17th Century Cretan epic love-poem
produced by Metropolitan Greek Chorale
Vintzenzos Kornaros' EROTOKR ITOS
will be presented by the Metropolitan Greek
Chora le, Inc. at Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln
Center, on Saturday evening, May 15th, at 8
p.m. This exciting production will unite
two highly reputable Hellenic organizations, the Metropolitan Greek Chorale and
the Greek Theatre of New York, and, with
George Tsontakis
it, an amalgamation of Greek and GreekAmerican artists, dancers, musicians. actors
and singers.
EROTOKRITOS. adapted from a manuscript which was secured on loan to the
Chorale, will introduce Kornaros' great
17th Century epic love-poem to the Greek
and American public. Best described as a
dramatic oratorio with spoken text, EROTOKRITOS will remain in its original
powerful Greek verse in order to portray the
uniqueness of its message as well as that
of the Cretans, whose grea t history is
reflected in its pages. An Engl iSh text will
accompany the verse.
The music, composed by George
Tsontakis, conductor ofthe Chorale, reels to
and from the simp le Cretan strains of the
folk-song EROTOKRITOS to ultra modern choral-orchestral explosion of color,
rythm and dynamics.
From its wealth of talent. The Greek Theatre of New York, under the Artistic Direction of Yannis Simonides, will provide the
actors, dancers. choreographers, and costume and lighting designers. Loukas Skipitaris has been commissioned by the Greek
Theatre to direct EROTOKRITOS.
The Metropolitan Greek Chorale is composed of volunteer si ngers from the tri-state
area. It has won critical acclaim having
presented original arrangements of Greek
and American contemporary music, as well
as works of well known classical composers,
in concert at Carnegie Hall, Town Hall,
Alice Tully Hall, and successfully completed a concert tour of Greece in 1977.
George Tsontak is. a Doctoral Candidate
at the Julliard School, is a Resident Fellow
at the MacDowell Colony in New
Hampshire this winter. He recently returned
26
from Italy where he studied Composition
at L • Academia Santa Cecilia and conducted with the Orchestra Teatro communale in Bologna under a lusk
Fellowship. He is also the recipient of the
Abraham EJlstein Scholarship in Compositi o n, which he has had the honor of
receiving for three consecutive years, and the
Charles Ives Scholarship given by the
American Academy. Tsontakis has been on
the faculty of the Aspen Music Festival
School for the Past seven years.

GREECE IN AMERICA
A crowd of almost WOO Ahepans with
many members of Congress attended the
25th AHEPA Biennial Congressional
Banquet on March 8 at the Washington
Hilton. The attendees witnessed Senator
Clair born Pell receive the 1982 Socratic
Award and heard Congressman Benjamin
S. Rosenthal discuss his recent visit with the
Prime Minister of Greece.
Banquet General Chairman John G.
Thevos greeted the Ahepans and their
honored guests and proceeded to introduce
Toastmaster Peter Cardiges, followed by
Daughters of Penelope Grand President
Sonja Stefanadis. Mrs. Stefanadis commented on the evolution of AHEPA and the
Daughters "from an organization that
helped the newly transplanted immigrants
discover and learn the ways of their new
homeland to an organization that is developing the future leaders of our country."
Archbishop Iakovos expr.essed his
concern with human rights: "Our concern

Senator Claiborne Pel/. le/t, received the AHEPA Socratic Award/rom Supreme President
Gustav Coffinas (right). In the center is Mrs. Pell.
in these specific problems stems, of course,
from the fact that the people involved arc
our blood brothers and sisters. But there is a
higher, more noble reason: i.e. our Greek
American community is committed
together with the whole Nation, to the cause
of justice. the defense of human rights and
peace in the world. Together with millions
of American citizens we are against military
aid and involvement in the rearming of our
so-called "allies" who are well k.nown for
their inhuman behaviour and who have
never attested to their alliance with allied
action."
Congressman Benjamin S. Rosenthal
described at length his recent visit to Greece.
Concerning Cyprus he said: ·What Mr. Papandreou wants to do is to raise the level of
consciousness of the nations that have a

responsibility in this area to finally do something about it. One of the things the United
States is least doing, very frankly," he said.
"In the '83 budget-I don' know if the
Ambassador wants to hear this bad
news-there is no aid to Cyprus so that they
voluntarily reduce the money. The money.
which was SIS million was not significant;
it was a sense of awareness and responsibility that the congress continued absent the
approval of the administration. And, what
Mr. Papandreou wants to do is raise the
level of consciousness so that there can be
a forum where for the first time such
countries as the United States, and the
United Kingdom, and Germany, which has a
very special relationship with Turk.ey, and
France, which has unique relationship with
Greece. can meet together with Turkey and

Greece to help resolve some of the difficulties that exist, at least on the Cyprus
question ....
Congressman Rosenthal remarked on
Papandreou's views on military aid: "In
terms of military aid and parity, because he
sees and the Greek general staff sees this
threat (Turkey), what they require is numerical parity in terms of financial accomodation, but more importantly they require
equality of weapon systems and the
conditions which they are given. Both are
very, very important."

not the affairs of state but a rather longlasting affair of the heart- the deep affection of the Greek immigrant for American institutions, particularly Congress.
T hese congressional banquets, first
organized in the early days of the AHEPA,
are a sincere expression of that affection.
Indeed, I believe that in developing the
AHEPA Congressional Banquet the
Americans of Hellenic heritage have forged
a new concept- that of honoring not only
the men and women who currently serve
in Congress- but of honoring the democratic institution itself.
We do not honor Congress because of the
passage of a particular piece of legislation,
nor for any special favor bestowed upon this
organization- we honor Congress simply
as an expression of our pride in its existence,
and for how that existence has improved the
lives of our immigrant forefathers and
mothers, and that of all Americans.
The millions of European immigrants
who entered through Ellis Island and first set
eyes upon the Statue of Liberty knew their
reason for coming to America: freedom.
These immigrants came from lands where
most aspects of their economic, social, and
political life were predetermined from birth.
And they came to America to live in a
country where every person had dignity, and
where discrimination and prejudice would
find no official sanction,
Whether they were Hellenes from the
Greek mainland, from parts of the Ottoman
Empire, from the Greek islands under italian occupation, or under British colonial
administration in Cyprus; the immigrant
Greeks had a special attraction to America,
Not only were they lured to the New World
by the chance to earn a decent living, to be
granted the respect of all people, and to live
where and how they wanted to: the Hellenes also recognized in America the revival

Americans of Hellenic heritage.
To achieve this end the AHEPA realized
that the immigrants must not only see what
they can take from America. but they must
contribute in kind. Even in this. the Greeks
were fortunate to have arrived here with a
very American notion- the notion that a
person's integrity and self·reliance is increased by helping others.
The Colonial and Western settlers of
America would have never survived if, in
times of crisis, they did not share their food,
knowledge, and resources with other
settlers. They came together to raise barns,
barter goods, and protect against the foils of
nature.
The Greek people, in order to protect their
ethnic identity under Ottoman rule. also
learned to work together. Their hospitality,
their enormous spirit of generosity and
kindness, made them ideally suited to make
lasting friendships with their American
neighbors.
The AHEPA. cognizant of the American
spirit, encouraged this cultural melting.
To show our participation in the common
good, we erected monuments in Somerville,
Massachusetts, and Chicago, llIinois, to that
great American hero of the First W<;>rld
War, George Dilboy. This young Greek
immigrant, who served with the U.S . Army
in World War I and was posthumously
awarded the Congressional Medal of
Honor.
At the moment of America's greatest
crisis. World War II. the AHEPA seized
upon a way for all its members to enter the
battle against fascism and become the only
private organization authorized by the U.S.
Treasury War Bond Drive to sell govern·
ment war bonds. By July of 1944. we had
sold bonds worth over $162 million dollars.
with several Ahepans each selling millions of
dollars worth of bonds.
Many Ahepans, indeed, also showed their
love of America during the war by making
the beaches of France and the jungles of
Bataan their final resting place in the never
ending battle for freedom.
Since the war the role of the AHEPA has
changed. Now confident of our Americanism, we strive to preserve our Hellenic
heritage. We do this not to enclose ourselves
into the ethnic ghettoes that we fought to
leave a generation ago, but because we
believe that the preservation of our Hellenic
roots is itself a great contribution to this
multi-racial and multi-ethnic culture called
America.
In the days ahead. we will remain
committed to the strong sense of citizenship
and public serve that our parents and grandparents taught us. We will remain verbal
when the times demand it. We will fight for
ju.tice when humanity is downtrodden.
We will speak the truth when myths are
perpetrated.

Cyprus, a few months ago. The old men were
remembering their homes in Turkish-occupied Cyprus, and wondering whether they
were ever again see the villages of their birth.
The women, dressed in black, wondered
about the fate of their husbands, still missing
after last being seen alive, over seven years
ago, in Turkey and Turkish-occupied
Cyprus. The young children wondered
whether they would ever have someplace
to live other than a refugee tent.
I flashed upon my homeland, America,
and was proud of the refugee assistance
we had provided- and must continue to
provide- while also being disapointed that
the United States has not done more to force
the withdrawal ofthe occuping troops of our
NATO ally, Turkey.
Whenever thinking about the people of
Cyprus. I remember the simple Objects of
our Order as stated in the AHEPA Constitution:
"To arouse mankind to the realization
that tyranny, wherever it may exercise its
baneful power, is a menace to the life,
property, prosperity, honor and integrity
of every nation; and that the preservation
of our liberties can be assured , only as this
country becomes the Champion of Libeny
and the Defender and Protector of all
oppressed and downtrodden peoples."
All the arguments that the AHEPA has
presented to the Congress of the United
States over the last several years, calling
for the withdrawal of Turkish troops, and
the right of the refugees to return to their
homes and land, is contained in these few
words decided upon by eight young Greek

This year, 1982, the AHEPA celebrates its
60th anniversary. We have become what our
immigrant forefathers and mothers wanted
us to be- an integral pan of the life of
America. We have prospered and panicipated for the c?mmon good, while preservmg our HellenIC roots.
America has been good to us, we have
tried to be model citizens in return. We ask
for little, and are willing to offer much. Our
love for America is 60 years old, and still
very, very young."
He also commented on American military
aid to Greece and Turkey, and the implications of President Reagan's new budget.
"Now, let me tell you what's happened: up
unti l now the relationship between Greece
and Turkey and military assistance was 7: 10.
Under the fiscal year 1983 budget, Turkey is
to receive $465 million, Greece is to receive
$280 million and the relationship is thus
changed from 7:10 to 6:10 against Greece,
something that the Congress will not sit still
for- that I can assure you. Not only has the
administration changed the numbers, they
35
are giving Turkey $300 million on concessional terms and no concessional terms
for Greece whatsoever. In other words, they
are turning the relationship virtually upside
down."
AHEPA Supreme President Gustav Coffinas presented the 1982 AHEPA Socratic
Award to Senator Claiborne Pell of Rhode
Island. Senator Pell thanked the Supreme
P resident and the AHEPA for the honor
and expressed his deep philhellene sentiments. "Now those of us who love Greece
always have certain ambitions for it - we
want to see Greece that's at peace and that's
prosperous, that doesn't have to worry
whether the troops are on the northern flank
or on the eastern flank, but where peace
remains. We want to see a Cyprus where
Turkish soldiers are no more, particularly
when we bear in mind that all the weapons
they carry are American weapons used in
defiance of American law, but with no
punishment to the Turks for doing it, not
even a tap on the wrist.

The Easter Celebration from
a Greek Orthodox Aspect
The bodily Resurrection of our Lord and
Saviour Jesus Christ, commonly known as
Easter, is the main and most important of all
holidays of the Greek Orthodox yearly
church calendar. At Eastertime the faithful
attend church to reverently venerate and
glorify the bodily Resurrection from the
dead of our glorious Redeemer Jesus Christ.
For the Greek Orthodox christians Christ
is the redeeming Savior because He died on
the cross at Golgotha to save mankind. His
faith and Resurrection is the guarantee and
promise of our faith and hope of eternal life
in the hereafter. Man had fallen from the
grace of God, our Maker, by transgressing
His direct charge to abstain from the forbidden fruit of the tree of life. The first
created, Adam and Eve, disobeyed the will
of God and as a result lost their immortality of the body. They were subjected to
the sting of death. Secondly. they were
expelled from the garden of Eden, paradise,
and were promised that in time a Messiah,
a Savior, would come to them to reconcile
them with their God.
Jesus fulfilled the promise. He came to
redeem man, to pay a ransom by dying on
the cross and according to Holy Scriptures,
Old and New Testaments, was buried and
on the third day came out of the grave.
Evidence and indisputable proof of His
actual resurrection were the numerous
manifestations to His disciples and women
at the grave on the morn of this great historical event and finally His bodily ascension
and return to the heavens which was in the
presence of His followers. Upon receiving
the blessings of the Holy Spirit, the third
Person of the Godhead, as was promised
to them by Jesus and took place on the
fiftieth day after the Resurrection, Pentecost, the disciples marched forward and
visited peoples near and around Jerusalem
at great risk and endangerment to their life.
They endured untold hardships and sufferings to proclaim and establish the religion
of the Risen Christ, the Savior of all
humankind.
This is the faith and strong conviction of
the Greek Orthodox christian. Faith in Jesus
is our assurance of salvation and eternal life.
There are many customs attached to the
celebration of this glorious christian holiday. First and foremost the communicants
prepare themselves in advance to receive
Holy Communion as was requested by the
Lord and has been recorded in the New
Testament. And, after the Divine Liturgy
of the Resurrection at which time the lenten
fast period is terminated and adhering to the
traditional custom of years back. the Greek
Orthodox christians celebrate the joyous
holiday with exuberance and partake of the

paschal feast. On the festive paschal table
are trays of red eggs, roast lamb, tripe soup
(mageritsa) and home baked sweet bread
and pastries. There is an abundance of
everything. People come and go at will
enjoying fully the feast. At the very center of
the table the paschal taper is placed to
signify the light which was brought into our
dark world by the Savior Jesus Christ, the
hope of world.
The eggs are red. That is the tradition.
The red egg symbolizes sacrifice; the bloody
sacrifice of Christ on the cross. There he died
to give us the real life. The egg in itself
denotes life and also the immortal life of
Jesus that was entombed and after three
days arose from the dead.
At Easter lamb is exclusively the traditional meal in keeping with the biblical
teaching that Christ would give Himself ' ver
for sacrifice similar in the manner the lambs
submit meekly to slaughter.
The home baked bread and pastries have
also a lesson for the faithful. The forms are
artistic and the texture is sweet. Christ gave
to us a good pattern and sweetened it with
wonderful teachings. The bread is designed
with a cross in the middle with red eggs at the
four ends of the eros. It is usually circular
which denotes the Oneness of the Godhead
(Father, Son and Holy Spirit) and the fact
that we are to remain steadfast in the faith
and one tradition.
The celebration lasts for forty days of
uninterupted feasting and merriment with
37
the friendly greetings "Christos Anesti"
(Christ is risen) and the reply "Alithos
Anesti" (truly He is risen).
The Resurrection of Christ does not occur

year. It varies due to the full spring moon
and the Jewish Passover which is
determined by the vernal equinox solely.
Easter is celebrated always on Sunday, the
first day of the week. Sunday replaced the
abservance of the judaic Sabbath day which
was for prayer and veneration of all mighty
God as prescribed in the Ten Commandments. Sunday in Greek, Kyriake, means the
Lord's Day at which time all christians
attend church to magnify and glorify God in
heaven.
The reason for the difference in the
celebration of Easter between the Western
Church (Roman Catholic and Protestant
Churches) is that they do not adhere to the
ancient practice which was established at
Nicaea, Asia Minor, where the First Ecumenical Synod (Universal Council) convened and decided unanimously by all 318
official representatives of the Christian
Church throughout the world and handed
the church edict to the various districts,
which in turn exhorted to christians to commemorate the Resurrection on the Sunday
following the vernal equinox (full spring
moon) not before March 21st and thelewish
Passover.
The Western Christians do not adhere to
the Synodical of 325 A.D. concerning the
Jewish Passover and, therefore, the variance
in the yearly commemoration. However,
the three Christian denominations do con'celebrate the historic event in the same
manner approximately every four years.
