Right now, the U.S. dollar is worth 25% more than it was last
year. Over 40% more than two years ago. And there are also
special airfares you can take advantage of.
Isn't this the moment you've heen waiting for?
It's the perfect time to visit family and friends. To sail the
sunny blue Aegean. To enjoy Greece the way you've always
wanted to.
This year, the dollar goes so much farther. And so can you.
There's no place on earth like Greece.

tional Progressin Association - the largest organization of
Greek Americans.
The concern of the Greek-American community with Cyprus
and the Aegean islands was not fostered by Prime Minister
Papandreou's remarks at the luncheon we hosted in his honorj but
has been a growing concern, especially since Turkey's aggressions
pose a serious threat to our Hellenic heritage - which belongs
not only to Greek-Americans but to all civilization. Our belief
that Turkish threats against the Greek Aegean Sea must cease and that U.S. military aid to Turkey must be linked to Turkish
withdrawal from Cyprus - pre-dates the election of Andreas
Papandreou last October.
If Ms. Howe, who seems to write more thorough reports
from her home base, Ankara, than those from Athens, had read
the text of his remarks to us, as opposed to the first paragraph
of the release, she would have understood that our "key role"
referred equally to cultural as to political objectives.
As the President of the AHEPA and the leader of the delegation that met with Mr. Papandreou, I can assure your readers
that the Prime Minister did not have to "go out of his way" to
enlist our support for a just settlement of the Cyprus conflict."

From Dr. G.E. Kokotakis
Dear Mr. Makrias:
I would like to take this opportunity to
thank you on behalf of the Hellenic Medical
Society of New York for the recent coverage
given to us in the February 1982 issue of
your highly respected magazine "H NEA
YOPK H" regarding our annual dinnerdance of last December at the Plaza Hotel.
Since the second paragraph of the story
docs not clearly reflect the educational
purpose of this fund raising affair I would
like to give you some details concerning our
scholarship program.
The scholarship fund was st arted 6 years
ago, at which time the awards were few in
number and relat ively sma ll in amount . I am
now happy to inform you that in the short
time of its existence the sc holarship project
has progressed enabling us to offer six, one
thousand dollars scholarships. I am also
happy to announce that the scholarship
co mmittee under the chairmanship of Dr.
Marin os Petratos looks forward to being
ab le to grant larger and more scholarships
in the future.
The following six medi cal students were
the recipients of $1,000.00 scholarships
granted in December 1981:
I) George Florakis
2) George Yiangopoulos
3) Dean Karalis
4) Dennis Kostakos
5) Christ Corines
6) Dora Tsatsou.
With many thanks and best wishes,
George E. Kokotakis
President of the Hellenic
Medical Society of N. Y.

and the Greek-Americans
An AHEPA Delegation headed by
Supreme President Gustav Coffinas
returned from Greece on April 18. after a
series of meetings with the Prime Minister
of Greece, Andreas Ppandreou and other
high Greek officials. The meeting, between
Prime Minister Papandreou and the
Ahepans was the first with leaders of a Greek
American organization.
"The Prime Minister thanked the
AHEPA for its efforts on behalf of justice
for Cyprus." said Supreme President Coffinas, and he called the AHEPA thc"key"to
preserving Hellenism in America. The
Ahepans and the Prime Minister also
discussed the possibility of the AHEPA
maintaining a summer camp in Greece for
Greek Americans.
After the meeting the AHEPA hosted a
luncheon in honor of the Prime Minister.
Attendind the luncheon, in addition to the

Greek Prime Minister remarking that: "On
behalf of all Americans who are represented by the largest Greek-American organization AHEPA, I am proud to raise my glass in
honor of the Greek Prime Minister and his
wife. The Prime Minister lived for 20 years
in the United States and continued his
successful career here in Greece. In raising
my glass I ask God to give you the health and
wisdom to complete the great and magnificent task which you have undertaken."
Prime Minister Papandreou responded
to the toast saying: "I have truly been
looking forward to this meeting with the
leadership of Hellenism in the United States
and your words, Mr. President, have moved
me deeply. I feel indeed that as Prime
Minister of this country my first and
foremost responsibility at this difficult time
is the protection of our country's national
interests and the interests of Hellenism in
general." In conclusion the Prime Minister
added that: "we see Greece as the metropolis
of Hellenism which is spread all over the
world - in Australia, Canada, Northern
Europe and mainly in the United States,
where there are three million Americans of
Greek origin. They are all Greek Orthodox
and know well the struggles waged by
Greece and indeed remember well the
history of their fathers and forefathers.
And we truly believe that this Hellenism,
the Hellenism of the United States, which is
a powerful country on whose decisions the
very survival of humanity depends - without wanting to underestimate the fact that
you are citizens ofthat country, and that you
have obligations towards that country,
without wanting to underestimate this we believe that your presence, your support
in the great problems which our country is
currently facing, can be the key factor in
enabling us to overcome our national
problems during this crisis and to
consolidate peace in the area by
safeguarding our country's borders and by
gaining the freedom and independence of

The Ahepans also met with the leaders of
the Greek National Youth Foundation
to finalize plans for the forthcoming
AHEPA Journey to Greece and Journey to
America programs. The Greek National
Youth Foundation will host approximately

I would like to take this opportunity, on
behalf of the Greek government, to express
our gratitude for all the support you have

all that you do, and we know how valuable
your efforts have been in the national issue
of Cyprus, which has top priority and is of
such prime importance. And I must confess
- since I always like to tell the truth, no
matter who hears it - that mother Greece
has not treated her children in the manner
and with the generosity which they have
deserved. In the most difficult of times they
have struggled to bring honor to the mother
country. So I am taking this opportunity
of asking you to forgive the country for its

at the same time that my government will do
everything in its power to strengthen our

Athens Is Seeking To Reassure Allies
By Marvin Howe
The N. Y. Times. Apri/26. /982
ATH ENS, April 23- Greece's Socialist
Government. which won a sweeping
electoral victory six months ago with a
program for radical change, is now seeking
to improve its strained relations with its
Western allies. particularly the United
States.
Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou
recently sent out a series of signa ls ind icating
that. contrary to the election slogans, his
government was prepared to stay in the
North Atlantic Treaty Organization, reach
an agreement on United States bases in
Greece and remain a fuH member of the
Eu ropean Economic Community.
Accord ing to senior Greek sources,
however , Mr. Papandreou feels that there
must be some gains for Greece so that he can
justify to his supporters the need for
maintaining Western links out of either
national or realistic interests.
Communists Already Critical
The Greek Communist Party has already
publicly attacked the Government for backsliding and failing to carry out campaign
pledges to estab li sh a truly independent
foreign policy.
Mr. Papandreou's Government has made
a few dramatic gestures of independence
that have annoyed some Western allies but
have placated his party's left wing and the
Communists to some extent. There was, for
instance. the refusal to join the S inai peacekeeping force and the refusa l to go along
with a United States bid for sanctions
against the Soviet Union over Poland. There
was also the d iplomatic recognition of the
Palestine Liberation Organization and the
visit to Athens by the P.LO. leader Vasir
Arafat. The Libyan leader, Col. Muammar el -Qaddafi, is also due to visit here. his
first official visit to a NATO country.
Nevertheless. Greek diplomltic sources
point ou t that on important foTcign policy
issues, Mr. Papandreou has shown caution
and moderation and refrained from making
unilateral decisions.
Greece Won't Block Spain
Earlier this month, Mr. Papandreou
assured Prime Minister Leopoldo Ca lvo
Sotelo of Spain that Greece would back
Spain's entrance into the Common Market
and NATO despite Greek reservations. He
also agreed to s upport Portugal's entry into
t he Co mmon Market.
At the same time. the Greek Government
reacted mildly to recent reports from
Washington that the United States is
planning to increase substantially its military aid to Turkey, aboli~hing the previous
ratio of 7 to 10 in aid given to Greece and
Turkey . Previous conservative Governments aJsways loud ly denounced any sug-
26
gestion of a change in the ratio. Official
American sources expressed relief over Mr.
Papandreou's "realistic" response.
Mr. Papandreou, in an interview with
ABC News that was recently published in
the Athens press, described the current
Greek dialogue with the Reagan Administration as positive.
Asked by ABC News whether he wanted
the American bases in Greece to be closed, as
he had said in the campa ign, Mr. Papandreou replied that the answer was yes as a
final goal. But he emphasized that other
problems had to be taken into consideration. He stressed the need for Greek control
over the bases but sa id it was "u nrealistic"
to ins ist on taking over command.
Mr. Papandreou said that he was not
rushing the talks on the bases because
several high-level meetings were necessary to
set the "political fra mewo rk" for the negotiations . Those meetings are expected to get
under way in June with a Reagan-Papandreou meeting at the NATO gathering in
Bonn.
Mr. Papandreou clearly wants to talk to
the United States. A Govern ment spokesman said last month that there was no indication either Secretary of State Alexander
M. Haig Jr. or Defense Secretary Caspar W.
Weinberger would visit Greece, but he
stressed that they would be welcome.
Sources close to the Prime Minister said
the Greek Governme nt had a minimum of
three demands on the issue of the American
bases: the preservation of the bala nce of
power in the Aegean, an "adequate contribution" to Greece's military needs and

Two Win Onassis Awards
The N. Y. Times. April!3, !982
A French physician who organizes
medical relief for victims of international
disasters and a Greek archeologist who
discovered the tomb of Philip of Macedonia
have won $100,000 awards from the
Alexander Onassis Foundation.
The winners are Dr. Bernard Konchner, a
41-year-old French physician who founded
an organization known as Doctors of the
World, and Prof. Manolis Andronikos, 63,
of Salonika University, who in 1979 discovered the tomb of Philip, the father of
Alexander the Great.
The awards, which foundation officials
hope will rival the Nobel Prizes, were
announced in Athens. They are authorized
by the will of Aristotle Onassis, the Greek
shipping magnate, who left the foundation
half of his estate. The foundation was
created as a memorial to Onassis's son, who
died in a plane crash in 1973.
control of operations so that the bases
cannot be used against friendly countries.
'Neither In Nor Out'
Asked about Greece's participation in the
military wing of NATO, Mr, Papandreou
told ABC News, "For the time being we are
neither in nor out." He made it clear that
Greece's position depended on the issue of
operational control in the Aegean and that it
would nor accept any demarcation line that
did not coincide with its eastern borders.
The Papandreou Government can make
no concession concerning operational responsibility over the Aegean because it
cannot accept Turkish control of any
airspace over Greek islands, official sources
said.
The Cyprus question is not being linked to
either NATO participation or the issue of
United States bases, according to Greek
sources,
That is likely to reassure American
officials who had feared some kind of
linkage because Mr. Papandreou has begun
an effort to "internationalize" the Cyprus
problem- the occupation of the northern
part of the island by the Turkish Army since
1974.
Mr. Papandreou has gone out of his way
to enlist Greek-American support on
"national problems." Addressing a delegation from the American Hellenic Institute
recently, the Prime Minister stressed the
" key role" Greek Americans could play in
explaining Greek concerns.
WASHINGTON· On April 22nd members ~f the AHEPA Cyprus Committee met on
Capitol Hill with the sponsors of Congressional "Cyprus Day, " Representatives Gus Yatron
and William J. Bloomfield, to discuss future Congressional activities concerning Cyprus.

Aeschylus's Agamemnon
at Greek Theatre of N. Y.
Aeschylus's AGAMEMNON , one of the
theatre's towering traditions opens at the
Greek Theatre of New York on Wednesday,
May 12th and runs through Sunday, June
6th. Theatre-goers' familiarity with this
classic is unquestionable and yet it is this
familiarity that this production proposes to
challenge. The Greek Theatre of New York
is excited and honored to premiere its
version of AGAMEMNON translated by
Edith Hamilton and adapted and directed
by Brother Jonathan Ringkamp, O.S.F.
Brother Jonathan, whose latest play,
Bella Figura. opened recently at the
Ensemble Studio Theatre to favorable
reviews, seeks to bring AGAMEMNON out
of the dark and ancient past into the living
and immediate present. His highly visual
interpretation of Aeschylus's text seeks to
reveal fresh insights into the already
discernible myths. According to Director
Brother Jonathan the myths may be predictable but the revelation s are not.
Brother Jonathan, a practicing
Franciscan brother, co-founded the Everyman Theatre with Geraldine Fitzgerald.
His first major play. The Dog Ran Away.
was produced at the Ensemble Studio
Theatre. Other works have been staged in

Greek Heritage Society
launches membership drive
Washington, D.C. - The Society for the
Preservation of the Greek Heritage is
launching a campaign this spring to increase
its national membership and step up
program act ivity, according to its executive
director, Frederick Haupt, III. "Ou r aim as
an organization," Haupt says, "is to
acquaint Americans with the urgent need for
private efforts in Greece to save that
country's cultural heritage and natural
beauty and to raise money to support these
efforts. To do this effectively, we have to
broaden our membership and offer o ur
members attractive opportunities to become
personally involved."
As examp les, Haupt cited a tourto Greece
that the Society has sc heduled for September of this year. It is already so ld out; but
SPGH intends to offer its members a
different trip to Greece each year, specia lly
planned and expertly guided. Members also
are invited to attend special events, such as
lectures by classical scholars, museum shows
and social occasions. The Society's newsletter is now published four times a year and
carries news about SPGH programs and
activities, such as the research which SPGH
funded at Ikar ion ncar Athens, believed to
be the birthplace of the theatre. "But, our
interest is not only in classical antiquity,"
Haupt says. "We a re just as conce rned abom
medieval churches, white-washed villages
and unpolluted Aegean harbors."
It is estimated that there are between two
and three million G reek-Ameri ca ns in the
United States. Most of them ha ve strong ties
to their cultural traditions. The Society is
reaching out to them with an appeal fortheir
support. It is also asking American firms
that do business in Greece to become
corporate members of SPGH. Beyond that,
there are thousands of Americans who have
traveled in Greece and know and love the
country. SPGH believes that they cannot be
indifferent to what is happeni ng to Greece's
enviro nment. "The cultura l legacy of
Greece," Haupt says. "belongs to everyone.
We all share the responsibility of preserving
it. ..

Greek Heritage is headquartered at 1730 K

purchases of French weapons and possible
coproduction of French aircraft here.
The accord, signed by Prime Minister
Andreas Papandreou and French Defense
Minister Charles Hernu is the first step
LOward the new Greek government's goal of
making Greece less dependent on the United
States for arms.
The signing of the agreement comes at a
time of intense behind-the-scenes competition among U.S., French and other West
European aerospace firms for the sale of
fighter aircraft to the Greek Air Force. The
Greek armed forces say they rely on the
United States for about 80 percent of their
weapons needs.
The agreement follows months of
contacts between the Greek and French
governments, launched promptly after the
Greek Socialists swept to power in last
October's election, seemingly on the same
political wave that had earlier carried the
Socialist Party to victory in France.
Hcrnu, who flew here from Paris for the
ceremony, said the agreement reflects "the
will of France to offer Greece an alternativc
against military dependence on any
superpower," a reference to the Papan-
dreou government's policy of diversifying
Greecc's arms sources away from the United
States in order to pursue a more neutralist
foreign policy.
The rhetoric, however, masks scrambling by France to beat other Western
competitors to a contract for fighter planes
to replace the Greek Air Force's aging F4C
Phantoms. The Air Force is believed to be
considering purchasing the French Mirage2000, the American FI6 and FI8, and the
West German-British-Italian Tornado.
Deputy Defense Minister George Petsos
is scheduled to visit the United States in late
May and the purchase of U.S. aircraft is
thought to be high on his agenda.
A deciding factor in the Greek government's final choice, sources here said, will be
the possibilities of coproduction. The idea
is to expand the operation of the Hellenic
Aerospace Industry, the showcase Greek
arms industry operating at Tanagra, north
of Athens, under a six-year contract with
Lockheed Aircraft International.
Hellenic Aerospace has the technology to
overhaul the o lder type of Mirage FIC
aircraft but is mainly geared toward the
maintenance of U.S.-made planes.
