to
Senator John Heinz of Pennsylvania says
that "the most personally satisfying kinds
of issues Ι deal with ai.e those when we
can help somebody quickly. The nicest
thing I've ever been able to do was for
someone in my church community at
home- St. Nicholas in Flushing, ΝΥ. Her
husband died in China and they couldn't
get the body out; Ι was at least able to
expedite that through the State Department. Ι don't know that Ι made that much
of a difference, but Ι feel that we did help
a little bit, that Ι was able to relieve some
pain, some suffering. Ι think it is important that we are aware of these things/'
Tenet adds, "because there is a human
dimension to the problems that we face
that we often forget about."
Stavroula Lambrakopoulos, a foreign
affairs assistant to Congressman James
Floήo of New Jersey agrees that helping
constituents is a very rewarding part of
her job that can also have its sad moments. "When the Marines were bombed
in Lebanon, we received a telegram from
a family in our district asking if we could
help find out what had happened to their
son. It was very difficult for me as a human being as we worked to find out what
had happened to their son. Luckily, he
was fine and we were able to call his
farnily with the good news that their son
was alive and well. Ι can't imagine what
would have happened if we had gotten
different news, and how we would have
told the family."
Although staffers tend to focus most
of their energy in a specific area-legislative issues, constituent requests, press
liaison- they often perform a vaήety of
tasks. As Senator Jake Gam's Washington office manager, Gregoήa IGreg) Korologos' duties are primarily administrative, although she deals with a variety of
issues. The title of office manager "is a
little word compared to what you have
to do," she says. 'Όne day you can be the
Senator, and the next day the janitor."
Peter Marudas recounts similar expeή­
ences, particularly when Sarbanes served
as a Congressman. "In the House, the
staffs are smaller, and we would do every-

thing; both the Senator and Ι com.ing from
a background of Greek restaurants--we
even would mop up the floors at times."
Yet, it is this variety in their work schedules that appeals to most congressional
aides. Nikita Lulias, a legislative assistant on Congressman Michael Bilirakis'
staff, deals mainly with issues affectmg
the elderly, a large percentage of their
Florida constituency. However, he frequently deals with other issues, such as
foreign affairs, defense policy, and local
development projects. ' 1 think you come
to appreciate the great variety of concems
that your constituents have, and a

congressional office must match that in
terms of actiνity.
Committee Constituencies
In addition to the personal staffs, there
are several hundred congressional aides
who work for congressional committees.
Paul Tsompanas, for nearly ten years a
professional staff member of the House
Armed Services, has an impressive background in American politics. Prior to an
eight year stint on Califomia Congressman Bob Wilson's personal staff, he was
a congressional correspondent for the Copley News Service.
What does Tsompanas see as the biggest pressure in his job~ "The most difficult part for me, " he quickly responds,
"is to know that l'm going to make a
decision that can affect millions of people. That is an awesome responsibility."
Nancy Agris has been a staff member
of the House Subcommittee on Westem
Hemisphere Affairs for si.x years. The best
words to descήbe her would be active,
involved, immersed in her work and life.
She not only enjoys working on Capitol
Hill, she "thήves on it."
Like Tsompanas, Mark Tavlarides has
also had expeήence working both on the
personal staff of Congressman Gus Yatron of Pennsylvania as well as on a
congressional committee. He is cuπently
staff director of the House Subcommittee
on Human Rights and Intemational Organizations, chaired by Congressman Yatron. His du ties included "managing the
subcommittee agenda, scheduling
congressional heaήngs and selecting witesses. At the staff level," says Tavlar·des, ''I am also responsible for legislaion, committee reports, and managing
ills reported out by the committee."

to him. "lt's a part of my life, in many
ways it defines me. The qualities he identifies most with his upbήnging are "the
dedication to education, to public service, to faith, to family, to community.
The dedication to community is something that l've never not known. Ι can't
imagine not knowing it, and Ι can't imagine doing what l'm doing if Ι hadn't had
that background."
Mark Tavlarides grew up in Washington, DC. His father is the dean of St. Sophia Cathedral, his. mother teaches treek
school. "I cheήsh my Greek Orthodox
faith more than anything else, 11 he says,
"and thatfaithisheavilyintenwined with
my cultural heήtage."
Tavlaήdes adds that he enjoys his Orthodox faith. 1 'People tend to feel that
growing up the son of a priest you somehow have had a sheltered childhood.
Nothing could be further from the truth.
Ι attended public schools and had the opportunity to be exposed to many different
cultures, something which probably
helped me appreciate my own background more." His parents have been the

excel in almost everything. In school we

Her voice trails before she adds: ,,There
is something about being Greek. lt's
something they can never take away from
